Gustra
I have just started playing GTA IV and I can't find any info on whether the mission order is important, and if certain missions are main missions and some side missions? It was possible (IIRC) in earlier games to miss out on side-missions if the main mission took off somewhere else, but I may be wrong about that. If it's possible to miss a mission, how do I know which are main missions and which are side missions?
NCONiall
Hello and welcome to the forums! IIRC the only missions that show up on your map that you don't have to do to finish the main storyline are the Assassin missions, which you get from the telephone in Alderney. As for mission order; I don't think it really matters. I've always did them in the order they came on the map; I'm a bit of an OCD freak.
Oddsock
Hey Gustra, Missions are only given in order. Although some missions are available at the same time, it is because they are unrelated or don't pertain to the main storyline. It's impossible to skip ahead in the storyline, don't worry. Gustra
Perhaps I was a little bit unclear : I don't want to miss out on any missions at all, so it would be unfortunate if I happened to do a main mission which makes me miss any side missions. I'm not worried about missing any main missions . Ok, so assassination missions should be done as they come to not miss any, then. Thanks!
GTAV2011
All side-missions stay on the map until you finish them. Doesn't matter what order.
Whino
On a similar, related point. What happens if I can't do "No 1" for Brucie? Assuming I get fed up of trying it, will it afferct the main storyline? (Apart from not getting 100%)
Kevin Johnson
Without passing this mission, you can't get Brucie as a friend. So you miss out on hilarious dialog, Brucie's friend-gift of picking you up in his chopper and fly you round town, you'll never drive his cool unique golden Huntley SUV, you can't get the street races side missions. So you'd miss at least three archivements/trophies and a lot of fun. So my advice would be: Keep the Comet by failing the mission intentionally and get a feeling for the Comet. Keep on playing the game some more. When your driving skills are better, try it again, it really isn't THAT hard. Edit: I'm not sure, but it could be that this mission is also required for the "Stevie's 30 Car Thefts" side-missions. Captain_Obvis456
Actually one of the only missions you don't have to do is the No 1 mission in order to progress. You can skip that mission and do it after the game if you want. You can also skip the one before it where you kill the gay guy in the diner. Can't remember the name of it. I'm pretty certain that if you fail the mission Niko leaves the car, and Brucie drives off. A better way would be to use cheats to spawn a Comet, and get a feel for its handling. In reality, though, you should only need to work on controlling the Comet's traction with the ground, as it tends to jump at the slightest bump. radioman
All missions and side missions are required for 100% completion...So, you can't skip any missions, really... But, GTA III is the ONLY game where it was possible to "seal" missions and thus lock yourself out of 100%.-On consoles, that would have meant you were S.O.L. if that happened, but there was a fix(thanks to Demarest) for the PC version...This glitch was fixed on Vice City onwards....Just a heads up. Karjerker
I've never felt that the order of the missions is important, but there is a 'logical order' for them to be played in. For example, when missions become available they are marked on the maps with alphanumeric characters relative to the names or identities of the characters you have to interact with. Alternatively, you can interactive with specific persons, which are represented by human being shaped icons. Other specialist icons may exist, either way, going to them will trigger a mission. In my case, once the game gets into full flow I try to complete a given series of missions with one character at a time before moving onto other choices. The way the story is written, it allows for this and does not cause any issues with the way the story plays out. For example, I played out all of the stories with Roman, Elizabeta, etc and ignored the ones for Playboy X and Dwayne until I was ready to do them, at which point other characters were introducted, such as Packie - but I simply choose to finish the ones with Playbox X and once that series had played out, then did the ones with Packie and his immediate family. So I do not think you have much to worry about. I've played GTA-IV, The Lost and Damned and The Ballard of Gay Tony out several times now to their conclusions and have never once noticed any issues with the characters being out of phase with the storyline. Karjerker
... I used to know a guy, years ago now, who in all seriousness said to me that because he had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) he intended to read 'everything' on the Internet IN ORDER. I guess in the bad-old-days, people like him used to sit in caves and count all of the pebbles as they went slowly insane. But in all seriousness, OCD like many other disorders is a condition that can be a living hell. I, for example, have a touch of Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD) due to a former career (before I became a beta tester and reviewer of games and applications), and as such this makes my life infinitely more interesting from time to time, but you know what? GTA-IV and games very much like it work to allow me to deal with said issues as and when they arise. You will find this is very true of veterans and the like who consider them therapy. Jasper Petrol
The order of the missions doesn't matter with regard to completing the game. If you play Phil Bell's mission Truck Hustle before completing Gerry McReary's missions the story doesn't quite fit together. Phil Bell refers to the trouble that Niko and the McRearys have stirred up between the Albanians and the Ancelottis. in this situation, this is spoken of before you have started the rift.
