Oddsock Posted August 15, 2011 Share Posted August 15, 2011 I'm a Student Police Aide with my university's Police Auxiliary. I'm basically an extra set of eyes and ears for the cops when I'm working. I don't have the power to issue citations, arrest people, or anything like that. Heck, even if I told you to not walk somewhere you wouldn't have to listen to me, but I have a radio directly to police dispatch, so if anyone gives me trouble then I can call in someone who actually has some authority. A lot of people view us as cops or at least having the authority of cops, which is nice because they'll listen to us. That being said, pretty much all of us have no illusions of grandeur, which is nice. I can't stand people with power trips. Anyway my job mainly consists of driving or walking around parts campus, making sure nothing weird is going on (drunks, medical emergencies, joyriders, open doors) or helping people (lockouts, jumpstarts, escorts). But basically, I would consult with businesses, small businesses in particular, who were going into operations in dangerous parts of the world. I'd provide them with briefings containing up-to-date information recent incidents, particularly terrorism and insurgencies, giving an overview of the other risks in the areas they were looking to operate (like infrastructure, crime levels and natural disaster risks), then consult with various other organisations such as those that provide GPS and GRPS tracking, emergency response, and also advising them what steps they can take to develop their own crisis response plans in the event of anything going wrong. Next time the fire department in my town is hiring I'm planning I'm going to take the test and see what happens. Hopefully become a firefighter/EMT here.
