GTA had 2 types of Protagonist:

It is interesting to think about that looking back from GTA 3 there were 2 types of main character. Those that lived the life of a soldier and those wanted to rise to power and create a large criminal organization. And for those 2 types of character there were 2 main themes: Organized crime and the other evolved around gangs.

 

Gta 3: Claude was a soldier, it was about Organized crime

Vice City: Tommy was man who rose to power, it evolved around organized crime

SA: CJ was a man who rose to power, it evolved mostly around gangs

LCS: Toni was a soldier, the game was about organized crime

VCS: Vance rose to power, the game was about organized crime

GTA 4: Niko was a soldier, The game was mostly about organized crime

TLAD: Johny was a soldier, the game was mostly about gangs

TBOGT: Luis a soldier, game was mostly about organized crime

 

Looking at the trailer of GTA 5 and the rumours I think they will take a different road.

My first theory is that For one thing I think the protagonist will not be soldier nor will he build a criminal enterprise nor will he represent any gangs or groups of organized crime. To me it seems it will be about high profile robberies, scams, real estate, black mailing, etc.

 

Second theory could be that the main character will actually be a cop, but if that is the case I do think there will be mutiple protaganist. If there are mutiple protagansts (5) I think we will see the following:

1. A high profile robber

2. A Cop with questionable morals

3. A gangbanger (soldier, gang theme)

4. A Mafioso (rising to power, organized crime theme))

5. A real estate guy with deep underworld connections.

 

So perhaps in this GTA we will finally have "new main Character" something they have not done before. If they will do multiple main characters we will hopefully see both new themed main characters and old themed.

If we start with only one main character then I guess the next episode of GTA 5 is almost garuanteed a gang themed episode (it's LA after all).

Yeah kind of like the Shield, could be interesting. But that would only work if A. there are mutiple characters to play or B. the cop is a downloadable episode that comes after the orginal game. It seems that being a cop would bring very interesting aspects but also some limitations.
