Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

To be honest, the size of the map looks barely the size of 1 rdr.

From the mods:

Final warning. Please keep these off-topic arguments out of here.

<!--SS-->This is a MAPPING topic<!--ES--> to try and identify locations we've seen so far. It is not for discussion of whether another city exists or the size of the map. Think that the archway is San Diego? Fine, a simple comparison picture will do, but if you want to drive the point home with an argument, we have places for that. This fantastic topic is turning to crap because you can't keep your arguments in the correct place. Please respect those who are putting a lot of work into this project and post elsewhere if that is all you have to say.

Think San Diego will be in V? Use The Multiple TOWNS Argument

Think LS is too small? Use Los Santos Size

Do you really want to take a vacation from these forums when Rockstar might announce GTA Online info? If not I suggest you follow through with my request.

In 16 hours more then 25 pages and almost sh*ttalking about the size. Slowly i´m realy pissed off about this.

Why does your map have two theaters (Vinewood Bowl and Greek Theater)? Isn't that supposed to be the same building?

They are different buildings, but both are located around the vinewood hill.

Kirsty explained a few pages back why it has been temporarily unpinned... it will be back up there soon.

In the meantime... this isn't perfect but I gave it a try

Have you missed the point?

The point of this new one was to add the extra old cropduster shot onto the left of it.

Read the last page!

sorry my bad

All maps in this image are to the same scale.  The green area in context is exactly 20 square miles, including interior waterways not shown.  Allowing for error due to the low resolution of the achievement icon, and small islands omitted, the GTAV map landmass is virtually equal to the sum of landmass area of GTA San Andreas, GTA IV, and the playable (in boundaries) land area of Red Dead Redemption. In the oft-quoted description of GTAV's size as the sum of those worlds plus room to spare, room to spare is literally the rooms inside the map:  interiors, underground, and underwater area.

Landmass areas of other maps:

RDR 5.75 sq mi in boundaries

GTAIV 3.31 square miles

GTASA 11.29 sq mi

Total 20.35 square miles.

Ok, so... given that the landmass of LC is known to be 5,177 m from east to west, and spans 257 px on your map, the scale is 20.144 m/px.

The distance between the (western facade of the) Government Facility and the (eastern facade of the) Getty Center is 235 px, i.e. 4,734 m.

On the blueprint map below, that same distance is 406 px, and the map is 861 px wide. That would make it 10,040 meters from east to west and 12,490 m from north to south. Lets say 10 by 12.5 km.

As these numbers are somewhat different from this estimate, I'm wondering how you got your results. Is this still based on the size of the tennis courts by the beach, or did you just assume the landmass is exactly 20 sq mi? The latter would seem a bit arbitrary.

WHAT? the tread is unpinned! Almost two years of hard work and this thread is being brought down by a doodle of the map from an achievement? It proves nothing, there is still tons to map within the boundaries! This forum is falling apart from a stupid leak! This is some climatic sh*t! Gentlemen let me be frank- f*ck the achievement, your work wasn't for nothing, in my mind you guys are geniuses. You can unpin us, you can leak achievements but you cannot- WILL NOT break our spirits, dismiss our work, invent evidence for SF and LV out of Mid-air but... BY GOD, WE WILL MAP THE HELL OUT OF THIS GAME TILL SEPT THE 17th HITS!!!! Ladies, Gentlemen... let's MAP sh*t!

The maps of the previous games you have shown are completely not to scale though, you've just made them smaller, if you look, the size of blackwater in RDR is only the same size as one building in Los Santos?? I don't think so.

Hi guys! I made a rough compare between the offical shape of GTA V map (from achievement list picture) and the mapping forum map shape. I wondering how correct this "fan mad map" was! It is really fantastic. Everyone who participated done a great job. Congrats guys icon14.gif

Personally from that picture I measure Blackwater to fit into the LS stadium which is pretty accurate when you consider Blackwater is an extremely small town with about 3 blocks

Is there a military base somewhere on the map or not?

It seems there is a military base just north of the Zancudo River, near the ocean.

It was glipsed in a plane scene in Trevor's character trailer.

Game Informer and CVG and other gaming sites said they saw a military base of some kind to the West of the map.

So far, visual evidence include a shot of some kind of control tower in Trevor's trailer

and a radar antenna in the online trailer.

The leaked achievements list mentions "McKenzie Field Hangar", so we may even have a name for it.

Something's not right. That scale makes the map look like it's barely larger than San Andreas, yet they said the map was bigger than it and GTA IV and RDR.

It's not me who showed them, but... the size of these three maps is well established. I didn't double-check them, but Magic_Al usually gets this stuff right.

Overall, it would be really useful if people who make estimates about the map size explicitly used a common metric (like meters) and a common reference (like the size of the blueprint map).

^ Yes it makes sense that RDR map, and please stop with size posts

I think figuring out the scale (as opposed to just complaining about the size) is part of figuring out the map. Especially in the countryside, this can give you a better idea of what you're dealing with. For example, see below for a comparison of Alderney and the Salton Sea (at 9.6 by 12 km for the blueprint, which is within the range of our current estimates).

That's with the underwater area.

Impressive map... And impressive work by all..

Not gonna comment on the people still on about map size, other cities and whatnot.. I have stayed away from this thread some time now as it has been invaded by unimpressive, rude members.

Only thing im dissapointed about from R* which can still turn yet, is the lack of a Catalina Island.

Initially I wouldn't have expected them to leave out Santa Catalina either -- just like I wouldn't have expected them to "re-imagine" Southern California with an east coast.

But I guess that's what the logic of the game dictates. Just like a land border (i.e. endless shorelines) ruins the illusion of an unlimited universe, a separate inhabited island may ruin the illusion of perpetual traffic.

Yeah... the airport is another feature that's interesting to compare.

Estimate based on lane width (top left) vs. estimate based on tennis courts (bottom right).

Both seem pretty reasonable.

Guys, you've done a tremendous job in this mapping thread. I follow this thread for several weeks now en the discoveries and small details already are just crazy.

Now I found something to discover the folder ad of Palla Springs, I don't know if this already been discovered.

Look at the image right next to Skyviewcafebar, with Tramaer written under it:

user posted image

It contains three different sizes of mountains: High, medium small.

Now look at this image in the background:

user posted image

There are also three different sizes of mountains in the background. Especially the low mountain slope looks exactly the same.

My idea is that these are the same and it looks like it is in the west of the map.

What are your thoughts on this?

^ Very interesting. Also, the Chiliad mountain pic is distinctly different to this one so that would further confirm that the Skyview cafe/bar is NOT on Mt Chiliad and is infact on this 3-peak mountain range.
