Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

That alone is about the size of GTA IV, and that's just a sliver of the map!

Judging by the fan made maps, it ought to be around 30sqm total, so it's about 5 x that. Pretty decent if you ask me, especially coming from a game like IV.

That must leave us a lot of space left. Rockstar didn't mention any National Parks, did they? We still have yet to see any forests.

The map of LA Noire is about 8 sq miles whereas Los Santos seems to be about 6 sq miles. So LA Noire's city, based on current calculations of LS, may be bigger but Los Santos is not the only area in GTA 5.

 

Not sure how LA Noire's time from one side of the map to the other side is calculated but the street pattern of LA Noire looks somewhat "complicated" if you just want to get from one side to the other side. The street pattern of Los Santos looks easier on the eyes, also thanks to freeways and highways.

Okay apparently the right size of Los Santos is closer to 4 sq miles after checking back on the Los Santos size thread. I assumed that the 6 sq miles part a page back was about the city whereas it is Los Santos plus a part of Blaine County.

 

So anyway, that makes Los Santos only about half the size of LA Noire's LA. This doesn't have to be bad though, also considering there is more to the map than just one city.

From what I can tell, the map appears to be skipping the San Fernando Valley completely, and going right to the Coachella Valley w/ all the desert and the Salton Sea?

I hope we at least see a fictional Palm Springs then - it's certainly closer to the Alamo/Salton sea than LA/LS is.

Paleto should be just NE of there. Use the N marker in the minimap to see which way it's facing. Your second screen is more reliable as the markers seem to stick in the corners for a while instead of rotating around smoothly, I hope they fix that.

Right? This must mean the map extends further in the east.

No the building (i think it's an ore smelting building for a nearby mine, but anyways...) Is South West of Paleto, may be possible to see it from the aerial shots I'm not sure.

Yeah probably in the right side of that oval. I think the building at the peak will be connected to this factory or another building near there, it could be an aerial tramway used for mining.

 

That enormous ramp in GTA:SA's desert was meant to be an abandoned mine cart track wasn't it? Maybe they'll have something like that on the peak too.

Yes I've read everything but not contributed too much, simply because before I got started people had done so much, and I'm not the best at this sort of thing.

 

I will try help in the next release of media/screens but the pros of mapping will no doubt be quicker at spotting things. Although judging by Koeklin and Fido's current Rodeo Drive work there still lots to find.

Fido, you still need to connect the highway going north with I-2. You can see the intersection on this screenshot:

If that's a hangar, then it's a tiny tiny hangar.

Compare it with the bridge nearby. It looks really small to be a hangar IMO.

Of course, that doesn't mean that this isn't a military base...

I don't think it's an airstrip because you don't put buildings on the end of an airstrip. But I think it's a taxiing road that will connect to an airstrip off screen to the left. See my map a, few pages back for my guess of the base layout.

yeah that looks like a taxi way, the airstrip might be on the left out of the picture
