The plane thing...

Hey guys,

Just wanted to get your takes on the situation with planes in the game.

It seems pretty likely that planes are once again going to be flyable but this raises the question of how this will work if it is only Los Santos and countryside.

Rockstar weren't keen on planes in GTA IV because it didn't make sense to be flying around one city.

It would appear we have one city again and a lot of countryside etc so I just want to hear your views on how this may work.

I am not trying to make a case for more than one city or anything like that, just seems a bit odd.

Perhaps there is an airport out in the countryside somewhere but what would be the point?

I guess it would be convenient if you had to flee the city in a hurry?

There's more than one airport in LA, is there not?

Maybe LS will be so big that it warrants flying from one end to another.

I can't imagine them making the game so that it's only in LS, if I'm being honest. I think they'll have the whole of SA; therefore it will make perfect logical sense to include planes in the game.

I'm not convinced that there wont be more cities with V.

I think that we are ALL looking inside the box on this...

what we need to do is start looking outside the box and imaging the possibility that this

is not SA but another State entirely. No more SF or LV but there are more cities than that

Also lets not rule out the possibility that we might be able to fly to vice city or some other

island or something. I would like to think that R* is incredibly imaginative

They read this forum and they might be saying to themselves " Man, these guys are stuck on SA. We

are about to give them something that will COMPLETELY make them forget that SA ever happened."

You'd think V will have a pretty sizable map if they're putting in jets that can go that fast. Would be a shame to include jets if there were no real use for them.

Planes were in III and VC, both were small maps with 1 city. There is no certain requirements that the game must meet in order to add planes; Rockstar simply adds them or they don't, and this time they did.

Yes but in III and VC they were small planes, not fighter jets and private ones. SA was the only GTA game to include flyable shamals and at-400's.

R* is saying this map will be the largest yet. so if that's the case i don't think there would be a plane dilemma. remember we've only seen one trailer and have more speculation than proven facts. i have a feeling GTAV's map will be enormous.

Besides watercraft, We're most interesting in flying devices other then Helicopters, So, that Jet looks mighty nice, don't it??

You'd be wrong basically, assuming to make a statement like that. Sam Houser has publicly spoken about the reasoning, what is more curious to long time fans is the impact of the events of 9-11-2001

I thought that IV didn't have planes because of 9/11.

But also liberty city was based in the city, there was nowhere apart from the airport where you could land a plane, and no where else apart from the airport that you could get a plane so you would be going in circles basically. I think it was more to do with the type of setting and the environment rather than the space.

But by assuming this, LS or the surrounding areas/cities must have a suitable landing zone such as an airport and/or an airfield similar to the one in SA that you purchase west of LV.

I'm sure they're in I do get the argument that it's one City and Countryside, but they showed a fighter jet in the trailer, I doubt they'd have a fighter and not have it be playable. notify.gif

Not only that there could be more than one airport within LS, maybe a big International one, and then a Regional one, not to mention some air strips in the Country side.

Not only that Rockstar North has been saying that this is going to be there biggest map yet, there's been rumors floating around that it's going to be 2.5 times bigger than RDR, so planes are a big possiblity. (Though the rumor is un confirmed as of yet.)

I think there will be airstrips in the countryside, or at least places where you can land. If they're going to have a big plot of land where there's migrant workers, and a crop duster, they've got to have a place for it to land in a field or something? I doubt they'd make you take off from LAX (whatever it's called in GTA), in a crop duster.

Which part? If you mean the vice city part then i agree, but if your talking about the Part where he says there will be other cities, then i would have to strongly disagree with you.

Last time I played San Andreas, the jet was unlocked in a air field out in the desert... So I dont think countryside air strips are so far fetched. The trailer shows a fighter jet, and a commercial airliner at the end (I took the airliner at the end as a hint to next trailer/next city).

Where would a commercial jet go? just make a circle around this supposedly HUGE city (even tho the skyline looks as small as LS in the first SA). Does the plane just fly out into nothingness, just to mysteriously fly back? I certainly expect to see small towns (like before in SA) dotting the surrounding wilderness, but I dont expect these towns to have full airports.

This is a good question you have asked.. Why have a commercial airliner flying at the end of the trailer?

EDIT

Double checked and it looks like its not an airliner like a 747, but still.. look at the downtown skyline at the end... that cannot be the only downtown.. like 6 sky scrapers? that is the biggest, most ambitious rockstar has gotten? must be a ton of wilderness...... I think we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg

Hey guys first post here after lurking for a long time...

So they said this game is taking place in their version of Southern California. I wouldn't be surprised to see a version of San Diego in there and right by there is Camp Pendleton a major military base...

Just a possible scenario I was thinking about.

They just didn't reuse SF & LV. Doesn't mean their won't be neighboring cities with an airport. I just think Santos will be the biggest city.

OR MAYBE, Rockstar just needed an excuse to save planes for the next game so they would have an extra bullet point on the back of the box and treat planes as a "new feature".

Seriously, with only 1 city, theres no reason for there to be planes in this game. No matter how big or ambitious they claim this project to be, planes are still TOTALLY USELESS without a place to fly them to. Why take off in a plane and fly around, only to land back where you started. Its totally irrelevant. Its just an excuse to claim that they have a new feature. There was no reason to make GTA IV bare bones like they did. There was no reason why IV shouldnt have had planes either. But the fact of the matter is, Rockstars gonna re-release all their old features one at a time, and make you pay for each of them with DLCs, and claim they're new features. We're gonna pay for the same content we had back in 2004 all over again. Its the same thing with VC and 3. Bikes and Boats were introduced in VC. Features that would have worked perfectly in 3, because it was the SAME ENGINE. Yet back then, Rockstar claimed the same thing. "Oh, the engine couldnt handle it", and yet the next game, built off the same engine, had all that. This is pathetic.

There's plenty of reasons why to have planes in GTAV that aren't just for messing around. For one, with how big the countryside might be, there could be plenty of smuggling missions where you have to fly into the forest to pickup/drop off various drugs/weapons or whatever it might be, and take them to the city or something? In GTAIV, planes would have been a worthless addition, seeing how big the map was and how it was. There wasn't anything in Liberty City, that called really for the need of flying a plane from Hove Beach to the Statue of Liberty or wherever.

This post is exactly what I was going to say planes have loads of uses with the country side, even if it's one Major City.

Smuggling missions would be awesome, or imagine going to some commune farm with a small plane loaded with some hard to get guns and ammo, and it's your job to break in, steal it and get to the City. The possibilities are endless, after all this is Rockstar.

I am interested on seeing how they explain the Protag being able to pilot planes, I mean they had flight school in GTASA and in IV/TBoGT they explained why Niko/Luis respectively could fly Helicopters.

Yes but they weren't flyable by the player.

Just from looking at the LA region on Google Maps, it seems to me that there's quite a few airports around that area. Anyway, I imagine that this is going to be a massive map, so plenty of room for planes.

Breaking Bohan

I sincerely hope that the map is big enough to fly planes (and not just in a circle either). It would be ok to have small landing strips out in the country, but it would be even better to have big air ports and military bases in other cities that one could fly to.

Not to be a d*ck or anything but a lot of people were complaining that we were not able to fly planes in IV but now that there is SOME kind of hint that we will have the option to fly planes again in V, people are b*tching about it?....comee onnn. R* is already saying this is going to be the biggest map yet, doesn't that mean BIGGER than San Andreas......If I am rite, than OBVIOUSLY planes would be convenient, SA was huge.....calm down campfires smile.gif
