How will Los Santos be staggered?

Hi,

I'm not trying to get into the number of cities debate here but I was wondering:

How will LS be broken up at the start of the game with more becoming accessible as the game goes on?

With GTAs III, VC, SA & IV this was quite straight forward because there were islands or, in the case of SA, great big freeways that led to other cities blocked off.

Now my understanding of Los Angeles geogaphy (which, let's be honest, is limited) is that it is pretty much all on the same piece of land, if you will.

How, then, do you propose that Rockstar will keep us boxed in to certain areas at the start of the game?

This would obviously be a doddle if there was another city to travel to but, working on the basis that it is possibly just LS, how can they realistically keep the us in a certain place.

Hope this makes sense!

GTAJoe

Snake Without a Tongue

I have no idea. That's a good question. I personally always thought Lindsey-Lohan-esque house arrest would be a good way to unlock areas.

Well for the location at the end of the interstate, there could be a roadblock or heavy wanted level. But if it's all linked, then I can't see why we wouldn't be allowed to go there from the start.

Millionsofdeadcops

there was an event called "Carmageddon" here a few weeks ago, where the 405, one of the most important freeways in LA was closed so they could demolish a bridge that ran over it. people in LA were basically told everyday by the news and radio to stay home if possible because they thought traffic was going to be so bad (they listened, so traffic was actually pretty light).

if Rockstar really wanted to close off Los Santos, they could parody "Carmageddon" by closing some of the freeways and creating huge traffic jams that completely clogged the side streets and alternate freeways such that you would be stuck in the city (treating the cars like solid objects instead of jackable/drivable cars). maybe car accidents would block off the sidewalks so you couldn't even walk past the traffic jams.

I was going to reference to that, it is actually quite a good idea, i like the city being staggered, so there is always more to discover as you progress through the game.

Los Angeles limited? You must have never been to LA.

Thats just the greater LA area, it's huge.

I think you focused on the wrong part.

Now my understanding of Los Angeles geogaphy (which, let's be honest, is limited)

He's saying he doesn't know much about LA geography and is asking how you'd break the map up and keep it from all being accessible right away. Past GTA's have disabled bridges or blocked roads. He wants to know what they'd use this time around.

Personally I think they might start with it all open. Trailer 2 should help by showing what all they have outside of the city.

EDIT: If you were like me in SA I didn't wander too far outside of what they showed me anyway. Only after I'd been to Rodeo did I start exploring the space in between. Same with RDR. Ya you have access to pretty much all of Cholla Springs but you don't necessarily have a need to go out there. Like I could've gone to Rathskeller Fork at the beginning, but I didn't. The story guides your exploration.

Well it's "reimagined." It isnt gonna be a 100% strict. Each section of the city may be divided into islands or connected by highways which go through the countryside.

This would've had to have happened a while ago as well, because if it happened only a few weeks ago, would it already be built into the game?!

They'll probably figure out a way to do it, like in RDR. There was no islands in RDR, just parts of the greater map cut off through various reasons. I feel this is what R* will do with GTAV.

Pretty cool map dude, puts things into perspective, I wonder if Los Santos will be close to that map.

By the looks of it yeah damn close. Hopefully our heads won't explode by the insane detail.

They could leave the map open, but make us unlock things. For example, after a certain mission, all the nightclubs are unlocked in a particular area. Something along those lines.

Why don't you show me around the city?

f*cking terrorists!

What?

Terrorists. There's been a big scare and you can't go across the bridges so good.

I dono... maybe theyll just have it all open to us from the beginning in this one.. I think they may just break a few of these "patterns" that everyone seems to have them pegged on.

I think there is going to be a huge earthquake and certain very tall skyscrapers are going to fall in a certain way so they end up blocking off certain parts of the city.....................................

HAHA jk, Your guess is as good as mine tounge2.gif

Some good points here.

@TheGreene2010 - as was pointed out, I was saying my understanding of LA geography is limited or close to non existent.

As your map shows though, LA is an enormous city with a lot of smaller stuff going on outside/beyond the hills.

What does anybody think to the idea that maybe you start outside of Los Santos and you then make your way into Los Santos? That may be easier to police, so to speak.

Also, people who know Los Angeles - would you mind annotating the map that TheGreene2010 provided - http://www.wall-maps.com/Unique_Media/LosA...ater_over09.jpg

Just highlighing what part of the city is what, where certain landmarks fall and what the other smaller settlesments are?

I would really appreciate this, as I'm sure others would.

They can break it off maybe cutting the map up in two, and at a certain point where you reach the half-mark before you've unlocked the other half, the camera will zoom into a roadblock up ahead and cops yelling "DO NOT CROSS! THIS AREA IS OFF LIMITS!" As you get closer, you'll hear things like "DO NOT GET ANY CLOSER! YOU WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT!" (At night, you'll see lights being flashed around and hear a different message from the second one, like "WE KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE! STEP BACK!")
