Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

The achievement map didn't even show the spread out mountains from the multiplayer video. It doesn't really line up with the blueprint map very much.

Which spread out mountains? I assume you mean the western side of Mount Chiliad (and yes I refer to the screencap posted on the last page) but that is pretty much an illusion and you are actually seeing the mountain extend further south west instead of west. On the east side the mountains don't extend any further either and it is pretty much how the mappers envisioned it.

I meant spread out islands.

Those concerned about spoilers should avoid the page that revealed the map outline. It contains one or two (relatively mild) spoilers about side mission related stuff on the map. If you're concerned about this, you may also want to avoid Twitter and Facebook for a few days

Anyone else think that this could possibly be North Yanktown? Or is it just Paleto? I can't tell

This is confirmed to be Paleto

Ahh f*ck sake! This North Yanktown is driving me crazy

If I had to guess I'd say North Yanktown is a town that exists on top of either Chiliad or Josiah...it would make sense for a town at a high elevation to get snow

But even pictures of those mountain tops have no snow anywhere, in any pictures.

 

It must be due to a new season feature like others have pointed out, but wouldn't that require a lot of processing power (on top of the plethora of features already in the game)??

We haven't seen the top of Josiah yet

There are some islands in front of the west coast but they are tiny and they would probably not even be dots on the icon. Even the slightly bigger island we saw is probably not that important to put on an icon representing the outline of the map.

I think North Yankton is a location off the map that is only accessible after completing the game. Just look at this leaked achievement:

It's time for a little getaway.

 

I think with all your hard earned money at the end of the game, the 3 guys treat themselves to a holiday to the snow - "a little getaway". Sort of like the mission in San Andreas taking you to Liberty City outside the map. But I think you can fly back and forth to the snowy location once the game is finished. (cutscene flight)

 

Just a theory anyway...

Yeah there's those islands on the revealed blueprint on the east coast, they are pretty big (stadium sized) and if you shrink the blueprint down to achievement icon size you can't see them. They barely show up in my sig and that's twice the size.

Bare in mind that the outline of the map is very rough, detail of the sides and the little islands etc haven't been included. So Fido's map most likely is 99.9 accurate.

The forest you saw is south of Paleto. Based on the fact that you can see the little islands in the plane race scene the forest area doesn't seem to extend further west at all.

 

And we have seen a part of the north east section of the map already with a bike race on top of the northeastern mountain near the lighthouse. The icon also shows that there is nothing behind it. And the race itself again pointed out that the mountain is mostly barren with no real signs of civilization on the east of the mountain. It wouldn't make any sense either because it looked there is only dirt road there, not ideal for one town with snow. It would be a really tiny snow biome.

It could be possible they used an alpha/other map shape or even one from GTAF, but that just seems so unlikely.

The noise level went up quite a bit when it was pinned, so unpinning it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

I think the only thing to do right now is just say congratulations to Fido and all the others great mappers who did contribute to make the outline almost perfect. Imo it's safe to say this is the best topic this forum has ever had in 2 years time, maybe the greatest in the videogames history for passion and dedication.

Next step is 1000 pages, keep it up guys!

I think Fido's idea (sometimes rain is replaced by snow in some northern parts of the map) is the most plausible one, since that way, you wouldn't have a snowstorm next to a sunny beach.

 

Processing power shouldn't be an issue, but generally, snow is hard to get right, especially once it's on the ground.
