Rhoda
I don't know all of you well enough to start guessing what you do and don't like, but I do know this and I'm sure you're all with me on it - cancer's a bastard. All variations of cancer are terrible. They cause suffering and hardship for millions of families worldwide, but the cancer I want to talk about is testicular cancer. The reason being this forum's primary population is young males, exactly the kind of gap testicular cancer falls into. Testicular cancer primarily affects younger men and is the most common form of cancer in men aged between 15 and 44. Each year 2,000 men are diagnosed with it in the UK alone, and while that isn't a staggering number, the symptoms can be hard to spot if you don't know what you're looking for. Many feel embarrassed or even ashamed to face their doctors to confront it and deal with it. Symptoms include: • A lump in either testicle • Any enlargement of the testicle • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum • A dull ache in the abdomen or groin • A sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum • Growth or tenderness of the upper chest If you feel any (or all, though this is rare) of these, do not ignore them and hope they'll go away. Go and get your balls looked at. If caught early enough, 99% of all males are cured, which is an amazingly high rate compared to other forms of cancer. Don't panic though, as most lumps are not cancerous, but it's always better to get medical help if in doubt. Regular self-examination helps. After all, who knows your balls better than you do? Not only will you get used to how they should be feeling, but you'll notice any changes in shape and size more than someone who never checks and won't spot anything wrong. Most lumps found on the testicles are benign but any changes in size, shape or weight should be checked by your GP. Below is a video with clear instructions on how to examine your nuts, and what to feel for. Yes yes yes, I know they're eggs and that they're huge, but you get the idea. Besides, find me a YouTube video with real balls in and I'll eat my shoe. The point is, once you know what you're doing, self-examination becomes a walk in the park. Something to note though, each testicle has an epididymis (a narrow, tightly-coiled tube) at the top which carries sperm to the penis. Don’t panic if you feel this - it's normal. I was checking once and found one, I nearly sh*t tiny beetles until I found one in the other pouch and read up on what they were. Anyway, get your balls out. Start checking. Who knows, it could save your arse.
Runey
This is a great topic. A lot of my family has been effected by cancer, so take note. I know first hand, this could save your life.
nightwalker83
Yeah, I have been thinking about this only because I've been having problems down there for a month or so now. I too know what it feels like to have a family member affected by/die from cancer.
Slamman
You ever reach down to find only one "ball" and you panic?!?! hahaha I'm more concerned about my throat itching for over a week now. Cancer is close to finding some REAL cure, if you saw the news the past week, It's great news so I hope it turns out to work effectively
WF the Hobgoblin
A dull ache in the abdomen or groin I've been getting this on and off for the last two years ever since I had an inguinal hernia repaired. Ever since then my testicles ache from time to time, particularly the right one which is on the same side as the hernia was. I too know what it feels like to have a family member affected by/die from cancer. Go see a doctor. You never know, it could actually go be something serious. I'd go get that checked out, definitely. Great thread, Craig. I've felt the implications from having several close family members deal with and even pass away from various types of cancer, so having awareness out there is always a great thing. ChossenOne
Good topic. Alot of men are 'afraid' to get checked out. Good example would be my Grandfather; he died of Testicular cancer. I never got to meet him because of it, too.

T.Rez
I remember when I found a lump under my nipple. I panicked thinking "what if I'm one of the few men who gets breast cancer". But I do rub my balls a lot so I'm sure I'd notice if anything was out of place.
Swoorup
My relatives said that the nipple lump is common on male while in adolescence period. You feel pain only when you rub it!!!
Menaced
I remember when I found a lump under my nipple. I panicked thinking "what if I'm one of the few men who gets breast cancer". I had the exact same thing a few years ago. It had me so worried, but my doctor reassured me and told me it was just a "growing up" thing and would go away on its own, which it did. What a terrifying ordeal it was.

Floro Solo
Varicocele is often mistaken for ball cancer. So been there done that. Getting it examined isn't a big deal, especially in this century. anyway, it was a female doctor too that examined me. You might feel akward about it but it is actually better than a male doctor, cause females tend to be WAY more gentle. After the first check I had to get a second one 2 weeks later, it was a male doctor this time and I couldn't walk straight after he checked it out. But everything is fine now, it does not hurt. I didn't need any surgery and I can still get kids. And most of all: it wasn't cancer.

Rhoda
Okay, maybe checking each other's testicles is a little far, but still, if you'd rather have a friend do it than a doctor (first anyway, I still recommend a GP visit) and you can find someone willing, whatever works for you. Each to their own. It's weird what Floro said about female doctors too, because there's less of a divide between female and male doctors strictly seeing gender specific patients nowadays. I'm sure you can place yourself into the situation if you put a little thought in it. As accepted as it is, it is pretty personal. Do not let a friend check it out, just go to the doctor. If your friend knows more about balls than a doctor he probably has a very strange hobby.

WF the Hobgoblin
I can't imagine why anyone would feel happier having a friend ( assuming it's a dude and you're straight ) feel your balls before / instead of seeing a doctor.
Sanjeem
Cancer is a Slag, you're right. If I get any cancer at all, it's going to be Lung cancer. However these days with the amount of chemicals and toxins floating around in the city air who knows what kind of cancer could cling on to you. A J
Yes very true about prostate cancer, it is very common amongst older men and shouldn't be ignored, is it really true that 1 in 3 of us will develope cancer in life? I never really check myself out, think i need to start doing it more, I'd get my girlfriend to check, but she's a hyper chondriac. Also I am sure I am not the only one, but I do sometimes check my nuts and think oh my god I only have one, and then realise the other one is just happening to be hiding. blitz
Has anyone checked out this site? It's pretty amazing, a webpage just like the Keep-A-Breast (I love boobies bracelets for breast cancer) awareness, this is the same but for testicular cancer. It's pretty cool, there's a lot of info there and feelmyballs bracelets. It's pretty cool, actually.
