Algonquin Assassin
Ok the trailer really didn't go to far into indicating what theme the game will be. In SA's first trailer it was obvious that gang culture was going to play a big part and in GTA IV's it showed Niko coming to America looking for a new life, but with GTA V's? I have no idea. Since it's not clear who the protagonist will be it's really hard to tell. I'm thinking something like Heat. Car chases, bank robberies etc. I can't see us playing as a thug from the slums of South Central again though. What do you guys think?
drkmoh
As hinted by the V, and the Hobo's in the trailers, I think it's probably going to have a lot to do with money, and economic depression.

gta_aus88
Well on Rockstars official announcement they said "Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar" So yeah i think it'll be money theme. Well it always it but this time around i think that we start off as a guy with lots of money, seeing as he said in the trailer i bought myself a big house. phs1234
I'd love something fresh. Maybe something a little more complicated than rags-to-riches or vice-versa. I think, as pointed out before, we will be dealing with a pretty well to do protag that seems to be drawn into crime as something he excels at. I am also hoping to see a lot of social commentary embedded in the story - I think R* have an ideal setting to really say some interesting things about 2011-2012 America. Turin88
Money seems to be the central theme. I certainly don't think they'll focus on gang culture like in SA.
LHC22
Well I think V's theme will be quite different than IV's. GTA IV was mainly about a poor guy who arrives to America with almost nothing, to discover that his cousin lied to him about living the american dream, etc. On the storyline, various tragedies occur, which leads me to say that GTA IV's theme overall was a litttle dark/gloomy/serious. On the other hand, this trailer had a more cheerful tone, the guy talking mentions he has money and a big house (positive things) and he also says "but well, you know how it is" after mentioning the things that have/had gone wrong when he arrived to LS... perhaps showing that he doesn't take this kind of things as seriously as other people would. And it will probably be centered around the whole "money-banking-real estate-depression-riches" theme (is that a theme??) Off topic: it would be cool if you could actually store money in a bank, take loans etc. It would make money more valuable in-game.

Marlowe.
IV was the "American Dream". I think V will be "American Greed".
Ratone
But if we look closely, GTA:SA theme wasn't really gangs and gang culture. I mean, the beginning of the game made it look so, but after a while the game seemed to dive head on into silly/funny/absurd missions for absurd characters. So, I think this is the reason why there isn't a really "clear" theme in GTA V trailer, because R* knows they will deviate from it. Anyway, if I had to elect the theme of the game from what we've seen so far, at last one of the main themes, would be money and power. Niko wanted Revenge Carl Johnson wanted to be close to his family and acted like he as always "along for the ride" Tommy Vercetti was the one who wanted money and power. Since many people expected this to be GTA Vice City, I can only imagine R* would try to do justice for these fans to make the game have this same theme, while on a Los Santos setting. The Narration and Images on the trailer (poverty-wealth), the Dollar Bill sign and the press release ("almighty dollar") seem to confirm this.
