Algonquin Assassin
On the violence front GTA V should be safe. I bought Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition today which is rated R for having "High impact violence, blood & gore" and really compared to alot of R rated games I can't see GTA V being as violent so I'd be surprised if it was toned down violence wise. What makes me nervous is drug use. Not so much the concept since drugs have always been apart of GTA. Hell Faustin and Vlad do coke lines in GTA IV, but the first thing that came to my mind when Franklin was walking out of the Medical Marijuana shop was hoping it was just a drop in sequence when we switch and not an actual thing we can do. Still it's messed up after everytjing to get an R18+ rating and we still have to worry about censorship. To be honest I haven't pre-ordered yet because I simply don't know what's going to happen. Hopefully our fears will be put to rest and it'll be classified without any problems.
Freezer89
I'm American, so I don't care. ESRB FTW. Well, if ESRB sticks V with AO, MS and Sony will refuse to license it for their consoles. There is no government censorship, but it still doesn't mean that developers can do whatever they want if they want the game to sell. On the other hand, AO rating would require a pretty major slip-up on R*'s part. *cough*hot coffee*cough* So it's very unlikely that this will be even an issue. But isn't AO = adults only -> 18+? Like lots of other rating systems in Europe or Australia where it's 18+ (PEGI, USK, etc) too? So it's either M (17) or AO (18)? Kind of strange in my opinion.. just a year difference. theworldfamous
I'd vote against a rating system.. that's what I would do. Now it just acts as a completely arbitrary rule of censorship, it's ridiculous and doesn't serve any purpose it's supposedly designed for. A. kids aren't that sensitive to violent entertainment, they're sensitive to the messaging.. there is plenty of non violent entertainment around with some really bad messaging behind it. GTA shows you a lot of bad things, but ridicules them constantly.. actually, it's a positive message. I don't think anybody wanted to be more like Brucie, Elizabeta or even Niko. Also, things that scare kids are often not covered by the labeling because it can be anything. I could watch Rambo when I was six, no problem.. but there was this one kid's show that creeped the hell out of me. B. ratings don't work to keep entertainment out of the hands of kids.. it attracts them if anything, makes it more exciting. C. the ratings system is completely skewed. A high level of violence is okay, but sex isn't.. messaging isn't really considered at all. This game features drug use. Okay, so.. how? What's the message? What's the context? Are we showing gang violence as something cool and to glorify or as cardboard cutout gangster as cannon fodder in some cop game.. or as a complex and painful social ill affecting urban life? I'd rather have my kids play a game like GTA that shows them all the sh*t, but makes them laugh at it and actually attempts to explain why it's stupid... than have them sit around and watch MTV or Disney channel all day where they just learn how to shop and be vain and popular little consumers. I really don't believe the myth that you have to shield kids from the 'bad stuff'.. I know that's what parents want to do, but their job is actually to expose their kids to it and learn them how to deal with it in a responsible way. But that takes effort.. so let's implement some half assed rating system. The industry's morals are seriously messed up.
