Not at all... commonwealth means sh*t when it comes down to it.

The Commonwealth of Nations is a political group, not really an economic or military one like ASEAN or ANZUS or the Eurozone. It's nothing but lip service about the promotion of democracy and human rights in the developing nations and free trade between the developed ones, very little overlapping.

As most of you probably know in this thread, yesterday was Australia Day, and thus a public holiday for the entire nation. Just interested to hear everyone's opinion on the 26th of January. It doesn't quite make sense that we would celebrate Australian Day in correlation with the day that the first fleet arrived on the shores of Australia a few centuries ago now. Isn't it far more understandable to celebrate Australia Day on the date where Australia become a federation? It doesn't quite make sense that we would celebrate an invasion and the atrocities committed against the Indigenous people at the hands of the European settlers.

Here's a slightly amusing clip showing our two 'leaders' cowering from protesters, yet across the world many leaders fear for their very lives every single day. It seems a bit exaggerated and almost comical, but also pretty funny.

Serious points aside, I do enjoy any excuse to throw some snags on the barbie and down a few frothies. Turned out to be a good day for an occasion that generally, to me, seems like just another day biggrin.gif

Aboriginals... what a nuisance. The only race I know of that can take a statement and turn it into an excuse for a near-on riot. Then they play the 'race card' when criticized upon.

We couldn't change Australian Day now. If the Indigenous people think stirring up a fuss will get a major public holiday changed, they'd start doing things like this more and more just to get their way.

Australia Day would've been more bearable if I wasn't working and if the house had air con like most other sane people but unfortunately... no.

That's a bit harsh mate. You need to remember that these people have an entirely different culture to that of the Anglo Australians. It isn't exactly 'easy' for them to integrate into a society that is entirely different to their simple lives before the invasion. It just seems almost ridiculous that we celebrate Australia Day on the date where the first fleet settled on foreign land, and essentially invaded the territory. They aren't the only race who play the 'race card.' We've seen a million and one different people critisise Australia as being racist, and although it is partly due to our very open sense of humour, it does exist. Although, it is quite exaggerated at times. Just look at some of the comments on that video...they aren't exactly welcoming. Until the week leading up to Australia day, I didn't even know what date Australia Day was. Whether that makes me a bad Australian, I don't know, but I fail to see how it can be a 'major public holiday' when there is almost nothing to celebrate on this very day, a few centuries ago. To be honest, I love Australia and all, but until that Union Jack is removed, I see little pride in our flag. Perhaps it is because I'm only a 2nd generation Australian, and not from an Anglo background, but I just don't see it.

I would see much more of a reason to be proud and celebrate on the day when Australia became a federation. That is what Australia Day should be. Not a day commemorating some boat that marked a brutal conflict between the Indigenous people and the European settlers.

I'm not Australian, but surely Australia day is supposed to celebrate all of Australia's history, the good and the bad. Why let it represent only the bad? Just because it's the date that British sovereignty was declared, doesn't mean that's all it stands for. It can be about national pride and celebrating the country, being proud of its achievements.

We don't have freedom of speech down here the same way the Seppos do.

That's one reason why the Westboro Baptist Church wasn't allowed in. They'd get bashed in the streets.

That's somewhat true but I still think Rudd does a better job than Gillard.

True with ol' Tony sandbagging Labor on every decision they make with no counter-plan. No matter how bad Kevin '07 got, I feel like I can trust him unlike Gillard with her 'No carbon tax' bullsh*t and 'f*ck you Andrew Wilkie' act.

Rudd is a complete dickhead and Gillard is just plain stupid. Both are looking out for their own interests above what is good for the Labor party. I used to be somewhat pro-labor, but this new generation of political leaders are just sh*t. Don't get me started on Abbott, he is just out of the question. He criticises the leadership vote and challenges the legitimacy of Julia Gillard's Prime Ministership...does he fail to recall that he only ousted Malcolm Turnbull by a single vote?! ...Now there was one liberal leader I didn't mind, he was far more sensible than the majority of his colleagues. Gillard made this clear to Abbott which was welcoming, and she put it well to state that "The leader of the Opposition is focussed on the Labor Party, I can assure you we're focussed on the nation's future."

Still, our political scene is full of idiots...it's time for some new faces to emerge or I'll be voting for someone like the Greens at the next election (and I'm serious).

ANyone else in the southern nsw act region? It has been raining for 3 weeks every single afternoon without fail at about 4, and raining all through the night.

It's ridiculous, flood warning every evening, i have never experienced such consistent rain here before, it reminds me of when i went to Fiji.

It is most odd, and looking at the national weather and where the clouds are coming from, it's not going to stop anytime soon.

God damn, just watched the news and happened to see that my route to work is quite compromised by water.

Bloody floods, I'm surprised Brisbane didn't go under water again considering how the weather was during the Christmas period. Out west has gone to sh*t and a few weeks ago I'm pretty sure Saint George was nearly cut off due the river overflowing.

It's ridiculous, i thought i would never be saying "Bloody floods" haha.

It's like "Damnit there's no rain my sheep are dying"

Then it goes to "Damnit there's too much rain and my sheep can't swim"

Yeah, electing possibly their most clueless broken record isn't a great idea for any party when it comes to the leadership.

I'm not Australian, but I have something horrible to admit. Ok here goes:

I find Julia Gillard attractive

Seriously she isn't that bad looking, she has a milfy quality about her. I mean as far as heads of states go she's pretty fine. I'd totally of loved to have been her body guard when she got surrounded by those protestors not long ago.

"It's ok Julia I'm just laying on top of you to protect you. Now don't mind that thing sticking into your thigh it's just my gun".

That's the thing, she isn't a Mum. Nor is she married.

How'd you like to greet that fat ass, crows feet and depressing voice with a smooch? You can take her....

She's Australian, so I already know he has an annoying voice tounge.gif I'm willing to look past that though for her body and stunning looks. Ok maybe that's a bit far, she's not exactly my dream girl here. I'm just saying she is quite hot, especially for a politician.

It's mainly her teeth and age that hold her back. Gillard is just all around ugly.

IMO, she rivals this even older former British PM.

Dear Ausfriends, i intend on getting myself over to Australia this year but i'm a bit confused as to how i do it. Basically i've taken a test for the work/holiday visa which lasts for a year, i passed the the test and i'm eligble to live and work in Aus but for everything to be sorted out i'd need around $5k which i don't currently have! I've been looking into other ways to get over but finding the correct info isn't exactly straightforwards, i did consider writing to companies to see if i could be sponsored to work/live there but i'm a bit unsure how to do it. Any ideas or advice for me? I'm 100% sure i won't be making anywhere in the UK my future home and i really want to start sorting out things properly, the sooner i get on a plane the better really.
