Anyway, was reading about this on the BBC News site not so long ago, and it sounds horrible to say the least. In a not-so-horrible way, I'm hoping that the 7 deaths were from impact, and not from burning to death inside their car. They say it's the biggest Motorway collision ever remembered. ska
ouch. Final destination 2 all over again. I witnessed someone get hit on the highway a few months back, his head exploded like a water balloon. Right. Can you do us all a huge favor and refrain from posting here ever again? This is a very serious and tragic event, and you have no room to come in here and make comments like that. On that note, I heard about this earlier on CNN. Needless to say this is a very horrific accident and it's a shame that so many lives were lost. They're saying it's because of poor weather, which I can definitely see playing a large factor in an incident such as this one. Hopefully we will hear something from the Somerset police soon in regards to what actually happened here.

RIP Yeah it was about 830 last night, reports of multiple bonfires in the area surrounding the motorway. With one witness, saying that the Iceland truck disappeared into black fog. ccrogers15
something like that happened here in michigan USA in ann arbor though. there were if im correct, 40 deaths? I guess the only survivor of it was a dog and its owner who, by some chance, survived due to the dog. The dog pulled the old lady from the burning car and got hailed a hero. Dont remember when it happened. Last year maybe?

Yeah, but as of now, we aren't sure who the victims of the pile-up are, and taking a look at the damage from overhead, I'd say the majority, if not all, of the deaths so far are from cars. Horrible to hear that there could still be bodies in the wreckage, since some of the cars are that burnt out that they have 'burnt to the ground'. And yeah, by the sounds of things, it was just really thick fog that caused the accident, and that there were no fireworks/fires near the motorway at the time. Zyo
The fireworks display mentioned was attributed to what? For those not from the UK, November 5th is Bonfire night in Britain. Its a big party night with lots of fireworks and open fires in fields and whatnot... It basically goes back to a fellow named Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the houses of parliment. This is a terrible tragedy on a night that is traditionally a day of celebration. Very sad. Also to the person that said it's the biggest motorway crash in memory, I remember a bigger one in 1991, when there was a 51 car pileup on the M4. There was pileups on both sides of the motorway that time as well.

It happens on the 4th as well, people get anxious to light their "works", in the USA here. How would there be "black fog"? Is there a tie in to the crazy World weather patterns we seem to be in? On a side note, those white somewhat Kabuki face masks that Anonymous wear (if I recall) wasn't that in relation to Guy Fawkes? Sorry for getting a bit OT on this, but I'm sure more details will surface. I heard that the highway would be closed all weekend at least.

Burning to death in a MVA is wuite quick. The intensity from the fire (petrol or diesal) is enough to literally suck the air from your body. I feel more for the victims who would have had "roadsides" amputations preformed by doctors in order to free them.
Menaced
What an awful, terrible tragedy. My uncle was involved in a pretty big motorway pile-up once. He said an articulated lorry almost took him right out but swerved out of the way right at the last second. He was pretty badly shaken up by it all and wouldn't get in a car for months. My condolences go out to the friends and families of those involved. Edited November 9, 2011 by Menaced
sivispacem
Burning to death in a MVA is wuite quick. The intensity from the fire (petrol or diesal) is enough to literally suck the air from your body. Diesel is quite stable in terms of its volatility. It's actually pretty hard to ignite diesel with an open flame. And the therobaric effects of large quantities of burning fuel only tend to happen in enclosed spaces like buildings rather than open spaces. On that basis, I'd disagree with your statement that burning to death in a vehicle accident is a quick death. Being knocked unconscious or comatose by the impact and then burning to death? That's quick. But I imagine that many of those killed would have actually died from smoke inhalation or the inhalation of the toxic compounds from acrid smoke (hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, cyanide) long before the actual fire killed them. KilnerLUFC
Well, from today's news, it seems that it was the local fireworks display that contributed to this pile-up. The police are investigating the local rugby club, saying that it was the smoke, and not fog, that caused the pile-up. 3 of the dead were truck drivers, with the rest been in cars. johnny_zoo
This accident is especially surreal for me because my family and I were coming back from a holiday down South and we drove back at night along that same road. It was a safe journey thankfully.
