Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

Doesn't look like there's anything there.  How do you even know that's where the airport is?

Almost 2 years of mapping.

Where's the screen shots? I must have missed those.

The blueprint Rockstar released shows the airport being there too.

Yea I know, but who says that's the airport? Planes would be landing or taking off right in the path of the scyscrapers in the downtown area.

It could just be a straight road.

On the blueprint map it looks exactly the same as on older maps like from gta 4 thats also why..

I like the wqay Fido made up the bottom bit, or does he work for Rockstar?

You guys are wasting your time with all this mapping shizzle. Nobody knows anything apart from what's on the blueprint.

If we enjoy mapping, how is it a waste of our time? Enjoying what you're doing isn't a waste of time imo.

It's obviously the airport. The planes land and take off ocean side.

Planes take off and land in the same direction. So, they'd either be coming in over them, or taking off into them.

Check the building in the airport grounds, the one with the circle in it. It is the same shape as the airport of Los Santos in SA.

If people like mapping out the game I don't see how that is a waste of time. Everything north of Los Santos is mapped out based on screenshots and trailers. You can map out plenty based on the locations of the mountains you see in a lot of the media. Heck, we know a lot of what is south of the Alamo Sea, we know where Paleto Bay is located and obviously the location of the mountains. Even the size of the mountains can be determined if you have screenshots of landmarks from either side (bridge to bridge for example as one forum member has done by looking at the color of the pixels used.).

Planes take off and land in the same direction. So, they'd either be coming in over them, or taking off into them.

Downtown Los Santos is east of the fly route so planes should never have to go over the skyscrapers unless they already off route in the first place.1

If you have the time (and want to, no pressure) could you deblur the following screenshot for us just to see if there is anything behind the airport?

Also this pic:

But looking at the way the horizon is so bright (even in the unedited version) makes it look as if R* have altered it.

I don't think that is anything. You don't see anything like that circle again in the picture hancekyle just posted. The only thing I find weird in hancekyle's picture is what is on the left, but maybe that is one of the tiny islands on as seen in the blueprint or the small part in the east of the blueprint that is missing.

So because he 'made up' (or rather made an reliable estimate from screenshots) the very bottom edge of the city, the whole map is complete nonsense? Right. And no disrespect, but you've been here 3 days. I have been here over 2 years and have followed the mapping thread since page 1. It is not guesswork. It is 1000s of hours of hard work and analysis. Plus R* themselves said that the fan made maps on the forums are 'eerily close to the real thing'.

'eerily' as in, it is eerie to R* that fans have been able to piece together a map that is so accurate from just screens and trailers.

Frighteningly close. So close it is scary.

Nah, I think we've got at least 70% of the map, or am I wrong? dozingoff.gif

I think they were referring more to the shape of the map, and placement of major landmarks such as the city, Alamo Sea, Mt Chiliad and Josiah, the rivers etc.

I really believe Santa Catalina (sorry if i spelled it wrong)  Island is on the game.  But there have been no screenshots to support that really.  I just don't believe Rockstar will leave that out, unless they deem it "no very fun to play in" like they did with Staten Island in GTA IV lol

remember that Santa Catalina Island is pretty northwest so that could be but is not seen with the naked eye

It's south west of LA

thanks for correction

are even so far to see them at a glance

It is impressive. It just goes to show that, if all these different users can come to almost the same conclusion with the look of the map, they must be pretty close.

Yes, that is true. This map has gone more for the complete, nice looking appearance, so there is some speculation, especially in the east area of the map, whereas Fido's is only factual which is why there are some blank areas.

Los Santos is far more spread out.  I think we've seen the main part of Los Santos,  the land behind the mountains will probably be suburbs or surrounding urban area, like Riverside or something

This a somewhat educated post.

It doesn't blend in with the clouds.

The scale and the directions of land is pretty legit to me. ph34r.gif

Well, I wouldn't jump the gun and say that it's San Diego, but:

This is big news because your image clearly shows that there is some landmass.

However, looking at our current interpretations of the blueprint there is not really enough room for more landmass, it's too close to where we believe is the border of the map.

user posted image

This could be a hint to a double-sided blueprint map, with much more land to the south/west.

Or the position of Los Santos in the image above is wrong.

Not sure though, what do the others think?

Only because it's been filled in with speculation rather than Fido's or Kiwi's who've only placed things that can be worked out from screenshots. I do like it though.

Unclef*cker: I suggest you have a look at GTAKiwi's map and Fido_le_muet's Flickr album (both can be found in the OP) before you come wading in here telling people their wasting their time. You'll see from both of these that the basic shape and layout of the maps in here are pretty hard to argue against. Besides, if they enjoy doing it it's hardly a waste of time.
