Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

Can you use this to create the likely form of the map?

I think I can't, but I'm sure Fido_le_muet can... wink.gif

Also, take a look at this one. I'd still rather say it's all just smog, but...

If that would be true it would reduce the actual map size.

Its still just a small part of the map we are seeing right here though.

Still skeptical... but good idea, either way.

In the bottom right image, you want this peak though:

I imagine the Alamo area is south east of Los Santos not north, in keeping with their real life counterparts and natural geography.

Right, I stand corrected. The Lines I have drawn do not match up... But i am sure that is the same vicinity.

I am sure that there is not only the desert area with this lake and mountains,... What about woods? Is there any chance that there are woods in GTA V? What is it like in real life around LA? Also we have not yet seen the windmill area or the area with the rocky river (train bridge pic) or the area of trailer 1 where the plane scratches the heads of the workers between the vines,...

There are plenty of forests surrounding LA.

There are some forests around IRL LA, to the north in the San Gabriel Mountains, and around Frazier Park where the Sierra Pelonas, the San Emigdios, and the Tahachapis mountains meet.

They are about an hour's drive from downtown LA, depending on traffic conditions. If R* has a freeway resembling the 5 in-game, it would likely at some point go through the Tejon Pass, where you'd encounter some good forests.

Looks good. Very much that the Zancudo River will be near what I assume is the Alamo Sea.

Wow u got it! Anyway that industrial zone amazed me, some new factories and stuff we didnt see in IV I guess.. yes.. there were also in Broker, but this looks like massive industry and it's still alive..

Actually, the industrial area in South Alderney (New Jersey) was quite big. But what amazes me is the increased drawing distance. There was no way in IV to see so much of the city in one shot, and the evening smog makes it all look really good.

See this for comparison (LC, looking west, rendered using elevation data, click for full size):

Yea man, I forgot about that biggrin.gif yes u're right. But still thinking there will be bigger one than in LC

.. where did u get this LC pic?

You can script the GTA IV PC Version. This map (click to enlarge) was done the same way:

Basically, you divide the map in 54 x 36 areas of 100 x 100 meters each. Then you drop the player in the center of the first area, from high up in the sky, take 100 x 100 elevation samples, and move on to the next zone. Fully automated elevation survey, definitely the most constructive thing I've ever done as Niko Bellic... wink.gif

Once you have that data, almost 20 million values, pick the programming language of your choice, in this case Python, and you can plot a lot of stuff.

Wooooww these buildings far a far away.. gossh this city is gonna be huge! ( there is LAX btw )

If the thing you think is LAX is really LAX, then a lot of folks are going to crash into the US Bank Tower. I hope it's just some canal, or a glitch.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have found something that adds weight to the theory that the Salton Sea-based area is, as geographically incorrect as it may be, next to Mount Chiliad.

From a new GTA article on multiplayer.it (translated): "Alamo Sea is the name of the salt sea in California, in the background of the desert around the lake you can see Mount Chiliad".

My Italian isn't great though, so perhaps my translation is a little off. The large mountain seen in numerous screenshots might not even be Chiliad either, as the peak it is based on, Mount Diablo, is actually in North Cali.

There is also another excerpt from the article of relevance to this thread: "The map is 3 times larger than RDR, if you count the sea (explorable) it's 5 times".

Well, back to work.

Great new shots.

Great finds about the Liquor Store, the link between the Zancudo shot and the new Salton sea shot.

I'm quite please to see that Pershing Square is right where I put it on my map blush.gif

I'm off to analyse !

I cant wait to see what your maps will look like after the second trailer is released. You guys definitely put tons of hard work into this thread and its greatly appreciated and quite enjoyable to read through.

Oh wait! I think thats a train tunnel! biggrin.gif. the bridge in the second shot is a train bridge and the road leading up to the tunnel in the first shot is actually a train track. So that would mean that the Zancudo river curves around the mountain and goes down the waterfall under the bridge. biggrin.gif (would be easier if i could make a diagram.)

Haha, looks like i was right about the train tunnel.

I don't think your red line is correct, they don't match in both screenshots, it should be a bit more to the right on the bottom screenshot (outside the screenshot).

The red line as you have draw it in the first screenshot is, i believe, this part: http://media.gtanet.com/gallery/gta-5-trai...fullsize/11.jpg

So the waterfall (cannot be seen at this angle) is actually connected to the sea/lake?
