Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

I think it could be north of the Alamo Sea or a little east of it.  This image - http://i.imgur.com/Drpjd.jpg  suggests it's close to the line from the city to Mt. Zancudo.  I think it has to east of Mt. Zancudo since the mountains don't seem to line up correctly when viewed from the west.

I've used that image to place Grapeseed at the far eastern side of the map. The Hollywood Hills are further away than the freeway shot and I think the freeway makes a left after the wind farm and heads into Los Santos.

This map is too small.

Seems off center too.

I don't think the Zancudo MT. is the size of LS.

Based on the maps created in this thread shouldn't we be able to see the peeks of Mt. Chiliad in this pic?

Or am I missing something?

The camera is facing up at too high an angle for anything behind it to be visible.

This game in general is the dream game I've always wanted. Going all the way back to playing San Andreas for the first time. I thought it was fun, but I always thought they didn't do LA justice (of course, I might be being a little biased because I live in LA).

I lived in Vegas for a few years and I thought Venturas was pretty bad. Yeah, it was in the desert, and there were casinos along the strip, but other than they didn't even bother to capture the layout of the city. Plus it was boring as hell.

Then I played GTA IV, and was blown away by how even without ever actually being to NYC in real life, I really felt like I was right inside a living, breathing city like how the real life thing must be.

Know what you mean. I grew up in SoCal, and I really liked what they pulled off with RDR, so I'm looking forward to the GTA version. That screenshot that looks down the highway really nails it. I'm not sure how far north the map's gonna go, but the shot of Trevor in the mountain town and wearing the denim jacket reminds me of Big Bear a little. I'd have a good chuckle if they managed to fit some of the High Desert in there.

Anyway, there are a number of shots from high up that show a lot of city blocks, and I can see how some of them fit together. I think if I could somehow compose them together it might give us a better idea of how big LS actually is. Although, you know, no matter how big it is, a fast car and a straight road will make short work of the distance. The harder it is to get around, the bigger it's going to feel.

If we're looking at the direction of the sun in the screen saver, we can deduce that thoses places are located along the east coast of the map.

On the Lighthouse shot, the sun is rising on the right, so East is right. Then it sets on the left so West is left. We're looking at the sea so

that scene seems to be at the North-East of the map.

On the tree shot, the sun rises on the left and goes up above the tree, thus setting far away on the right. East is left, West is right.

That scene should take place toward the South-east of the map.

Road shot : The sun is rising from the left and setting on the right. We are looking down the coast so we must be looking south.

Then that place must be on the East Coast.

The way I see things, and if the sun is at the right place, we have from North to South :

Lighthouse

|

|

Road

|

|

Tree

That would mean that the mountain on the road shot isn't the western end of the Zancudo Mountain...

But that's all speculation and shouldn't be interpreted as definitive. Far from it.

All of that assumes that we can trust the sun to actually be in the right place, instead of wherever R* thought would be the best place to put it in order to show off their work. If the position of the sun is arbitrary, those bits of coastline could be anywhere. They remind me of the Oregon coast a little... very rocky.

There, that should help fuel the speculation that V is going to have northern California and SF in it (even though I think that's probably wrong). devil.gif

Man, these two mountain shots above remind me how huge they will look when standing at the foot of them. I think people believe we haven't seen the trailer 1 mountain because of it's size, but looking at this makes me think otherwise.

Has it ever been discussed what this could possibly be?

That my friend, is what I call an invention...

Cause YOU just invented the lighthouse!

No, but seriously, that looks like it could be the lighthouse

This is the same mountain that's in the pics above:

Yes it has, everything has been discussed. The chance of someone finding something new in the screenshots and trailers we have right now is 0.000000001%.

If you adjust the brightness and color of that Zancudo River screenshot you will even spot more structures.

Is there any evidence for the Santa Monica and Hollywood freeways yet? I suppose there wouldn't be much need if we are not getting the valley.

These are the Midnight Club LA and LA Noire Maps. Both developed by Rockstar (not strictly with LA Noire) it may contain similar road structures to what we see within GTA V. So it might be good to draw some inspiration from the road structures of these maps to the fan made GTA V maps. Some things will be similar surely, as they are all game renditions of Los Angeles.

I think they'll use a little of both. While Midnight Club's portrayal of LA is all squished down and the streets are all curved and bent, it still does a great job at portraying LA for what it is. I used an online video to track down all the landmarks found in the game and most of what is in GTA is in MC:LA, there might even be more landmarks.

L.A. Noire of course is a street-by-street recreation of LA from Hollywood to the river. That's not what Rockstar is going for, but the level of detail present in LAN is very impressive. I hope that's what we'll see in GTA V.

tl;dr: MC:LA's portrayal of LA with L.A. Noire level of detail.

Just been reading the IGN preview again

"We play out the first part of the mission as Trevor, flying the chopper with Michael riding shotgun. From above the Los Santos skyline looks nothing short of beautiful, the monolithic skyscrapers cutting dark, ominous silhouettes against the orange cloud-kissed sunset. To the east it’s possible to just make out Del Perro pier and beyond it the ocean, while to the west there are the rolling hills of the countryside. Far below freeways and roads snake in all directions and the pin-pricks of light reveal a city going about its business."

What does this mean for the orientation of the map?

Vinewood sign and Griffith Observatory are North or West?

Is the city of Los Santos going to be at the bottom right of map again like in San Andreas?

Ocean to the east and south, countryside to the west and north?

I'm pretty sure that's a mistake. There is no doubt that the LS coast is on the west of the map.

They are probably flying from north to south. That would explain why the coast is on the east side.

Orientation doesn't change. West is always on the west no matter where you are facing. IGN just have no sense of direction and apparently are blind.

If you look at 1:45 - 2:30.

Are we on a mountain here?

Could this be a small lake on top of mountain and it is the source of the river?

I always assumed the airfield in the middle of the map was an airforce base, but I've decided it must be where we see Trevor taking off, camera looking SW. The tall buildings in the distance would be offices at film studios, Universal and Warner Bros are north of the Hollywood hills in real life.

I don't know why I started making a map as I mostly agree with the big one, but I might as well post it before the new trailers.

The shadows effects on the water are brutal. The highway scene is the most important... Look at the light on the horizon, could that be a small town?

This mystic shadow is starting at 1:08, isn't it?

Seems like a tree to me and the shadow is that big, because the sun is setting.

Hadn't noticed that before, but yeah it looks like a tree to me.

I think this is all on the North coast, the road view is from the lighthouse looking East, the tree is from the lighthouse looking West.

Edit: no that can't be right, we see a different tree a bit further east, and the background seems to match the things in the water of the coast shot.
