Possible 9/11 Terror Attack?

Looking through the news a bit and I found this article here.

Just days before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. counterterrorism officials were chasing a credible but unconfirmed al-Qaida threat to use a car bomb on bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington.

It was the first known "active plot" timed to coincide with the somber commemoration of the terror group's 9/11 attacks a decade ago that killed nearly 3,000 people.

Counterterrorism officials were investigating the threat early Friday, as police in New York and Washington said they would increase their already stepped-up staffing levels in light of the recent intelligence.

An Obama administration official told NBC News Thursday that the threat "so far" was a 5 to 6 on a scale of 10.

Officials emphasized that there was a great deal of uncertainty about the threat and said they were acknowledging it out of an abundance of caution.

Reuters quoted a U.S. official as saying al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri may be linked to the threat, but that's highly unlikely, senior officials told NBC News.

"Bin Laden was more involved in al-Qaida operations" than al-Zawahiri has been since he took over as al-Qaida's No. 1, one of the officials said. "He's too busy trying to stay alive."

Still, the White House does believe some element of al-Qaida is behind the threat — just not al-Zawahiri himself.

Barack Obama received another briefing on the potential threat from National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, Chief Counterterrorism Advisor John Brennan and others Friday morning.

Jay Carney, White House press secretary, told reporters that the president ordered the national security team to double their efforts and take "all necessary precautions," NBC News reported.

Pretty interesting if you ask me. Best of hope if nothing ever happens though..

Still went about my normal business today.

New Yorkers are vigilant. They don't ignore smoking cars or bags left on the train/bus/street. The Times Square plot was foiled by a vendor who saw something and said something about it

If you see something, say something

I will definitely be paying more attention in public from now on, though

If you're American, your lifetime odds of being killed in a terrorist attack in your lifetime are 1 in 88,000, compared to lifetime odds of 1 in 228 of dying in a car accident. The odds of being a terror victim are so low, nothing you do or have done to you, short of choosing whether to commit a terrorist act yourself, makes you "more safe" or "less safe" in any significant way.

In fact the odds you'll get cancer from a single exposure to the TSA's backscatter x-ray are probably equal to your risk of being killed by terrorists on your flight if the TSA did not use the scanners, so the scanner's net benefit to you as an individual is zero. It's illogical to feel any safer after going through a TSA checkpoint, or to feel scared even if there was no TSA checkpoint, frankly. There are 87,000 flights in the air every day in the U.S. If there was no security of any kind, the largest terrorist plot imaginable could only hope to destroy a single-digit percent of those planes, and any one passenger's odds of surviving the day would be very high.

It's reasonable to want to prevent any attack, but it's very easy to get carried away creating security inconveniences that are surely more costly to more people in the long run than something blowing up every 15 years or so. Millions of people die of something every year. Over 45,000 are killed in transport accidents. 50,000 people every year will either be murdered, poisoned, or killed by a drunk driver. Every year. It's logial to ask why anybody gives a sh*t about terrorism which kills, by comparison, almost no one.

They've been saying there is rumor of a major threat for the past 9 years and 363 days. But that's all they've ever been, threats. I wont take them lightly, but I also wont hold my breath.

They might attack America. If they had an ounce of guts between them. But all they do is run their mouths and yammer on and on whilst cowering in some cave.

If it was a group like the IRA making those threats, I'd be worried. But al Queda is full of spineless, gutless, incompetent braggarts who got lucky once.

Their goals are laughable, their methods are clumsy and predictable, their targets are boring and irrelevant. Why fear them? They are the stereotypical lunatics, frothing-at-the-mouth and throwing a temper tantrum because those pesky Americans won't convert to their religion. Fear the terrorists who cloak their violence with good PR and an outward mask of legitimacy. They're the real monsters. al Queda is more like a long, thick turd. Every time you flush the toilet, there's still a brown streak left on the bowl.

All of which means for the next 2 months the uptight Republicanesque types will be lashing out at swarthy-looking people who happen to have a "q" or a "z" somewhere in their first or last name(s).

I just saw a commercial today on a NYC area news station that shows someone leaving a duffel bag on a subway, and the voiceover saying "don't assume it was left there by accident", they aired it right after they talked about this terrorism threat on the program.

This. Though it's not as simple as lifetime odds and probabilities and all that. Trying to turn the likelihood of a terrorist attack into raw numbers only tells you half the story.

Vigilance but not over-cautiousness is the key.

This threat is on the news here, where I live, and it IS CREDIBLE they tell everyone and it's already being acted upon, any lone terror cell or individual can still plan a deadly assault, one person who is a US citizen thought to be in this plan to carry out a bombing attack. The reason the 9/11 event is significant is that any where there are people living PEACEFULLY, an attack of war on them and inflicting mass casualty is where the idea that something like that should NEVER happen, it's not thought of in relation to those starving in Africa, or long drawn out conflicts, but I believe we aren't the WORLD'S police force, still, we play a hefty part as a SuperPower in the Global setting, that's an argument I took up with my mom, That as part of the United Nations, that's our Country's involvement on the World Stage. Just saying, ... add to that, not a know it all with regard to Geo-Politics, but I think we have to strive for Peace and the betterment of all people seeking the same.

The old adage they used in Ausland was "be alert, not alarmed".

If I were a terrorist, I'd set sh*t off on September 10. Or 12. But then again, terrorists have proven consistently since September 11 that they're all p. much enormously dim human beings so they'll probably try and fail to do it on the same day.

It's just sad that someone feels the need to get their message across that way, it does nothing to change things the way you want them

The Psychic Twins who predicted 9/11, Japan Tsunami said it will happen again. suicidal.gif.

Here is the exact conversation on The View:

Joy Behar: Can you predict the next attack, God forbid...?

Terry: Yes.

Linda: This is what we are seeing: there are two terrorist attacks being plotted right now—one in

New York and one in Washington, D.C. We feel they will both be thwarted...and we’re praying

they’ll be thwarted...

Terry: Airports...don’t get too complacent, you guys. Really. Don’t get too relaxed.

Linda: Something with the fall... feels like September-October...

I will laugh if its fake.

Yeah, I was kind of afraid about that... the 10th anniversary of a terrorist attack would be a pretty good time to attack again (for terrorists). confused.gif

Yeah there are most likely attacks being planned, just like any other day for a terrorist, they're always planning something.

9/11 showed that we were unprepared, and I say "we" because it wasn't just the USA, the entire world wansn't prepared for what happened on that day. But ten years later and it's very different, intelligence agents working 24/7 tracking terrorist movements, special operations teams always preparing for the worst, security measures drastically changed since then. I'm pretty confident that if anything were to happen then security forces and emergency services would be able to either stop it from happening or stop it from causing widespread damage. Plans are in place for even the most unthinkable situations.

Reports about car bombs being planned in New York and Washington. And the CIA are hunting about 4 potential terrorists but don't really have enough information, they don't even know if the names are real. But I think we can't just ignore the fact that Al-Qaeda still exists. And killing their leader in the same year as the 10th anniversay of 9/11. Not only do they want to hurt western countries, but after killing Osama they'll want to cause even more damage now. But like I said, nothing like 9/11 has ever happened again, and I'm sure it will stay that way.

President Obama doesn't even seem too bothered about the planned attacks, he's still going out to New York, Washington, and the other places affected tomorrow.

EDIT: Guess I should read the topic, Voodoo kinda beat me to it.

I'm expecting a lot of news regarding 9/11 tomorrow, but I think the only reason they want to attack is in memory of their "great leader" Bin Laden.

I bet if that c*nt was alive they wouldn't be issuing these threats.

This, so much. They operate on their home territory, which are already extremely lawless regions where this stuff is almost unpreventable. They penetrated our defenses once, and I highly doubt it will happen again.

That ad has been on the air since at least May. If you live in NYC, you are almost guaranteed to see it each time you turn on the TV

This is all just fear mongering. It's horrible how bad some people buy into it too.

You're all probably best off just sitting in your house all day being scared of some man in a cave who might attack you because he's jealous of how 'free' you are. sigh.gif

If something happens, it happens, just don't live your everyday life in fear. That's exactly what they want.

Also regarding the possible/currently happening terror attacks: 4 terror suspects have been arrested overnight in Sweden on suspicion of plotting terror attacks there and a truck bomb has exploded outside of a NATO base in Afghanistan injuring 77 personnel and killing 2 civilians.
