Bomberlegend
How are going to split them. What I mean as in pervious games, like in IV, there was a terrorist attack alert which stopped you crossing to the main island, Vice City there was a hurricane. Will there be water to split different areas?
FlavouredMilk
Maybe they won't maybe they'll change. Just, give us a nice big city, some nice country and gently push us and say "you want to go over here" and we turn around, PUNCH THEM IN THE FACE and fly in the opposite direction and then bail out and fall on some old lady... Cause this is GTA.
Tomern11
Well, maybe they might use that terrorism threat again. After all, in IV you could have passed the bridges at an early phase of the game. They can just block roads, and same, the police will chase you if you cross them. But, i think that they will eventually just block the countryside areas. By blockades too.

ccrogers15
This is not a lie, IGN had a map up of gta 5 but removed the post. The map showed 2 islands. Everyone said they lied, thats why it went down.
GTAknowledge
I think it will begin with the army blocking one side of the city because of a security threat. Or a gunman is on the loose and cars are blocked from entering a certain area. Without passing this area you wont be able to access the country side. You decide to break through and end up seeing the gunman on the loose.
SonofUgly
I think he's also talking about how will they be split up, like in III/VC/SA/IV there were always different islands separated by bridges, if this is just one giant city how will certain places be locked/unlocked. Or will everything be open from the beginning.
darkplague
first of all, i believe that it will be like VC, how you only had 2 seperate areas, or maybe three. the country will be across a bridge from the city. recent bridge collapses (the minnesota collapse in 2008) have prompted the government to enforce new regulations on infrastructure, shutting down all bridges leading out of the city and into the countryside, until appropriate repairs can be made

Vegetarian Piranha
*note this is a cinematic at the start of the game* just say there are 3 sections/islands, and there is a pandemic that breaks out in the country side and is becoming increasingly dangerous and is spreading towards the city. you are based in the middle section(city) of the map and are forced to flee to the next island/section. and without playing you would have already been relocated. nothing to in depth, just a thought....what do you think? RedDragonsBOOM
Okay well they say that it takes place in Los santos and the surrounding hills and countryside. That just leads me to believe that it is based in all of Los Angeles county. Now you gotta think how big just los angeles the city in full detail actually is. now add the greater area. look at it on google maps. SA didn't scratch the surface as far as l.a. goes and midnight club l.a. same with l.a. noire only focused on l.a. alone. The surrounding hills and countryside of l.a. have suburban towns of their own all with decent populations and airports suffice to say Los Angeles and the greater area is one big ass place with plenty of ways to border off certain places. I also might mention that a certain area just outside los angeles a small town is named chevy chase.
Trideez
Perhaps there will be a major earthquake that disrupts transportation between certain areas and as the story goes on, repairs will be made and the rest of the map will open up?

MajorVienna
I'm thinking there may be roadblocks locking off the country area due to fruitfly/bacteria controls. Or maybe there will be a story on the news of a wild crazy gunman murdering people out there and they have to cordon him.

ThePatriotsGun
Are any of you from SoCal? I just moved to San Diego a few months ago and apparently wildfires are very common in the Southern California region. So, they can block off areas with by placing police roadblocks because of a wildfire in a certain area. Just a thought.
Raptomex
Maybe trees fall and blocks the road(s) to the countryside. Whether everything is completely open from the start or blocked off it wouldn't matter to me.
The Rocker
Seeing as Los Angeles is on the San Andreas fault-line, an earthquake is the most realistic approach.

uzi 9mm
I would assume that there wil be SF and LV, plus he desert, just like SA. I hope. But wether or not, you can be sure that the map will be massive anyway, and can say that with confidence because: - there' a mountain so something that big has to have a city or enough land space on the other side of it to make it seem as if it's not on the edge of the map - We have planes, and check the speed of that jet plane, the reason planes wern't in GTA 4 is because it took away the realism factor, which R* are going for, remember R* saying featuring planes when there's only 1 city is unrealistic, so the fact that we now have a jet plane is enough to prove that not only is the map going to be big, there will be at least another city. - R* need to blow us away. Too many people were expectig 'more' from GTA4, it was more like a test, and it worked GT4 was wicked only testing the waters of what the next-gen could do, they're not exactly going to give us what we wanted right from the get-go. But now is the time for it, fans ain't got enough patience to wait for GTA6 to have fun, it's time for wht everyone wants.
MajorVienna
I did some thinking about the earthquake approach, and I don't think it will be so. It takes a decent amount of time and effort to organize and code the visuals, events and radio/audio for any event, it would only take 1 real life nasty earthquake pretty much anywhere in the US for Rockstar to make the decision to remove that from the game in respect of those who would die, having to redo all this would push the release date back and I think they already have enough experience in delayed releases to leave themselves open to this. Shall stick with my original theory although Rockstar could pull anything out of the hat, crashed UFO even.
FelipeVinhao
I'm still wondering if, for the first, they'll throw you the whole map opened from the beginning... Because, for all the excuses to block the map from the beginning on previous games, all them involved water bodies.

Solid theory! I'm not going to lie, California gets it's fair share of quakes. And given Vice City's hurricanes, it's totally within Rockstar's style. In fact, I'd love to see something at least earthquake related in this game.

I don't think so, its not like they have to take the piss out if it is it? Besides the terrorist thing has been used plenty even with 9/11. I definitely think the earthquake is possible (in fact I mentioned it a couple of days ago in another thread) and it would be a good way of making the unlockable areas element fit in with the landscape.
