This. Mountains can't be too tall in games because they would dominate too much of the map. Even Just Cause 2's mountains didn't meet 2000m tall.

How do I open the Google Earth file? It only opens Google Earth, zooms to LA, but then nothing happens. It is showing me some pics of greater LA region on the bottom, but nothing else.

I just tested the kml file and it opens perfectly in Google Earth.

Chances are "bay city ave" is referring to Santa Monica Blvd

I made a few adjustments. I made the desert airstrip the same size as the one in San Andreas and scaled that area according to that. I also trimmed some areas a little.

 

As noted, my map is about 15 square miles of land. Some parts can be trimmed, parts could still be added, and the scale could change. I'm expecting the real map to be under 20 square miles of land...

 

 

Rockstar says the map is 3.5 times bigger than Red Dead Redemption -- 5 times bigger if you include topography, as representatives kept talking about be depths of the ocean.

 

The playable area of RDR is about 5 and a half square miles. (3.5 X 5.5 = 19.25 square miles)

 

I think everything on my map lines up correctly according the screenshots, but there are a few areas which I'm not sure where to place. I believe the city is scaled pretty well. It's harder to judge the size of the countryside, but getting things in the correct positions to one another helps to sort that out.

I think that would be the maximum possible size. It could be less depending on how they measure things.

They probably just created a 25 miles^2 grid and put the map on and then either add more to the canvas (or remove some of the canvas edges) depending on the finished size.

Also for those who are interested, I'm working on a brand new, more accurate map. Most of the sight lines are quite accurate now.

I just have one issue, and that's trying to get an accurate scale of everything. It's harder than you might think, or maybe I'm just

doing it wrong. The reason it's hard is that every picture is at a different Height, Zoom, and FOV. So while you can fairly accurately

position everything on a map, scale can be quite tricky.

Bay City is San Diego... I just don't believe it is Long Beach. The Los Angeles Port is in Long Beach and we know that in the game that area is south... Near the Los Santos forum. Bay City is San Diego, it is right on a bay. Trust me.

Hey that's awesome! You made an awesome map the first time round. It'd be cool to see some of the new images added and a little more city detail (if poss)!

If it helps you could look into conceptualising it in 3D either digitally or with clay to get your bearings. Awesome work!

Also a good map, curious if you had influence from Kiwi and Fido's maps? Because they do share resemblances. I'm starting to wonder whether the Vinewood signs will be to the north, or more in the corner (NE)? I want it to be north, for some reason..

 

And GTAKiwi, I think everyone's wants you to finish your new map, and I think we can all agree that estimating distances based on screenshots (therefore scaling correctly) is the hardest thing in this thread. Good luck on it and I cant wait to see your 'sightlines'. You mean visible lines showing the location and orientation of screenshots right? All of them, or the new ones?

I'd say judging by the grid pattern in the roads the sign is directly north of downtown.

Not sure how to resize images so sorry if they're a little big.

 

Don't know if this has been brought up before, but did R*change the map layout a little. Don't know if it's exactly the same position but it very well could be. The hills are changed, I think the background is too as well as the structure of the building.
