Mapping Los Santos! Building/landmark analysis

Recommended Posts

no_snacks

Cheers Lizardman.

So much for my last post for a while.

I was just wondering what areas most of the South Los Santos finds had come from, so I roughly plotted them on a google map.

Each of the little yellow squares below are an IRL building or landmark that has been used in Sth LS.

Some have been used 2 or 3 times in the game, but I've only given them 1 yellow square on the map.

It gives a good indication of where the finds have come from, but more importantly, it highlights some areas that could do with a bit more searching.

Maybe I wont head for the Hollywood Hills just yet.

Great finds Wayny !

I've been doing a similar stuff to your doted map on the post above.

I've been keeping track of all IRL buildings found ingame.

I have a huge google earth folder with every building.

I believe there are more than 400 individual locations.

You can view them by clicking on the link below.

It is up to date with today's finds.

Fido, I'm having trouble opening the file. It's giving me some vague message about google earth not being compatible???

I'm not tech savvy enough to work around the issues. Is there any way you could take a couple of screen captures of your map(s) & post them here?

Even though we know where most of the finds come from, it really helps to see them plotted on a map. I'd love to see it.

Last night I used my crappy yellow dot map to pick an area that needed some searching.

Within 15 minutes I managed to spot 1 new find & couple of possibles. It's quite a simple but useful way to organise your search.

Here's the new find.

Real life. El Pollo Dorado, 3070 Firestone Blvd, South Gate, Los Angeles.

In game. San An 24hr Diner, Capital Blvd, East Los Santos/La Mesa.

Hey Wayny !

Maybe you need the latest version of Google Earth to see the file.

Anyway, I followed your advice and took some screenshots :

1) Full view. Every landmark is represented by a dot on the map (except for those outside California, mainly along route 66).

HUYwkXY.jpg

2) LA view. Only the buildings in the LA area.

nz8wVU4.jpg

3) Downtown view.

4) From West to East : Beverly Hills, Sunset, Melrose, Hollywood.

weJuBLq.jpg

5) Santa Monica to Venice.

6) South Los Angeles, including the industrial area.

7) Salton Sea area.

That is amazing Fido. Thanks for posting them here.

I've got the new version of google earth, so I don't know why it wont open the file. I'll have a play around with my settings etc to see if I can sort it out.

Even though there are lots of buildings still to find, I can't believe how many we've already found & how far we've had to search to find them.

Being able to identify the areas with no yellow pins really does help with planning the search.

I've found a couple more buildings in the South Gate, Bell, Lynwood areas. Those areas looked pretty bare on the yellow dot map, so I thought I'd give them a go. Glad I did.

Rockstar obviously went to those places on their recon trip, but seem to have only chosen 1 or 2 buildings from each area.

It means a lot of searching for only a little result, but I suppose that is expected as there are less & less buildings left to find.

I've been having internet troubles the last few days. Haven't been able to do much searching or use Snapmatic.

A technician came out & fixed it up this morning, so I'll be able to get back into it again.

I'll post the new finds when I get a chance to put the pics together etc.

Edit. Here's the new find. Sort of a 2 in 1 find. They are separate buildings IRL, but are used as one all purpose medical centre, lab & doctor's suites.

Hello? Anyone here?

I haven't been up to Paleto Bay for weeks, but ended up there today after an epic police chase.

Spotted a couple of duplicate buildings while I was there.

Real life. Vacant shop, 2511 West Slauson Ave, Los Angeles.

In game. Paleto Bay Financial Services, Duluoz Ave, Paleto Bay. Different variations of the IRL building have been used 3 times in South Los Santos.

Real life. HV & B Machine Service, 15304 South San Pedro St, Gardena, Los Angeles.

In game. Jetsam Shipping, Great Ocean Hwy & Duluoz Ave, Paleto Bay. Also used once each in South Los Santos & Little Seoul.

Yeah, I'm reading. Always amazed by the new pics, I wouldn't even know where to begin the search. Funny to see how they used multiple versions of the same building in game, since they promised there was no copy-paste work. Oh well not a big deal. Keep up the work!

I love looking at the places in real life and than the in game equivalent of them! Simply amazing and mindblowing how all of this looks! :D Next time I speak to my one friend I will have to show him this thread and see what he thinks of it all! Massive props man! :)

@ Argon. If you're feeling up to it, somewhere in this area would be a perfect place to begin your search.

I've been spending a bit of time in the last 2 weeks searching for Franklin's Sth Los Santos house.

Obviously I haven't found it yet, but I'm pretty sure (hope) it exists IRL, along with the other Sth LS houses.

Stumbled accross a couple other in game buildings though.

Real life. Unnamed building, 5326 South Alameda St, Vernon.

In game. Los Santos Meteor, Power St, South Los Santos.

@Wayne Kerr: Haha yeah I might contribute when they announce a new region for DLC or something, but as of now, I think you guys spotted most buildings and again, I wouldn't know where to begin.

What I find most amazing is the fact that I have to blink a couple of times to see which photo is real life and which one is in-game. A few of them actually look unbelievably real, like the Los Santos Meteor one above.

Agreed. The Los Santos Meteor building has a lot of character & some nice details. It looks great in that image. The morning sun with a dark sky in the background makes it pop.

The real life building is quite plain & almost boring looking.

You'll probably find the previous tenants/business had moved out & the buildings owners decided to spruce up the place with a quick paint job.

Pity they didn't take extra care with the mouldings & details. They just spray painted the whole thing one colour. :sui:

Even though this next find has been modified a fair bit, I'm 95% sure it's right.

Real life. All Star Fish Market, 7622 South Central Ave, Los Angeles.

In game 1. Mexican & American Diner, Roy Lowenstein Blvd & Dutch London St, South Los Santos.

In game 2. Mexican & American Diner, El Rancho Blvd, East Los Santos.

This next one probably needs a 2nd opinion.

It's located next door to the Brother's Auto Glass building from the previous post which gives it a bit more weight, plus the green highlights around the windows seem quite deliberate. The names also have quite a similar vibe.

What do you guys (& girls) think? Yay or nay?

Real life. El Taco Rapido, 7401 South Alameda St, Los Angeles.

In game. Attack-A-Taco, Crusade Rd, South Los Santos.

The work in this thread is simply outstanding. Incredible work. How you are able to find RL buildings and the connect them to in gamer buildings in a city as massive as LA is beyond me.

Hey Wayny !

I'm glad someone is keeping this thread alive.

I check the thread everyday even though I'm completely out of the search party right now.

I'm currently addicted to GTA Online since I found a great crew of mature players to play with.

Anyway, about your latest finds, I'd say all of them are a match.

The Taco place is hard to match but the green neons inside the windows and the general look of the business are too obvious.

I'll get back to searching buildings eventually so don't give up, I absolutely love seeing all these finds!

Enjoy your down-time Fido.

You've put more than enough time & effort into the thread over the last couple years.

I enjoy doing this more than playing GTA Online, so I'll keep going with the search.

As I was saying earlier, I've set myself the challenge to find Franklin's Sth LS house.

I've been going street by street & house by house over the last 2 weeks, starting with Watts & Compton.

There's only several hundred thousand real life houses in the area, so it shouldn't take long.:sui::/:lol::sui:

Most of the houses are very similar looking, so it can get a bit tedious after a while.

It's like looking for a particular key in a truck load full of keys. They all look the same but they are actually all unique.

This is what I've done so far. Still got a loooong way to go.

J361ZpA.png

Each of the coloured sections takes about 4 to 5 hours to search properly.

It's definitely the most OCD thing I've ever done, but I'm really enjoying it.

If I find any other in-game buildings along the way, I'll post them straight away, but don't hold your breath for Franklin's house. It could take quite a while.

Edit. BTW, the last 5 or 6 finds have come from the red area, & I just found another one. Will post it soon.

It's been some time since I've visited this thread and I can't believe it's still going, and also looking back at all the nostalgia as well, with the speculations. San Diego, San Fernando, etc.

Impressive work guys! I can't believe Rockstar gave in this much detail. It's freaky actually.

I have not posted many times on this thread since the game came out. But I always chick in to see what you have found.

All these buildings being similar to the ones in real life shows just how much research R* put into the map building part of the game. They must have millions of pictures from trips around LA and route 66.

you could do a GTA V holiday and visit the in game buildings. I went all across the USA in 2002 in a campervan. If I did it again I would pick out a few from the map and visit them just for a laugh and picture opportunity.

Keep up the good work guys.

I looked through a ton of posts trying to find the answer...

The big white building on the right... where is that located in the game? I think I found that section of the freeway but maybe not, I looked around for that building and it wasn't there. Then I went and got a chopper so I could get a real good look around, never did see anything remotely resembling it. I must find it, one of my greatest joys in life is finding GTA V trailer 1 locations in the game. =P

@ Druffmaul. That's the Banner Hotel & Spa building in Downtown. (blue circle)

You probably need to be on the freeway near the red "X" to re-create the scene.

I love re-creating scenes from the official screenshots, never thought about doing the same from the trailers. :^:

If you can take a Snapmatic of the scene, post it on the thread. We'd love to see it. (don't get run over though)

There's something strange about that. The construction site was present back in Trailer 1, you can see it in the scene with Michael's face.

Sorry, but i just laughed my ass off at those 3 people outside with those silly hats

R* even implented them in game. So there's your comparion right away haha

These two liquor stores are just like the prawn shop & antique shop from a few posts ago.

If the first one wasn't in the game for comparison, I don't think any of us would have matched the second one to the real life building.

Who knows how many other modified in game buildings have gone or will go unmatched. It only takes a couple of significant changes to make us dismiss them altogether.

Real life. Star Liquor, 1929 Main St, Santa Monica.

In game 1. Steamboat Beers Liquor Store, Palomino Ave & Magellan Ave, Vespucci.

Another duplicate to one of your earlier finds Mrthingus..

This L.S. warehouse on Buccaneer Way, Cypress Flats is a modified version of an unnamed warehouse on Innocence Blvd, La Mesa.

As previously posted, they are most probably based on the Central City Studio buildings.

Hey CiviX, welcome to the thread.

haha...I only just noticed the guys in the funny hats since you pointed it out. I was probably paying too much attention to the building to notice before.

Nearly all of the buildings on & around the pier have been identified, including the 2 you're talking about.

Here's a snapshot from the interactive map that shows the identified buildings.

Here's a link to the interactive map. http://grandtheftdat...0,0,2,satellite

The link is also on the front page of the thread under the "Interactive Map" heading. It's worth checking out. Just give it a minute or two to load.
