Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

You can see los santos skyline from the top of chilliad. but los santos is far away from chilliad. for you who didnt watch the videos, THE MAP WAS HUGE!

The map is huge on ground-level and it is from the aerial view for the most part too. But the LS skyline from Chilliad makes it look small. How am I supposed to believe that something that is tens of in-game miles away can be seen so easily? Here, the great draw distance is counter-productive.

Okay, go play GTA IV and take a helicopter and fly out to the water and away from the city until the city looks small from a distance. Now imagine flying that same distance away from the city with land underneath you the entire way instead of ocean. Now try to tell me that GTA V's map still seems small.

That works both ways, just because you see something from a big distance doesn't mean that the distance between them is small, it's the exact opposite, the fact that the distance is so big yet the location is still visible actually gives you a sense of scale. It's the same as watching a satellite view of Earth from space.

Simple, this thread contains spoilers. The thread has pretty much always contained spoilers if someone didn't want to know anything about the map. I think the warning should have been in the thread title from the start.

 

Unfortunately, people think spoilers from the pre-load should be talked about and they keep mentioning in this thread. And no, the spoiler tag doesn't all of the sudden allow you to show links to or show the leaks themselves.

 

This thread has done fine for quite some time without relying on leaks.

 

In my opinion this thread got ruined as soon as people decided to just keep posting leaks. There is absolutely no need to post leaks and none of the leaks even remotely show anything that hasn't been mapped so there is just no need to post it.

Of course we can see the skyline from Chiliad since we can also see Chiliad from the top of the Maze bank tower. This emphasizes how great the draw distance really is. And please don't post pictures from the leaked stuff. This is the best topic on the entire forum so it would be a shame if it gets locked.

I don't see how this is a "spoiler". I don't see how this is different from any other screenshot.

 

Other than that, the draw-distance is going to be counter-productive, I believe. The suspension of disbelief with this kind of a draw distance is hard to achieve. We won't feel like we are tens of miles away from the main city of Los Santos.

 

And no, I am not bitching, for I am amped for this game.

FB ...thats because the map will only be approx 7 miles from one end to the other. If it was '10s of miles' in length the map would be hundreds of square miles..which it isnt of course.

You're kidding right? If you can see Mt. Chilliad from parts of Los Santos then you should be able to see Los Santos from Mt. Chilliad. And how does it make the game feel small? The draw distance has been improved greatly. Likely the mountain is only 5 miles from Los Santos. In real life you can see mountains near a hundred miles from a city and they'll still look big.

Really hard to avoid all the little spoilers here and there.

 

Anyway, to be clear, I won't map anything based on leaks.

If other mappers want to do it it's fine by me but you won't find anything new on my map.

I've decided to map only what R* intended to show.

So I guess my next update will come after the website is updated again.

 

I know it's impossible to completely remove all leaks and spoilers from the forums but I'm 100% with the mods and admins.

You guys to a very difficult job and I thank you.

I agree with you 100 %, including the lock. This thread has been sheer madness the past day and it shows no sign of stopping. People will just continue to post spoilers and only a lock will stop this. After a cool down period the people who insist to talk about and show leaks will hopefully have moved on to a forum where they can do just that.

These coming weeks what would work is the thread get's locked, and people send Fido their findings in PM. When Fido wants to PROPERLY update the map, he send the updated map to an admin and they edit the OP.
