we know gta likes to pen us in at the start of the game and then open up the entire map to us in stages.

can you see r* changing this format and giving us access to the impossibly huge area of Los Santos (yeah, V) and its surrounding countryside from the start?

Is this really neccesary to make such topic about it now...?

I hate to bump a dying thread, but yeah, I think it is a good topic. We now know it's just going to be one city. Looking at the wide-view shots in the trailer I don't see any natural barriers that could be used to section off locations.

agree there doesnt seem to be much to stop the player accessing the whole map from the start.

i like to venture off into a new gta city early on before i do many missions.

it would be mind blowing if they had the city open from the start. it would be days before i did a mission

They've said in the past that they were going to get rid of that with the next installment, but it hasn't happened yet. Expect to be restricted.

Hmm do you remember when/where that was? I'm not casting doubts, I just don't recall ever seeing that. Sounds interesting.

I do think they will continue the trend of unlocking the city partially throughout the story. It's been used in every GTA from the start except for expansions and Chinatown Wars, if I remember correctly. They even used the same concept in other games like Bully and Red Dead Redemption.

I'm guessing the reason it wasn't present in L.A. Noire is, apart from being developed by a different company, that the city itself is so vast yet so non-interactive that there was no need to have to unlock it. There's not really lots of things to do or see in other parts of the city... that's why they have you unlock the islands in GTA games. So it's a treat to get new fun areas to explore at different times, instead of exploring everything at once and having a mediocre introduction to such a large area. That, and it's a way of getting you to actually play the story which they worked on so much and want you to enjoy.

Most likely earthquake smile.gif

I give that a good chance, earthquakes and mass destructions.

I think the city will be open, but you can't get to the countryside 'till later on in the game. (And the countryside should be where the Army base is, so you can steal a jet)

My thoughts exactly. And like someone said, probably because of the risk of earthquakes.

I hope it's all open from the start. You don't need to use the entire city in the storyline all at once. You might have some areas that are too dangerous to go into early when you're not properly equipped or, if there are skills you need to build up like in SA, you lack what you need to hold your own in there.

If it's just LS + surrounding area, I think it will be open. Countryside is nice for diversity, but the emphasis of the game is very much on cities. To me it wouldn't make sense for them to lock off the countryside at the start of the game - it would just be an anti-climax when you do finally go there.

I think it will be closed off. I think it is more rewarding this way when you do open it up and discover things. Perhaps it will be closed off because of fears of a small metor strike or an earthquake (both 2012 related)

I'm hoping they find some ways to close certain parts off, I don't want it all open from the start, I like that idea of unlocking parts of the city after making my way through the story, it's satisfying when a new place unlocks

Effy in Chains

How about a civil war caused by the recession?

So the army have blockaded off each part of the city. (divide & conquer)

It you use a plane to cross the blockade, they sent jet fights after you.

This will be interesting actually. LS wont be a city island like LC was in GTA IV. I wouldn't be surprised if everywhere in the city is opened from the start.

My thoughts exactly. They cant block off say 40 streets that lead to the other half of LS.. If the countryside is blocked off then I'd be disappointed.

Maybe we'll start in a rural town in the vast countryside and LS will be blocked off?

Maybe the protag will be on parole/bail with conditions he doesn't enter parts of LS, or even an electronic ankle tag..

I can't see any other way of sectioning off part of a city.
