How will parts of the map be unlockable?

Since Los Angeles isnt a city divided by alot of major waterways like New York, how are they gonna keep certain parts unlockable through game progress? Are they gonna block the freeways and just not let you drive all over the town?

There will also be Las Venturas and San Fierro. It will all be divided by water and at certain key moments in the story you will be able to travel from one city to another, eventually unlocking the whole map. Sound familiar?

I'm thinking this time around the entire map will be open from the start. In past GTA's the formula worked well as it gave you something to look forward to, after several hours of missions on the first island the game would give you a change of scenery to help keep it fresh. But, with the addition of multiplayer, specifically the free roam mode most people had already visited and explored the other islands in IV before they got to them in single player so it doesn't really matter anymore. At least, that's my thinking.

I thought they were only making Los Santos and surrounding woods/mountains or something. Maybe R* will try something different and give us the whole map at once. Like in SA, they gave us all of Los Santos at once.

Well who's to say they'll be blocked off at all? That's what I'm hoping.

Me too. I remember when I was waiting for RDR and I thought to myself that first, I'm going to unlock all side quests, outfits, collectibles etc, so I have a much wider choice in ways to complete missions if I get these done first, i was kinda thinking like the ambulance missions in VC and SA, or how Vigilante gives you extra armor. However, pretty much all side-quests and activities can only be progressed with as the main story is progressing.

On the other hand, it's kinda understandable, for moments like entering Mexico in RDR for the first time, or driving to San Fierro on the Mothership. In IV, entering new islands didn't have much of an impatc. If it's similar in V, like no actual plot element to make you feel immersed in new lands, than it'd be cool to have it unlocked day 1.

good point, there really is no point in having areas locked anymore, people will just go online and explore.

In my opinion, here's what we'll see.

First accessible city: Los Santos and Orange County. You can't access the San Fernando Valley, San Bernadino or San Diego because of highway renovation.

Second: The Valley and San Bernadino become accessible.

Third: San Diego is accessible.

Fourth: (If Tijuana is in the game) Tijuana and Mexico is opened up after decrease in major terrorism.

Vegetarian Piranha

earning the key to the city tounge.gif

if it features a Zoo, i guess a few big cats and some hungry fat people could be on the loose..

Who's to say maybe they won't arrange multiplayer in a way that islands are locked there too, until you get enough XP perhaps.

I'll probably guess that you'll start up as a marked man and if you venture into other parts of the city, people try to kill you.

Maybe it's time to get rid of this idea. Let's just face it: it's useless. I think a lot of people would just like to experience V's massive map.

In gta 3 that bridge blew up and you had to wait for it to get fixed (finishing a certian amount of missions). In vc there was a hurricane warning meaning that all the bridges are closed. In sa i have no idea why. In gta4 the bridges are closed because of terrirosts.

Who says it's only los santos, and in one piece only?

everyone lol

@GTA5PP on sa it was closed because tenpenny would have you killed if you went into watever area was blued out.

If there's more cities than just LS, then there's no reason to split up the city. However, I think it will be just Los Santos with surrounding countryside. I'm sure they'll block off parts of the map until you progress to a certain point in the story; it's basically a GTA tradition by now.

Eh, I can't say I feel the same way. I always felt rewarded whenever I unlocked a new location to explore. Having access to the whole thing from the start would take that away from me, in a way it'd actually cheapen my experience. Plus it was always fun trying to get an early peek at the yet unlocked areas by trying to find ways of sneaking into them, or seeing how far you can get before the police finally killed you. This is something I hope stays.

I can't really see that working out very well. How would that work if in a game multiple people are a high enough level to got to new areas but the rest aren't ? Or if a person who was high enough was driving a car to one of those areas but his passengers weren't high enough ?

WEll, since it's (rumored to be) only "Los Santos and the surrounding Countryside", perhaps we will finally have the entire map unlocked? monocle.gif

Storm drains could all be flooded with strong currents vis-a-vis bridge closures due to very heavy rainfall. Los Santos could be fragmented further from the larger SA area.

Three counties just like in san andreas.

Rockstar has never denied that the other cities don't exist. Just wait until the next trailer. It's just rockstar's way of keeping things secret and making people feel amazed by revealing unexpected info.

Yeah, they might take the rest of the map out if we are speculating too much!
