cant remember
In most GTA games, driving through gang areas meant them taking out their uzi's and shooting at you. I didn't like that behavior because it made gang areas pretty much no-go zones for peaceful exploring. In GTA4 then they went the other extreme, no gangs ever attack you (unless you attack them first) I think In GTA5 it would be nice if the gangs were still somewhat hostile but not with weapons. Eg. they hang around in groups and if you drive past they do nothing but if you walk too close they will walk towards you (and run at you if you get in a car) and start punching you. Kind of like the Ballas at the very beginning of SA.
Matty
I think that whether gangs straight out show violence towards you or not should depend on the location of where the gang is located. For example, in a ghetto area; I would expect hoods to come running up to and threaten me or shoot at me in Grand Theft Auto V much like rival gangs did in GTA: San Andreas, and it would be realistic in that context. Other gangs that may be present, including mafia-based mobs, should be discrete. I liked that in Grand Theft Auto IV how gang members blended in with the general crowd on the streets and made for a realistic atmosphere. You wouldn't expect to see a bunch of mafia gang members standing around in several small groups with their weapons drawn.
Turin88
It made perfect sense for Ballas to shoot at you on sight in SA. But yeah, I agree... most gangs should generally be hostile, but in a non-lethal way at first. I'd like it to be a bit more random as well. Like, if you drive through the same rough neighbourhood 10 times, 9 times out 10 the gangs will ignore you, but on one of the drive throughs they try and stop your car, point a gun at your window, and try and rob you. Tashan
So basically gangs need to be like Vice city, they never mess up with you unless your dirty face is shown up. Even in general how would any one react? ..run or call for ambushes or strike first and talk later or the other way round. A lot also depends on how the cops react to the street fighting and how the game allows the fight to happen in the first place.
FlavouredMilk
All this reminds me of is in GTA IV. There's a building called 'Seedy's Auto Shop' And a roller door ajar a few inches and a burnt out van behind it. I laughed. The word seedy amuses me so. RedDragonsBOOM
I think they should be really sketchy at night almost have the feeling of slight fear walking around alone unarmed when you see a group of thugs and you catch their attention approach you and book you, but in reality you dont really see many guns with gangs is mostly 5 on 1 beat down fests or knives or just some bullsh*t talk. But I really want to see a drastic difference between day and night vibes in certain seedy locations. drugs, junkies, thugs, pimps, hookers, muggers, maybe a gang rape in a rare circumstance if you wanna get super realistic. catching people f*cking in cars maybe you walk down an alley and some girls giving head they spot you and embarrassingly the guy runs away pulling his pants up and the girl screams and runs lol. sh*ts hardcore in certain areas man and it doesn't necessarily require a gun for some of the most intense real life situations that happen when the sun goes down. R* had promised a drastic change between night and day in certain areas of LC on IV and I looked desperately still do to this day for thugs beatin down on somebody randomly and never see anything close to that, never get booked, nothing just hookers. same as every other gta game. Algonquin Assassin
I know most didn't like how it was done in GTA IV, but it made perfect sense. Why would a gang attack you on the spot for no apparent reason? They do attack you in GTA IV unprovoked though. It's happened to me a few times in Little Italy, but they just start throwing punches after a minute, or so of sh*t talking. So while I would like the surrounding gangs to be more aggressive to the character I don't want them always opening fire. It should be like in GTA IV where they intimidate you, but not just open fire straight away. This was annoying in the GTA III era games and it was dumb that these gang members had incredible vision they could detect who we were and open fire in a speeding vehicle. I would also like other peds to be attacked aswell. Like when people say we shouldn't be the only criminals, in reverse we shouldn't be the only victims either. I want to see peds gets bashed up in back alleys, basketball courts etc and have the opportuinity to save my fellow man. Typhus
Here's some things I want to see on the wrong side of the tracks - - Grubby little porn shops, full of neon and shady little men like this walking in-and-out of it: - In apartment blocks, a husband and wife having arguements on the street. The wife starts throwing cutlery out the window as he tries to explain why her sister had her mouth caught on his penis. - Dogs left in cars, barking wildly. Smash the window to let them out and they'll wag their tail and run away happy. - Gang lookouts. So, you might see a kid on a bicycle following you, only to ride off to alert a bigger gang. - A nerdy, white man who offers to take you back to his apartment for a drink. Going there reveals a man tied to the bed and blood everywhere. You can either kill the sicko or run for your life.

Lol that sounds way too f*ckedup haha I liked how it was GTA:IV, but yeah.. it should be more realistic in the way that they shouldnt be carrying pistols and shotguns straight up. I liked how you would exchange arguments at first then sh*t broke out and then you would have an altercation. There should be more gang members that kind of arrive later and try to chase you down n what not. But yeah, im suspecting GTA:V to be alot more grimey and scary during the nights. Like have shady characters hanging on the corners of streets offering drugs/sex or threaten you if you dont move on out of here. Have less cars on the street making the streets a lot more desolate and spooky, have the occasional gang bangers in cars roaming the street with their latin gang music or hip hop blaring so its reasonably aubile as they pass by or whatever. teawithmilk
I like some of these ideas but ultimately I would like to see a similar system to RDR where there are a number of different events around the city, perhaps themed by how good/bad an area is. You could then choose to intervene on either side for a reward or just take all of the benefits. I imagine random muggings, robberies, sexual assaults, fights, etc that you can weigh in on. Remember criminals are often defenders against crime in their own hoods as well as perpetrators.

iGrandTheftAuto
I hope gangs return, but instead of them always shooting at you, they leave you alone or just stay in a group and shout things to you if they suspect you of being in a gang that is against their gang. D- Ice
In most GTA games, driving through gang areas meant them taking out their uzi's and shooting at you. Kind of like the Ballas at the very beginning of SA. You bring up an excellent point here - I was actually thinking the exact same thing when thinking about my perfect GTA for my concept thread a while back. I completely agree that in past GTAs it might have been a bit too much to have gangsters strolling around with AK's in the middle of the day in the Central Business Districts, and firing at you as soon as you go into their territory, even if your inside a car driving at speed with no way of them logically knowing it was you inside. However, the overly sheepish behavious of gangsters in GTA IV, while aimed at being more realistic in them not whipping out their guns and firing at you infront of everyone in broad daylight, was perhaps too taim for gameplay standards in order to make the game fun, perhaps even too much so even for realistic standards. A gang who absolutely despise your guts likely wont do absolutely nothing if you enter their gang territory - especially in the more seedy areas of the city and during night-time. You are very correct that somesort of balance is needed between the two extremes. I really can't see myself enjoying GTA V if free-roam - one of the most important aspects for me - is completely boring and devoid of any challange as in GTA IV. Maybe they should not shoot at you straightaway, but if they recognise you, they'll start following you and giving you warnings - something already programmed into IV's engine - but if you push over pedestrians or gangsters too much. After a while of giving you warnings, they'll start nudging you/pushing you and maybe attacking you with their hands or melee weapons. If you beat a couple of them up, or pull out a gun, then they'll take it up to the next level and start shooting at you. However, this ideally should only be the case with street gangs who hang around on the streets. They should only have small, cheap and easy to obtain weapons like basic pistols, uzis and maybe basic shotguns. With more organised gangs, they should only guard their rackets and businesses, only attacking you if you enter unwelcomed or cause trouble. @ Typhus: That's exactly what I have always been wishing for. It is sucha shame that in their pursuit of complete realism across the board, R* have taken away the extreme dystopian element in their city designs, which I feel is in fact an integral part of any GTA. I really loved the seedy Marty Chonks missions in GTA 3 where he lured enemies nto his factory and turns them to dog food, or all the El Burro telephone missions at the beginning of that game. I would love for R* to bring that extremely seedy, grimey and sick dystopian feel and atmosphere back to their game designs.
