Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

I believe we may be vastly underestimating the size of the map

The huge mountain range seen in trailer 1 is very likely to be Chiliad

Where is Chiliad?

I don't think it is the triangular mountain, Mt Alamo, Mt Zancudo or any other mountain seen North of Los Santos

I think it is actually much further away and in the Eastern part of the map

In the Game Informer preview they see "a large wilderness area surrounding a fully explorable Mt Chiliad"

To get an idea of where I think Chiliad is, go North from in between Observatory and Vinewood sign, you will arrive at the triangular mountain

This triangular mountain is large, but it is not Chiliad

If you stand on top of triangular mountain and look to the East you will see the Alamo Sea and on the other side of the Alamo Sea is where I think you will find the huge Mt Chiliad range, surrounded by wilderness/forests.

Didn't IGN say we've only seen glimpses of Mt. Chilead? I think Chilead is the huge mountain with the train tunnel running through it.

I believe that was just an "Assumption" not "confirmation".

I believe R* is hiding Mt. Chiliad colgate.gif

Gameinformer has an article about one of the maps!

Guys, because Mt. Zancudo, is not Zancudo but Chilliad. And it's looking small, but only from distance (Franklin is on parachute), at close quarters they look very huge (trailer 1)

The mountain in Zancudo river screenshot is way too small to be Chiliad

Look at the size of the roads and compare to the mountain size

The mountain in Zancudo river screenshot is just one of many mountains found North of Los Santos

Just think back to how large Chiliad was in San Andreas

I fully expect the Chiliad of GTA V to dwarf the Chiliad of San Andreas

The mountain in Zancudo river screenshot does not even look as big as San Andreas' Chiliad

At 4:50 you can see how ''large'' mt Chiliad actually was if the drawing distance would have been similar to what GTA drawing distance will be.

Just read this in the new info thread:

* he also said 5x RDR map size, the mountain in one of the screenshots is on the side of the map

So apparently, one of these mountains is at the edge of the map.

He was referring to Mt. Chilliad.

This is interesting

Which mountain? Which side of the map?

It cannot be South because Los Santos is South

Also, SIDE seems to indicate the left or right and not top or bottom

So, I bet the mountain is Chiliad and it is on the EAST side

I think the layout of the map will be

South = City of Los Santos

Centre (North of Los Santos) = Desert and mountain landscape like we see when Trevor jumps from plane in trailer 2

NW of Los Santos = Grapeseed and the "wine country"

NE of Los Santos = Alamo Sea

E of Alamo Sea = Chiliad

N of map = military base

It seems the article has been debunked as a bunch of speculation from the same demo GI got... so could just be a mistranslation or speculation at best.

@philley a view of that photo posted in natural light would be much darker also. That image has clearly been shot with a long exposure and a setting to exaggerate LAs glow.

For example look at this shot. Its been taken after the sun has set so one would think the city would be much brighter under the contrast of a dark night sky but the glow is not anywhere near as vibrant as the pic you posted.

V will be much the same but obviously with a less expansive spread of lights as Los santos is not as vast a city as the real los angeles.

I wish we'd stop calling the massive peak next to the lake zancudo. It is far too big to be zancudo.

I still believe theres alot they have showed us. its natural that they arent gonna show us everything. we've only seen part of the whole map. just part.

Has Anyone recognised/found out where this screenshot seems to be in Southern California? I'm thinking Big Bear City but im not that sure tbh.

The screenshot above always makes me wonder. Why is he wearing a jacket in this screenshot? Perhaps its colder in that area due to a higher elevation and snow is nearby. Its somewhat unlikely but its still possible. Rockstar might have been showing off different styles of clothes and Im thinking too much into it.

Nice that you gave credits to the person who originally made this map... oh no wait, you didnt. Lame.

It's hard to say, the mountaintop on the leftside of him is also visible in other screenshots. But because we only have that 1 thing it's very hard to put a location on this screenshot.

The thing I find most interesting about your map is that it shows that the further north you move the mountains and the lake, the less our "but shouldn't Mt. Zancudo appear further west when seen from the city" objection matters. It doesn't exactly solve it, but it's still good to know.
