Low framerate with decent specs

For some reason I just cannot get GTA IV to run well. I meet the recommended specs (details below) as far as I can tell, but even adjusted the graphic options down to virtually their lowest settings I still only manage to get about 25 fps during the benchmark. During gameplay it is "playable" but is frustratingly laggy and poor quality for what it should be. Is there anything I may be missing that I haven't tried to get the optimisation?

My specs are: (using System requirements lab)

CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 Processor

CPU Speed: 2.8 GHz Performance Rated at: 5.32 GHz

RAM: 3.2 GB

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (build 7600), 32-bit

Graphics card: GeForce 9500 GT

Video ram: 2.4 GB

3D: Yes

Hardware T&L: Yes

Pixel Shader version: 4.0

Vertex Shader version: 4.0

I have had GTA IV installed on this system previously and managed to get it to run better than it currently is. However the previous attempt was a retail copy where as this time I am running it through steam (misplaced my retail copy).

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

Looking at your specs, you should use patch 1.0.4.0.

But due to Steam, you can't do that confused.gif

Have you tried commandline?

Actually, SlaveZer0 has pointed out in another topic, that there is a way to downgrade the Steam version to Patch 4-Here's how to do it, i have not tried it(as I do not own the Steam version), so I cannot say for sure if it works or not...Just a friendly heads up. smile.gif

But, that is a weak video card for gaming...Also, that VRAM is TOTAL-not Dedicated(meaning that it is shared with the system ram)Also, that processor pretty much only meets minimum, as the Recommended(according to the box), is a Quad core processor..So, Run the game on ALL LOW settings and the sliders no higher than 20 and the resolution no higher than 1024X600 and you should be able to run the game a little better-plus using Patch 4 would help too, as the latest patch is more of a resource hog on lower-end PC's...(details above on how to use Patch 4 on Steam)... smile.gif

@Radioman

I know it's not a fast CPU, but X3 should be good as IV can only use 3 cores wink.gif

And about the video card, yes it's pretty weak. But it should manage to play IV on total lowest with atleast 20 fps confused.gif

Use that thing to get patch 4 for Steam, that should help a bit wink.gif

No, thats not a decent PC.

That 9500GT is a piece of nutsack.

And the latest patch is damn much for any such specs.

I had almost the same specs and I swear that my Geforce 9500 GT made me run this game decently, and only 1 GB of video ram, Anyway I don't recommend using shadows with this video card, it gets laggy, thanks god my new Geforce GTS 450 works...

Yes, it runs decent if you set the right options.

OP is probably running IV on high settings.

That would make the game laggy as f*ck.

Let me clarify. By decent I meant good enough to run without major lags because it has done it before.

I managed to downgrade it back to the 1.0.4.0 patch and that seems to have helped. I never expected it to run well (or at all) at max graphics settings. Its now running at lot better at low graphics. When I get paid I might look at upgrading my graphics card as its been a while since I've updated my specs.

Thanks for the help guys.

I have seen some cases where the game on 9500 didn't start at all, it all comes down to having luck. Or not.

After reviewing my financial situation went out and bought a new card. Got a Asus GTX560Ti. Looked online about them before buying and it had some favourable reviews and GTAIV runs a lot smoother on higher settings now. Any of you guys have this card?

Not very smart, to be honest.

Your GTX 560 Ti will be bottlenecked pretty much by your processor, just as in my case wink.gif

For most PC games that card will do very well combined with the rest of your system. sh*te ports like GTAIV will need loads CPU power to run at their best, though.

op should get a card with at least 48 shader cores, i know that the gt 220 and 9600 gso work from experience. a gt 240 should work decently @ 1024x768
