Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

The 101 freeway where it crosses under Broadway, Spring St, and Main St can be clearly found in the trailer.

Thanks for your efforts, guys.  I'd have no problem making the thread but I'm posting via PS3 right now until I fix my laptop later this week. If you're eager to have the thread, then feel free to post it.   One other thing I noticed today-  on page 10, the screenshot with the character overlooking downtown, I think the building with the yellow box around it might be the Fairmont Maramar Hotel in Santa Monica,CA.  Anyone wanna look into this?

I just checked and it's not the Fairmont Miramar Hotel However, I think I identified two other buildings in that area. Check the pic below:

It's hard to say. In real life, the blue rooftops are not very lengthy where as in the game, they appear to extend all across the roof. If there is on thing I learned in thie trailer however, it's that Rockstar is altering some of the dimensions of buildings or location of things.

Yes. I believe he is standing below the overpass that is the further away from our point of view.

Where there seems to be a construction crane, to the left of the roof of City Hall.

Back in FebruaryI wrote this thing about

doing that to facebook places. I started doing it like crazy. but some jack wad kept going back and deleting them.

I called it GTA Facebook Places or something like that.

I believe I found something interesting. If you look at the scene where the old guy, the one that looks like old tommy vercetti,who is looking down on downtown; you can see mountains over his right shoulder, which are in a southern direction. I find this interesting because you can tell from the whole trailer that all of the north and east of Los santos is hugged by mountains/hills. Also, those mountains seem to pretty far in comparison to compactness of the Los Santos we have seen so far that they have down sized from real Los Angeles. If you look at a map to see what's south of Los Angeles there is Orange County, San Diego, and Mexico. Will one of these be in the game? I'm really curious to see what's in that area where those mountains are.

well of course its going to be down sized. R* is treating this like their re-imagined NewYorkCity as seen in GTA4. Street to street, corner to corner, and building to building will not be 100% accurate with real world Southern California.

 

But just base on what we've seen so far, Los Santos does look dense enough that if we were to play, it would feel larger than what we seen in GTA4's Liberty City.

well.. maby its more long then wide..? also we coulnd see south in the trailer.. never good anyway. if u look on google maps u can see LA stretches out really far south till santa ana!. also we know that there are alot of mountains in the northern part of los santos.. but maby behind the oil thing (looking south) there is a big part of the neighborhoods of la. ( typical square blocks ) but we coulnd not check it in the trailer as of yet .

Nah, in that shot he's looking towards downtown from a south-westerly direction, meaning those mountains over his shoulder are kinda east/north-east of the city.

 

From what we've seen LS is definitely a compact version of LA like LC was a compact version of NY. When you see the distant shot of the city with the oil derrick, you can see Griffith observatory on the hills in the background north of downtown, then when you sea the Santa Monica pier shot, you can see it again on the mountains in the distance. This means the Santa Monica area is only just lost in the western haze in the background of the shot of the plane flying towards downtown. LS is big, bigger than LC definitely, but not the endless sprawl LA is. I think most of the map will be SA countryside.

I remember the mapping efforts for GTA IV on these forums after its first teaser trailer and folks extrapolated some pretty accurate maps just from that short trailer. It was loads of fun

do you think you would be able to dig some of these up for us?

Tibatonk did an incredible job in that thread. He identified pretty much every building from the first trailer and made some cool maps. It's a pity none of the images load anymore...

Hello guys!

I've created a shared Google Spreadsheet where we can add info about the location of GTA V. Since I don't live in U.S. I'm not familiar with the correct terminology when categorizing things. So feel free to add/remove/change/rearrange anything in the document as much as you like. I assume you don't have to have a Google account to be able to edit the info, since you don't have to log in.

 

The spreadsheet is divided into several tabs/sheets as you can see at the bottom of the document. A single piece of information is split up into two columns where the left one is the GTA V name and the right one is the real life counterpart.

Wish I could, but I've had a new PC since and wasn't able to salvage my HDD where I'd saved a few. I'm certain someone on here will have them somewhere though.

I mean GTA IV IMO was a perfect map. Reason why?

It was extremely interesting. You had very different

parts of town with lot of interesting features.

 

Imo if the made it GTA IV size plus 1/2 of GTA IV that

would be just right. And that half that they make

explorable mountains. So than you would have everything.

 

Mountains, big city and sea side. Nothing more that

I need or want...

 

Hope someone at least shares the same or at least

similliar opinion.

I agree. I don't need a huge map. If it's the size of Liberty City in IV i'll be satisfied. If it's bigger, fine. But as long as it's interesting and there are lots of different things and places to explore I'm happy
