Robinski
I've always thought of a career in the police. My dad's an ex-cop and his job is cool as f*ck. I don't know the specifics but he used to do a lot of traffic stuff and moved onto work involving a lot of surveillance. Eventually he took a position where he became a trainer for both surveillance and motorcycle training (he's ridiculously big on bikes) and now he travels the country running courses and such on it as a contractor. He told me once about some crazy exercise where he (having been cleared by all affected jurisdictions of course) played a criminal going from Glasgow to London on some monster bike as fast as possible, and the students had to keep up with him or something. Not sure how much bullsh*t there was in that tale, though. Anyway yeah, if my journalism course leads to sweet f*ck all I might look into joining the police. If I couldn't land something in a role like PR, I'd try out for your average constable position. I've always been quite capable in the cardiovascular department, anyone know what the rough time for covering a mile is? Just to get an idea of how fit you have to be. With the police service it is the kind of place once your foots in the door you're generally never stuck for something, a friend of mine started off on traffic duties and now he's just moving up the pecking order essentially. A J
Im interested in this how fit do you have to be exactly for the police force? I know currently my people skills need working on, so I'm open to suggestions there, but I feel very much that I could pass any fitness examination without much problem, would it be on a treadmill though? Because although Im fit I really do hate running on and using gym equipment. I heard it was the beep test, which I always found quite simple to do. On a basic level, I'd say you should be able to run 400m at something approaching a sprint, and jog two miles without collapsing and dying. Of course there are plenty of police roles that don't require any kind of athletic fitness but they all require other specific skills, like training as an analyst and the suchlike. Kevin...
Little late to the topic but why not: I married into a job at the United States Postal Service at the Pittsburgh Mail Sorting Center. My wife and most of her mother's side of the family work there. I work in maintenance, my wife is a janitor, her mother works in timekeeping, her uncle and step-father both work with me in maintenance. Gotta love the job though. I probably work for about an hour a night (11pm to 7:30am) and basically watch movies or play games on my tablet or laptop...or...I sleep. Sounds horrible but its an environment that works under the idea that if you get your sh*t done and if you are there when they need you, its all good. Gotta say, aside from the cushy job, I love the combined income benefit that comes with being married and both of us working.

Kevin...
@Kevin, sounds like your a slacker if all you do is watch movies and play games on your job. I know, right? Seriously, its not as if I am the only one doing this. The place runs like a swiss watch and requires minimum upkeep. I would feel bad and expect to be fired, just like it would happen at any other job I have ever had, but I either occupy my time post-duties sitting there twiddling my thumbs waiting for something to jam up or break, or occupy my time between problems doing whatever the company allows me to do. Upper management does it, middle management does it, floor foreman do it, as well as the workers. Its just the nature of the job.

Moto
I manage a medium-sized team of mortgage servicers. Any time that someone is looking for assistance in making mortgage payments, through a variety of either government-backed or bank-backed programs, we work in the background to ensure all the various legal needs and timelines are met. It was a pretty stressful job while I was doing it, but once I became a manager, things vastly improved. However, this isn't my career nor what I'm going to school for. I started with my company (which shall remain nameless for liability's sake) as a collector on delinquent accounts, then I moved into working with people going through foreclosure (only remotely, never on-property). I, however, know a lot of business majors that would kill to be in my position. Benefits, pension plans, 401(k) contributions, five weeks of paid vacation a year, and still only part time so I can finish my undergraduate degree. The money I make pays for rent, food, all my loan payments and my tuition every year. By May I'll have my degree and be debt-free to boot. Moral of the story is, for anyone in college and working a dead-end job, you can do much better. I've learned an equal amount from working in a professional field than I have in my University. Playing the corporate game is one that requires a combination of finesse, confidence, knowledge, social skills, and the ability to bullsh*t on the fly. These are the skills that will get you a job...not just your education. Find a job in a corporation, the kind that makes you think you're selling your soul. You are. But you need to go there to come back.
TEoS
I am the Assistant Section Head in a Ground Satellite Communications maintenance shop for the USMC. It has it's ups and downs. Most of the platoon leadership is on point, but our Company and Battalion leadership never surprises me when it comes to handing down some jaw-droppingly stupid policies, inspections, and verdicts. KilnerLUFC
Last job I had was nothing exciting, just working as Bar Staff in a local pub around here. Was a good job, apart from the pub been located in the roughest part of the town, therefore having a bunch of dickheads come in every week. The damage to the pub was, as far as I can remember; 2 smashed windows, part of the ceiling smashed in, front door pulled off it's hinges...and me getting tasered. The pub got shut down, as most pubs are now, so lost my job. Been on JSA for the last couple of months now. Did want to do some type of manual labour job, such as decorating or something, but it's f*cking impossible to even get close to that these days. I rent a house, so can't go to college or I'd lose my house (loss of benefits), therefore I'm looking for an apprenticeship, but again, that's impossible. WF the Hobgoblin
I want to join the police, any suggestions? I'm currently unemployed, graduated from University this year, and I've worked a lot with animals and outdoors, but not so much with people. Also Kirst, chin up and keep trying, you'll find something. I tried the police and was doing alright but I failed the physical so couldn't progress any further with the position which was bait crap. You will need some people experience though, it does seem to help from what I went through anyway. A couple of years ago, I was pretty keen on joining the police. I never applied though as I was convinced that I would fail the medical and I wasn't so sure if I'd pass the fitness test either. I decided at the time to try and get super fit first then apply, but I ended up not doing either. A J
I'm currently serving in the United States Navy. My job pertains mostly to fixing electronics on board the ship. Sounds like an interesting job. I need to get on with looking through police force websites, to see if any are recruiting at present, local ones don't appear to. In the mean time I'm trying to get some more experience of working with people of various ages etc, improve on my interpersonal skills, any advice would be appreciated.... I've done a lot of volunteering in the past, but it doesnt pay too well

Due to the loss of my mum, my dad is now living in a one bedroomed house, and I've already spent 9 months living at my sisters house, so pretty much f*cked. I'm looking at going to college for an evening class, since under 14 hours at college means you're still entitled to benefits.
