Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

First of all - extraordinary job, mapping dudes. Seriously.

 

Quick question then (and apologies if this has been covered - but, y'know, 806 pages!!). What is the large complex on the East Coast, basically due east of Sandy Shores and just south of the Mountain Range label?

 

It's a bit blurry on my map, but it looks like the final word is 'research'. Is this something that's cropped up in your analysis so far? Or still a mystery?

Looks like we've only seen it once.

If anything that shot from a distance makes it seem even more mysterious. Naval research lab? Big Pharma Research lab? Evil villain's lair??

 

It's going to be so much fun exploring this map that I may never get to any missions!!

Alright mappers, like mentioned multiple times, and like I also said yesterday before seeing the map, brilliant job guys. You pretty much nailed it before being leaked.

 

By the way, there's been a discussion in this thread about a possible 4th runway that isn't marked like the airbases we've seen in the map - A small dirt one in Grapeseed, with a property icon near it. Seems likely to me and to other users that this possibly serves as an airstrip for some light airplanes, particularly the Cropduster, which would make sense in a rural area. Is there anything that confirms this, like a screenshot or a trailer scene or something? Or is it just a random straight and, in comparison to the surrounding roads, thick dirt path in the middle of the countryside?

No, it's NOT the same place.

 

It's not far from it though, just north of the "13" marker on the highway.

That is not the same place. That is slightly further north. Those are probably silos which are to the northwest where it reads San Chianski Mountain Range.

North Yankton is a mission only place.

Did the guide explain how much freedom the player would have in this mission? Can you mess around in the snow outside?..drive/steal vehicles etc? If it's indoor only that would be a little disappointing

That is not the vineyard of the trailer. What you marked are actually buildings. You can see those white buildings in the gameplay trailer where it shows you the top of Mount Chiliad and someone parachuting towards Paleto Bay.

 

See the white buildings on the left.

Hey, could one of you guys make a gif about Liberty City similar to the gif below? Some people still have no sense of scale when it comes to Los Santos compared to Liberty City. A similar gif would easily put it into perspective. I cant do it myself because I don't have GTA 4 on the PC. Thank you for your time and please PM me when you have the gif.

The desert seems small

 

People can't make up their minds. I remember countless threads where people were complaining that it seemed the countryside woud be mostly desert.

 

Now that we have the map and can see that the oppisite is true, people nitpick that too.

Considering there is nowhere else on the map that really looks like there is Epsilon activity, I would say this is in the realm of possibilities.

Imagine a huge Epsilon controlled facility where they are doing all sorts of experiments on their followers.

Could even be where they are building the spaceship.

I had a theory about a week ago that the hangar we have seen in some screens could be somewhere else than on the desert airstrip.

I looked at the location you pointed out and came up with this possibility: (don't take any of this as facts without more evidence)

We only see the back wall of the hangar in the Michael screen, but the dark corrugated iron sheets match up with those we see inside the hangar. The gable wall is built in the same way, and also made up of what looks like 16 sheets horizontally across, in both images.
