Wow that is epic!

I wonder how long it takes to fly from South to North of the island?

It looks like the longest overland flight would be to go straight off the runway seen in the blueprint. Without turning, you'd cross the coast in 6.5 miles. If Rockstar imposes the same aircraft speed limit as in GTA San Andreas, this would take no less than 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

That looks fantastic. Well done.

Have you tried, or is it possible to do the same sort of thing using the full size image of this panoramic shot?

I'll give you 12 cookies & a thumbs up.

Was right in front of us the whole time, Maybe that's why the mods unpinned this. You guys weren't good enough.

What are you talking about.

Please cut the spam.

Spam, I believe what you just posted was spam. Nothing to do with what i was saying. if you paid attention to the thread, you would clearly see i was talking about the image above my post. next time take some time.

Besides, i didn't know it was already found. Thanks for the clarification. I now reinstate my previous statement. Sorry.

This is a size comparison based on the size of Los Santos. (Please study that link if you are not familiar with it.)

All maps in this image are to the same scale.  The green area in context is exactly 20 square miles, including interior waterways not shown.  Allowing for error due to the low resolution of the achievement icon, and small islands omitted, the GTAV map landmass is virtually equal to the sum of landmass area of GTA San Andreas, GTA IV, and the playable (in boundaries) land area of Red Dead Redemption. In the oft-quoted description of GTAV's size as the sum of those worlds plus room to spare, room to spare is literally the rooms inside the map:  interiors, underground, and underwater area.

Landmass areas of other maps:

RDR 5.75 sq mi in boundaries

GTAIV 3.31 square miles

GTASA 11.29 sq mi

Total 20.35 square miles.

Good stuff.

When you say "landmass" is that literally the land only or does it include the water between the islands of GTA SA & the islands of GTA IV?

There has always been that confusion on both this thread & the Los Santo size thread. Just wanted to clear it up.

Cheers.

With the old, known maps, I define landmass as everything on the 2D map that is not surface water, and also within gameplay boundaries in the case of Red Dead Redemption. To be consistent, adding the lakes and rivers to the GTAV map would reduce its landmass area, but 20 square miles is only approximate for the real map due to unknown detail of the coastline and missing islands and other features.

20-21 square miles fits the description of GTAV's landmass being 3.5x the size of Red Dead Redemption, with the understanding that only the accessible, fully detailed part of RDR counts.

Cheers. Thanks for that.

I wonder over to the Los Santos size thread every now & then.

There have been a few heated discussions on there about the true size of each of those maps.

Some people include the water between the islands as they deem it to be a playable area.

Others don't include it, otherwise they might as well include all of the ocean as well.

Either way, R* have said the land in GTA V is 3.5 the size of RDR, with another 1.5 RDR for interiors & underwater. They have all the correct data.

Plus, they wouldn't say that if it wasn't true. Imagine the uproar if they were stretching the truth.

Good effort, but the angle is a little off. The brown dirt part at the bottom is repeated twice, as it is present in both of the pictures you cut and pasted. But still, here's a cookie for your efforts cookie.gif

Very disappointed in this thread not being pinned. Sorry to keep bringing it up, but the forums crew here has treated this thread and the people in it like trash, even though the mappers here really got this site a lot of attention. Constantly news sources would link to this thread and forum. They would always talk about the mappers here, and the GTA Forums staff doesn't even give a poo about it.... shame. Good work mappers, and all that you do. You are one of the sole reasons I come to this forum, even if I don't post a whole lot. You guys are spectacular and you keep mapping till you can't map anymore! Bless you guys.

In the GP trailer, we see short sequence of Trevor in a boat with some islands in the background. He then travels past the Bixby Bridge (I think that's what it's called).

We also know that sequences like that can be deceiving, for example the scene where he is being chased by the police which goes from a dirt road near the prison, to him leaving a dirt road near the Bixby Bridge in the NW of the map. If you didn't know the map very well, it would be easy to think the dirt road was the same one & that the prison was also NW on the map.

There are only 3 possibilities for the islands in the first image.

1. If the boat sequence is in the correct order, we would now know of the existence of new islands somewhere off the NW coast near Mt Josiah/Mt Zancudo.

2. If the first image was taken from an area just North of the Bixby Bridge, then we would now have a different view of the new islands seen at 2:28 in the multi player trailer.

3. The first image could've been taken from a completely different part of the map, which means the islands could be ANYWHERE on the map.

I've tried to find the location of the first image but can't conclude anything. With all the new footage & screenshots in the past week or so, has anybody spotted anything that may help?

If not, then option 3 is the only thing we can confirm.

Here's a map of what I'm trying to say.

A lot of you need to remember we've had the outline of the map since July 9.

user posted image

That's why our maps are so accurate actually. wink.gif

Anyway, those last 15 pages were really hard to read.

Coincidently, the same thing happens when some people come to this thread.

Weird huh ?

@deffpony & many others : thanks for all the kind words. We're trying our best wink.gif

I think if that's an island off the west coast, if anything it would be just a small Catalina Island spin off. I doubt an island off the coast of California could be a blizzard.

I think North Yankton/snow is either off-map location, or hidden amongst the mountains somewhere.

in RDR you had an area which was always snowy. I think it will be the same here. Don't know how to figure that out location wise but to me that seems more of an option.

Also with the reveal of the achievements. Do you think the military base is going to me more of an Area 51 type affair or there's some secret hidden base in the desert?

Hey guys, just my take on the map outline of the achievement. I wouldn't bet on its accuracy. It's just a tiny picture for an achievement. So it may be not fully accurate.

I wouldn't use it as a size reference but more as just what the outline should look like if anyone plans on making or using a fan map

Kirsty explained a few pages back why it has been temporarily unpinned... it will be back up there soon.

In the meantime... this isn't perfect but I gave it a try

Have you missed the point?

The point of this new one was to add the extra old cropduster shot onto the left of it.

Read the last page!

I'm glad that we only saw the outline and not the detail. I want to see how close the details are. I already knew the general shape was pretty much 95% accurate.
