In respect to the topic, what about you? Do you remember where you were, with who, up to what? I ask because you mentioned a personal connection to a relation nearly caught in the 7/7 attacks in another thread, making me curious as to the effect such connections have in creating vivid memories VS the more remote experience of watching 9/11 from across the pond.

To whoever dissed the new 1WTC building, do some reading first. That it has risen so quickly in the past couple years despite a thousand and one problems of all types is a testament to the men toiling hundreds of feet above the street, rain or shine. I'm amazed the memorial is finished on time for the anniversary; 6 months ago it was a mess. They havn't even started the other 3 towers yet. Each is as big or substantially bigger than The Empire State Building.

Manhattan shall reclaim its Skyline Crown.

I was 9 when it happened, and it was my first day back at school after the summer holidays. I remember my dad picked me and my sister up from school and he was telling us that 2 planes had flown into the world trade center in new york. My reaction was more of confusion than shock. It was such a hot day and I remember so many people listening to the radio with their windows down.

We got home pretty quickly as I didn't live far from the school, and we put the TV on straight away. I'll never forget the replay of the plane hitting the 2nd tower, and then watching it collapse live as well as hearing reports of the pentagon being hit and the 4th plane going down.

Imagine what races through a 10 years old's head while all of this was going on. All of the schools were let out and I was confused on what was happening. I asked a few of my peers what was the situation and I got a typical answer, "There is a fire in the school!" When I got home, my parents told me that the World Trade Center was attacked. It is truly a horrific sight that never should have even been thought of. Despite it being a decade ago, I still find it incredibly f*cking sickening; those sh*thead f*cks.

Do you guys remember this image?

I guess what was passing by this guy's head while falling down to the death, this was a damn tragedy. I remember when I was 5 years old at home, since I didnt have enough age to be in a school. I was watching some cartoon, and suddenly news appeared on TV showing all this suffering. I didnt care much at the time since I was too new for it, and I dont live in USA. But today I know what people felt in that moment. Extremely scared with death right in their front.

I had several family members involved in close calls on that day. My dad was scheduled for Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania, he switched flights a few days before because another was cheaper. My step aunt & step uncle both worked in the Pentagon when it was hit, their offices were destroyed. However, it was being renovated so they were located in another part of the building at the time of the attacks. Also, my mom was an EMT and was called to work at a ferry terminal and shuffle people coming from New York across the river, people were covered in dust and some had no clue where they were going.

I was only about 7, I remember coming home from school and my grandma was there instead of my mom, and she told me about the planes and that "oooh i hope it was accident" (she has a heavy eastern european accent), and my neighbor had to stay at our house because his parents both were stuck in New York where they worked. I remember watching replays on TV while we wondered why people were walking away instead of running. And I remember when they announced the 7 World Trade collapsing later. We set up a lego tower and would knock it down to replicate the way the towers fell. It was all innocent stuff, I didn't understand the significance of it all at the time.

Honestly, it doesn't seem like it was yesterday, it really does seem like a long ass time ago. While I remember the World Trade Center when it existed, it always looks weird when I see pictures of the towers in NYC, it's been "Ground Zero" for most of my life. Even watching the newscasts from that day, it seems like a different era.

Also, I couldn't imagine how crazy it wouldve been if something like that happened in 2011. I mean, hundreds of people would've probably captured the first plane hitting on their smartphones, thousands wouldve made movies during their escapes because almost everyone has a video camera on their phone. Twitter, facebook, etc would probably have crashed from all the activity. It may not seem like a long time to some people, but times have changed.

I don't remember that much of 9/11 it must be said, though I clearly remember 7/7- as you mentioned, I do have something of a personal connection to it. 9/11, I remember being at secondary school when it all occurred and being out of the loop for most of the day due to that, but I don't really remember and specifics.

I can slightly agree to what you're saying, but I don't get the way people make these distinctions that something that happens in a short period is soo much worse than something that has  been going on for years, which claims equal or more victims an hour (I'm not talking about just natural causes, hunger, but also wars, terrorism and other forms of murder/manslaughter).

I mean if it goes on for longer, shouldn't it just be worse? I realize that the media plays a huge part in this and they need big news like this in a short period of time so they can get their view count up. But we're not the media, that's why I don't understand why people put so much weight on 9/11 compared to other topics.

You can't just look at is as raw casualty figures, though. You've got to look at the infrastructure damage, the symbolism and most importantly the emotional impact. Terrorism is an issue of such significant danger not because the casualties are high, but because the risks of incidents fundamentally altering the fabric of society. Just look at the public mood in the US in the year or so after 9/11. It's a huge act of symbolism- an attack by a hostile non-state organisation on a great power- and such a thing has seldom happened in human history. Also, I think you'd struggle to find many conflicts since the Second World War where the daily death toll approaches 3,000 persons.

I got an IM back the day that happened, From someone I knew off Usenet, and that's for me, a remembrance of a time long gone, perhaps. It seems to me the earliest foray of online computing via PC, still very much using DIAL UP, but aside from the personal "Where were you that morning", I'd woken up to check online status and that IM came in as I'm looking at the news story in stills, it seemed like a movie, obviously, not being there, it was hard to believe that wasn't a net hoax of some sort.

RE: the Pentagon portion of the attacks, one of the US news TV segments on this week covered survivors of that incident and in depth look at the attack aftermath, Wish everyone could see these stories, There's many who think there was a US conspiracy RE the attacks, I think that's far-fetched and don't buy into it particularily but a good friend is among those who think there is a cover up of facts

I'm amazed the government, or the news for that matter, isn't using the 10 year anniversary as a scare-tactic to rape Americans even more. It was prime time to put through some crazy, bat-sh*t laws to remove our constitutional rights more.

That said, it feels like 10 years. Ten depressing years for the American economy and our society. It's just been going down hill more and more. Less jobs, larger income gap, and the above mentioned stripping of some of our basic rights. I really cannot wait until 9/11 and it's aftermath is looked at as the past because this sh*t is dragging out too long for comfort. And by that, I of course mean the affects to the issues mentioned in this paragraph. I feel for those who lost loved ones in the attacks. Definitely tragic. I was lucky enough to have had no one i know involved in it.

The day it happened I was walking into my second or third period class which was geometry. The teacher, Mr. Kutina, as I walked in stated, in a somewhat intrigued and amazed tone, "A plane just hit one of the World Trade Center towers. They think it's a terrorist attack," as he pointed at the wall mounted TV in the corner of the room. Looking back, I realize that terrorist had previously never really had a meaning to me. It since has gone through different meanings for me and I now understand that terrorist is a term that can be applied to both sides and now find it quite ridiculous of a term to use the way it is in American news and media. But I digress, as we all sat in amazement at the events. Disbelief filled us all as we watched the second plane tear into the second tower.

Near the end of the almost-hour long class the teacher wound us down and told us we need to go over a few things before the bell rang, and then proceeded to turn down the television. Just as he did this I saw it flip to a shot of smoke shooting up behind some tree cover. I remember exclaiming "Hey! Where's that at? New York doesn't have that kind of tree cover." The teacher, again intrigued, turned the TV back up. This is when we learned of the plane hitting the Pentagon. From there, the entire remainder of the day consisted of every classmate in almost complete silence, only occasionally broken by a "holy sh*t, dude" or "I can't believe this" type remark, as we were glued to the TV the rest of the day, in every class.

The conversations went on for a few weeks after that on basically a daily basis. They slowly dropped. Over the years I've heard of racial attacks against suspected, as well as confirmed, Muslims and it makes me sick. I'm one to joke about stereotypes and I even have my prejudices against some types of people. I just find it absurd when it comes to things like this. Our paranoid and ignorant society has led us to be castrated of our dignity and the dignity of others, as well as our ability to live freely. The "terrorists" surely did win this battle, as I'm sure they knew they would all along. Victory wasn't watching the towers crumble in a few hours, but instead watching our society do so over a decade.

the controversy over airport scanners screams, 'HEY, This is too invasive'... but would you rather security be lax, and you can just be the next victim of a madman? Think about it? We live in dangerous times, and we need more protection as such, but it's a shame, really

Not saying you don't have valid points, everyone does, but to protect a Country of citizens, where there are murders and mayhem even without something totally wrong, it's hard to get a handle on every thing before it happens, and as we've learned, even AFTER it happens, 10 years after it happens!

That IS happening. The news is reporting an alleged plot to set off bombs or something on the anniversary, and that the plotters may be American citizens. So there you go. It's highly questionable that our Constitutional process of trying suspected offenders under the law can survive the political hysteria of dealing with Al Qaeda terror suspects who are American citizens. Once we say government has the power to decide which Americans have rights or not, we no longer have a system of government but warlords ruling a tribe.

This is exactly how our government, and those who attacked us want us to think. Infringe on our constitutional rights in the name of security only to leave our nation a hollow remnant of what it used to be. Daily "terror" risk ratings, slowly chopping off our right to unreasonable searches and seizures, freedom of speech, and overall just creating an entire police-state. I personally have not been measurably inconvenienced by such things but I see it all the time. An elderly woman demeaned in front of a public audience trying to board a plane, indecent searches, and people being detained due to their appearance and actions all based on nonsense.

The actor Shah Rukh Khan, famous for the movie My Name is Khan which revolves around the main character, portrayed by Shah, attempting to reach the president to profess his innocence as a terrorist in modern America, was himself detained at an airport because his name matched a person on their blacklist. Is it okay to detain someone because they have the same name of another? They lose their flight and get no reimbursement, let alone the loss of their time which is above all invaluable. Outside of that, I could imagine a loss of faith in the US government, security personnel, and mankind in general in that at these times in a country that plenty of the world once felt great about these actions are happening to thousands of people week by week in the name of precautionary measures. It is okay to attempt to increase security and be more cautious but there is most definitely a point when it impacts society in a negative way, and I believe we've crossed it. It sure as hell can get a LOT worse. That's why we need to address these issues before they become so commonplace that the next step feels natural or adequate.

@Magic_Al... I don't have cable, so the best news I get is from websites and the brief stop at the TVs at work. I actually just clicked on the thread in Gen Chat here about a possible attack while mistaking it for this thread. I didn't read it, but the point I made stands. Thanks for pointing that out. It's disheartening to see the state of paranoia we've all grown into over this horrible event. As said before, I just can't wait until it's part of "the past" and we've all moved on from it.

Airport security has changed a lot in the last decade, but we shouldn't think that just because there's body scanners and all this fancy technological equipment that nothing will happen. For example, a couple of the 9/11 terrorists set off the metal detector, but in the end, they were still allowed to board the flight.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) did a pilot project this year based on what Israel has been doing for the last few decades in that they monitor body language and converse with passengers to see if they can notice anything odd (this is done on top of standard security procedures). The problem is that the Israelis have admitted they use racial profiling a lot of the time because in their opinion, racial profiling works, which of course, would come at serious odds with laws in North America. It has worked for them so far; there has never been a hijacking of an airline that has left Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, which is quite an accomplishment (then again, if you read about the security at TLV, it's pretty intense... I have a feeling sivi has been there, so he can enlighten people further as I have never been to Israel). I was watching a report the other day and a security consultant from Israel said that if security personnel had spoken with the 9/11 perpetrators before they boarded and asked them a few simple questions, there's a good chance they may have been denied boarding (of course, hindsight is always 20/20).

As for how the pilot project worked at YVR, they're going over the data now and will probably release the report early next year.

Things like air port screening are one thing, but on the other hand it's also crept into aspects of our lives that shouldn't really be subject to it. I remember someone telling me a story about how they had a little slip-joint pocket knife confiscated while taking a trip to the statue of liberty. Why would they really need to confiscate a little pocket knife? It was a "Case Peanut" and if you're not familiar, that's basically a pocket knife most of your grandfathers would probably carry. Besides that, what the hell would a terrorist even accomplish if he did take some little slipjoint pocket knife? Is he going to hijack the statue?I think it's just lame that the hysteria has crept into things like that. It's the same type of policy in Disney Land. Someone worried they're going to take Mickey Mouse hostage?

Anyway, I think we've just been talked into a lot with the idea of our "security" and "safety" being paramount. There's always this compromise on the part of the citizens and the urgency for people to just accept certain inconveniences with the idea being that it's for our own good. I don't really see how we got duped into believing such a silly thing, and you always hear people say things like, "Oh, no one ever thought of something like 9/11 happening so we have to be vigilant of every tiny little thing." It gets to the point where we'll just justify warrantless wiretapping or bogus search/seizure policies for stupid things. I mean, why have x-ray scanners that will x-ray your balls into tumors when a terrorist could just ship a bomb onto the plane like that guy that shipped himself through cargo.

The point is that when we're attacked, it will probably be something we didn't think of and that we're not protecting--that's kind of the point of attacks, to exploit vulnerabilities. We're just living some kind of delusion thinking that giving up all these simple civic rights such as expecting not to have an illegal wiretap or search/seizure conducted on you is somehow protecting us anymore. I mean, I guess that freaking out over anything from cock-tail swords to finger nail clippers being used as weapons counts as "vigilance" but I just don't' see it as helping.

What's more, don't you think it kind of begs that "The terrorists have won!" reaction when we're so hysterical in America that we've totally changed the way society behaves. We're always talking about this "Post 9/11 World". I mean, despite the terrible loss of life itself, what else did we lose because of that? A sense of security to permit our citizens our simpler rights, and a whole lot of people willing to give them up because they're afraid. How can you not say the "terrorists" have won when people are so terrorized they're worried about them somehow engineering a brilliantly deadly attack with a toothpick.

I don't think it's so much fear based anymore, but I do think a lot of politicians and lobbyists and basically the people that draft legislature realize that they have a massive amount of power that was granted to them, and they don't want to give it up so they take advantage of people and convince them that we still need this and it's gotten to the point where a lot of people will turn to that idea of, "Well, it's for the public good, we don't want another attack to happen," to basically defend everything that ten years ago would have been looked at as a horrible abuse of power and/or breach of privacy.

You believe you have a small penis

maybe not, but I always found the ''OH MY GOD THEYRE LOOKING AT MY BODY'' sh*t to be ridiculous

I tend to think its because people are uncomfortable with their own bodies. It's only natural to step up security at airports, really.

Well, there's also the concern of radiation that the machines emit. They won't even use the milimeter-wave radar which wouldn't subject people to harmful radiation.

It's 9/11 here 1:26am. I remember I was 7 years old, and it was September 11 at night time (I'm 12 hours ahead of NYC) and I was playing with toy cars and vaguely watching the television and then *Newsflash*! To most people the 10 year anniversary showed up fast but for me it wasn't that fast, but then again there's a topic for it here every year.

I really don't like the Freedom tower. One building? C'mon, they should rebuild the twin towers taller and stronger which would mean that USA wins! If they build the freedom tower then that's just a big f*ck you to the NYC citizens and the terrorists win, in my opinion.

I know a lot of people think that security since 9/11 has gone out of control, but I guess it's better to take precautions than to slide things off.

What does the size of my penis have to do with any of this? As said, I have not been largely inconvenienced by this personally, and to let you know I am quite happy with the size of my dick. As was your mom last night (oh snap!).

But seriously, quite an immature accusation on such a serious topic. I never once mentioned the body scanners. Those I feel are ok. It's just some poor shmuck who has to watch ugly people day in and day out walk into a scanner and look at their x-rayed bodies for hidden items. It's non-invasive and generally private. It's more about the pat-downs and feel-ups that the TSA gets away with, to name a few.

A step up is acceptable, but only to a certain degree, and as stated before it's gone past that point. There's only so much that can be done. As KJB mentioned, any attacks will be against vulnerable spots. While leaving a airports less secure as they are now than they were 10 years ago (and that's highly debatable), sure you could be opening up a known vulnerable spot. But anyone with a decent head on their shoulder, intelligence-wise, would still be able to commandeer a large aircraft and do what he'd like with it. Especially with years of planning. The TSA basically just implemented scanners, pat-downs, profiling, and strip searches. I couldn't imagine it being hard to understand how to get around all of that.

The biggest point is, there are plenty of other ways to attack a large group of the public. I needn't go into them all but the result of another source of transportation being attacked would result in the gov't applying incredulous security on that as well. If it were a similar type of location like a park or school, those would get shut down then locked down. A group could continue to attack many different types of places until it really does turn into a police-state with everyone fearing everyone and everything. All because it's natural for our gov't to help protect us. It sure is, and when they do it right I appreciate it. But when it turns into the mess it has with the TSA, I lose my faith in their capabilities.

Terrorism can happen at anytime, insiders can be let in, etc etc

Airport security is a joke. My friends dad actually got through with a few bullets in his pocket. They thought it was his belt but he realized he forgot to remove them once he sat down on the plane. Was at the shooting range the previous day

They assume that everyone is a suspect until proven innocent, which completly contradicts civil law. I'm so sick of this fear-mongering, no wonder you guys are in debt so much. Spending billions to fight a group you once funded. Not to mention all the dictators you guys supported. You guys are the losers in this so called war. It's the politicians and media that are inciting fear. Racism and hatred have made a swift comeback. You guys just dont realize how f*cked America is. I was there two weeks ago and poverty is so rampant. Instead you gotta kill people in multiple countries and then spew patriotic bullsh*t how you live in a brave country. American culture is so disgusting

9/11 has led to some pretty bad times. Recession finally came and there was hope that loopholes would be fixed and that there would be regulation. Nope, instead you get to bailout all the banks which abunch of money was used for CEO bonuses. Capitalism is like a mental disase. You think you can get rich, but its harder than you think. You constantly crave wealth and will do questionable acts just to obtain it. Consumer culture has us wrapped up that we will trample on each other just to get that sale (black friday) The guys at top control it all. How does this relate to 9/11? Well everything went down the drain after that tuesday morning.

I wish you guys the best but seriosuly, stop letting this sh*t get to your head.

In todays paper, it's talking about how they might be planning another attack. So guards at the airports are carrying machine guns. There was a picture with this Homeland security officer carrying a M4 Carbine. Badass! wow.gifcool.gifbiggrin.gif

This, nice summary there, have to agree with all your saying

Real easy for you to say. You don't live in America. You didn't deal with the aftermath of what happened. I was able to watch it, that's one thing, but the thousands that were involved and witnessed it, get it outta there head? f*ck off with that sh*t, that's disrespectful. Nobody needs a 'lesson' on how the ways of a "disgusting" culture work on the day "everything went down the drain".?

Being a 5th grader and watching this, it was hard to understand what was happening. But after thinking, watching those two planes crash into the towers, on live TV, is one of the scariest things I've ever seen.

10 years ago today.

It was a horrible tragedy that never should have happened. I was 8 years old at the time, remember watching it on television and at the next day at the class the teacher asked that if we knew what had happened yesterday.

I just wish that The Twin Towers would still stand there perfecting the New York City skyline.

Never forget.

All we have now is the memories of those beautiful Twin Towers.

God Bless America.

Well said, im not from america nor have i ever been there, my life long dream is to live there. It seems so much better than the UK (IMO) and i feel for the Americans, this should have never happened. I remember once my friend was talking about the twin towers and he said "when they got demolished" shows how much people know -__- even though i knew what had happened i just left the conversation and walked off whatsthat.gif

I'll be watching both "Britain remembers September 11th" and "America remembers September 11th" The British one is on first but clashes with the american one, but ill be switching to the american one when that happens.

Yeah, the possibility of being held at gunpoint by an automatic rifle because you forgot to pick up your bag or because you were running to catch a plane is totally badass.
