I read that too. Such a big loss especially since even in his golden years, he still entertained us as Keith.

Dear Ausfriends, i intend on getting myself over to Australia this year but i'm a bit confused as to how i do it. Basically i've taken a test for the work/holiday visa which lasts for a year, i passed the the test and i'm eligble to live and work in Aus but for everything to be sorted out i'd need around $5k which i don't currently have! I've been looking into other ways to get over but finding the correct info isn't exactly straightforwards, i did consider writing to companies to see if i could be sponsored to work/live there but i'm a bit unsure how to do it. Any ideas or advice for me? I'm 100% sure i won't be making anywhere in the UK my future home and i really want to start sorting out things properly, the sooner i get on a plane the better really.

You'd probably be sweet to work in a Backpackers for board for a few months. Have you considered taking out a loan at all man?

If you want to get out of the UK that bad, why not sell your things? I mean most things like cars, appliances and stuff you're unlikely to bring along with you to Australia when you move so might as well make some cash there.

Btw I don't think its easy to get companies to sponsor you unless you have some rare skills, a good degree, etc.

Personally I'd recommend going to Uni in the UK and getting a degree that will get you a job that's in demand in Australia, then try writing to companies that will sponsor you. You have a much higher chance of success this way.

True that. Also, I am sure companies only sponsor sportsmen, so unless you intend on being a sportsman, or an ambassador for a company, I doubt any company would sponsor you. Also, considering the fact that Britain apparently has good schools and apparently a good education, along with two of the world's best universities (Oxford and Cambridge), I see no problem in you obtaining a degree.

You'll have a very easy time getting in here if you're a doctor/surgeon, engineer (especially mining), or a police officer. I know in SA we're having huge troubles finding new recruits and we've had to actually poach bobbys a few times now.

A friend of mine has parents that are both smart cookies and on the payroll for BHP. They managed to get Australian citizenship even before the Soviet Union collapsed.

But we also have a sh*t ton of Japanese cars, we import them for mad cheaps and they don't need to be converted to left-hand drive so we also get a decent amount of second hand imports.

Last night I went to catch a cab and the guy wanted me to pay him upfront. I told him no and just to run the meter and he threatened to drive to the police station, I was always under the impression that it was illegal for cabs to make you pay before you get to the destination?

Its happened to me before. Mostly late at night. Too many people jump out without paying.

My dad's a taxi driver on the weekends (nights) and he says so many people do runners and he just lets them go because it's not worth it for like $30 because they could stab you and sh*t!

About the car thing; I have a Commodore and a Falcon in my garage right now blush.gif

If he's asking you to pay up front then he's probably had a runner or two already in the night.

In some countries, paying up front is better because then you avoid getting your ass reamed when they drive around in circles. I once told a cabbie in LA once that all his faffing about was coming out of his tip. Made it to the destination seconds later.

Yeh, generally when I catch a cab in Melbourne, paying upfront is usually required.

In terms of beer, VB is pretty sh*t, but I do love the icon and Australian image associated with it.

As a rule of thumb, Carlton Draught is the way to go off the tap, and imported beer if you're buying bottles.

We've got a few six packs in the fridge of the Coopers pale ale that Jay posted, which is actually quite good.

Here we go! A parliamentary inquiry may be undertaken over Aussies paying so much more for IT related products, particularly digital downloads which cost more here even though distributing them online to Australia does not put them out of pocket at all.

Edit: forgot the links haha.

That should show the big American companies we can't be ripped off so easily.

Bloody hell, about time. It's really sh*tty we're getting charged extra for digital downloads on Steam. I can't think of any real difference that would require us to pay more to download a game? The day we get Netflix is the day I can happily stop pirating.

The retail market here is pure sh*te, I was looking at work shirts on the Gap website, they're a US company and they're offering free shipping to Australia, yet I'm still getting buttf*cked when I walk into Myers or David Jones for the same sort of gear. It's sad US stores are adapting to our strong dollar yet our local retail is still trying to rip us off. Anyone here from WA and been to the Little Creatures brewery? I'm real keen to check that out. We went to the Little Creatures dining hall in Melbourne and I was in love with the place, we stopped for a few beers and didn't get a meal though.

holy sh*t methods are you from Perth? I always thought you were from the U.K! And I agree icon14.gif

Bloody digital downloads from Xbox Live or the PSN store are more expensive than the disc in a store. $99.95 for COD4?!!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Freo as a whole is an awesome place. For days everyone was like "get some fish and chips" and I was like "you guys think highly of your fish and chips". Then I went to Cicerello's and had my face blown off.

@international postage: I shop a lot from asos these days because they have free shipping. Didn't know the Gap was doing that as well. I wanted to get one of the hats they were using at the NFL draft, went on their site and a proud popup said that now they offer international shipping to Australia for 'as low as $23'.

f*ck ya face, I'm not paying 23 bucks for something that only costs 35.

@finn: Nah I'm in Queensland man.

@International shopping: Yeah I've bought some jeans and chinos from ASOS and they've been awesome. Urban Outfitters is decent when sh*t is on sale, makes up for the non-free postage. Ordered two work shirts from Banana Republic and they are the f*cking best shirts I've ever worn I reckon.Have you tried Karmaloop Finn? They sell some pretty cool streetwear.

I've actually got a few snapbacks I'm looking to sell (my head looks f*cking stupid in hats). If anyone is keen hit me up. I've got a LA Raiders, Oakland Athletics and Baltimore Ravens I want to get rid of for $40 inc. postage.

Not interested in the Snapbacks...i know this is obvious but ebay would be your best bet.

As for the websites.

- ASOS, Cool shirts and jumpers, not a fan of the tees on offer though.

- Urban Outfitters, very average, products aren't so great and the range is pretty limited.

-Banana Republic, this would be great if i was confident buying suits online, (The shirts are nice), buut i prefer to try clothes at that end on first.

-Karma loop, no way i could complain about range...went to graphic tees and found 101 pages worth of stuff.

Big range of cheap shoes too, i was disappointed that they for some reason don't sell nike.

Oh well, thanks heaps i will definitely be visiting ASOS and Karma loop a lot and maybe dip into banana republic.
