The Made Man
Okay GTA Forum, since it seems this game is taking place in San Andreas, I thought maybe some parts of the game should focus on the Mexican Cartel or MS13. I mean in California Mexican Cartels are a big problem and so are Latino gangs. I know this may hurt some feelings... But the Mafia thing is extremely overrated and over done! I mean the Mafia thing is done in every game, including GTA. The thing I liked about GTA 4 was the Russian Mafia, it was something new... In real life the Russian Mafia is actually pretty powerful in Brooklyn and GTA 4 told us what the Russian Mafia was made of. We already know what the Italian Mafia is made of, the Mafia thing has become repetitive... I think the Mexican cartel would add something extremely new. I mean the Mexican Cartel is hardcore and more deadly then the Mafia. Just look at the war on drugs. If part of the story of the game is centered around drugs, then I think the Mexican Cartel or even Colombian Cartel should have a role... I also thing the Angels of Death should make a return, since they are based of off the Hells Angels, and the Hells Angels are very influenced in California. Because that's where they originated. If not, at least have multiple protagonist and one of the protagonist deals with the Mexican Cartel. This is why I think multiple protagonist is a good thing. Just sharing my thoughts... JoshGTAfreak
The only two games that really have heavy emphasis on the Italian Mafia are GTA III and Vice City in my opinion. The other games have had an Italian Mafia, but it's never really had much importance in the storyline. The one thing I would love to see is a character able to be a made man. I love the idea of being powerful in the game.

Official General
The only two games that really have heavy emphasis on the Italian Mafia are GTA III and Vice City in my opinion. The other games have had an Italian Mafia, but it's never really had much importance in the storyline. The one thing I would love to see is a character able to be a made man. I love the idea of being powerful in the game. You are kinda right on that. The Italian Mafia have not always played a very central role in all of the GTA games. GTA III, Liberty City Stories, and Vice City are the only GTA games that definitely concentrated on the Italian Mafia theme. The Italian Mafia played a lesser role in San Andreas and GTA IV, the two other main GTA games, although they were still integral to certain parts of the storylines. You cannot completely rule out the Italian Mafia in any GTA game because in real-life the Italian Mafia are pretty much established and interwoven in the criminal underworld of every major American city coast-to-coast. However, I do agree with the OP to some extent. Seeing as GTA V is set in Southern California, I think it is highly unlikely that Italian Mafia will play a major role in the game, because in real-life the Italian Mafia are no longer a powerful force on the US West Coast and this has been the case for a long time now. But it don't mean that they are not there, I'm sure The Mafia still exists in California. I don't mind GTA V featuring the Italian Mafia, the more gangs/mobs the better, but I would prefer Rockstar to stick to more realism concerning the crime groups and gangs we are dealing with in the game. If that is the case, we should expect to see more of the very powerful Mexican drug cartels (definitely), Armenian crime groups, Triads and other Far East Asian crime groups, and the West Coast Russian Mob (Russian gangsters are very active in California too). AND there definitely has to be street gangs. Expect to see African-American (Bloods and Crips), Hispanic (Mexican and Salvadorian) and Far East Asian street gangs. Maybe Biker gangs and white supremacist gangs too. All of these crime groups have a huge presence in Southern California. I just want a nice balance of different kinds of crime groups. I also really hope the Traids have a big role too, since the west coast of America has a very large Asian population.
phs1234
I found myself rolling my eyes at the mafia's inclusion in GTA IV. Their presence in GTA is somewhat contrived and pretty overdone. Hopefully, R* can move away from this cliched element of their plot. I'm optimistic that we will see a fresh plot - R*'s press release today seems to emphasize moving in a new direction. So how would you feel if street gangs all of a sudden were removed from a LA based story? As people have said GTA IV was based on NYC and NYC + the Italian mafia go hand in hand. It would've been stupid not to have them in GTA IV's story line. In fact their inclusion wasn't even the main focus of the story, but they needed to be in the game regardless. Anyway I don't expect them in GTA V. The mafia only had a role in LV during SA and since LV apparently isn't in GTA V I don't expect them in it. Although the guy everyone thinks that's Tommy could have mafia ties.

Besides in IV is making fun of the Italian Mafia in NY, showing how they are dying and irrelevant to the modern criminal underworld dominated by the Russian Bratva or Mafia. John Gravelli is the parody of the modern Italian Mafia, dying and no longer in a position of power like they were from the 1930s until the 1980s. Although the guy everyone thinks that's Tommy could have mafia ties. It's for the exact reasons you and others say the mafia is necessary that it is completely unnecessary. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I'd much rather R* commentate on and detail parts of society that have not been blatantly cliched across countless forms of media since The Godfather. The mafia and its role in crime has been done to death, and its ubiquity in past crime fiction doesn't necessitate its inclusion in brilliant crime-flavored story-telling. Does the exclusion of NYC mafia or LA gang life go against what the entertainment industry has ingrained into our minds? Sure, it does. Does that void give R* a brilliant stage to comment on 2011 Los Angeles/America/Planet Earth using plot elements that are fresh with potential for beautifully precise insight on the state of the world? Abso-f*cking-lutely. It boils down to one thing - I want R* to go beyond a simple crime story. I want them to hit me with a story and environment that I can replay in 10 years and think to myself, "Yep, that was 2011 in a damn nutshell." If they can do that using yet another mafia-infused set up, I'm all for it. But IMHO, R*'s use of the mafia in their stories has degraded to predictable, cliched, grease-ball baloney that has been reused more than my boxer-briefs. Spectre95
I for one love the Italian Mafia theme. But as an L.A. resident myself, they are virtually unheard of here. So if Rockstar wants to stay true to the Los Angeles underworld, then obviously street gangs will be making a large comeback.
