dukee152
Upgrading to DDR3 isn't really futureproof. Its not worth your $100 in my opinion. DDR2 is plenty good. Just save up more money and get a Sandy Bridge/Ivy bridge system I meant uPgrading to a socket am3 with a phenom 1055 microcenter is having a deal where if you get a processor you get a free motherboard and then I spend 20 bucks on new ram
YankeesPwnMets
Now that is worth your $100 BTW are you buying from Microcenter in store or online? There are a few Microcenter stores a couple miles out of NYC and I'm wondering what they actually sell in store instead of online

Wolf68k
Wait. How is DDR3 not future proof? DDR3 is the best there is for right now. Until there is even talk about DDR4 or DDR5 like there is in graphics cards but for desktops then DDR3 is as future proof as it gets. DDR2 is nice but mobos makers are moving away from it and moving toward DDR3. If you want to get technical then nothing is really future proof since it will always get replaced at some point for something better.
dukee152
Ya I understand but wolf what do you think of the deal at microcenter I am thinking of getting a am3 motherboard when do you think people will stop using the am3 motherboards
Wolf68k
I don't follow AMD that much any more. But if you look at places like Newegg they have only 2 socket types for CPUs; AM3 and FM1. There are only 2 FM1s and I'm not kidding when I say I just now found about it and looked it up. According to some tech sites the FM1 is the new socket released few a few months ago. And there is only 20 some odd mobos that support it. The number of FM1 CPUs could be a lot higher by the end of the year. As for right now the the FM1 socket A8-3850 which is 2.9GHz performs pretty much just as good as the Athlon II X4 635 according to this review and cost twice as much. Does this mean that if you get the AM3 you should be worried that by the end of the year when he FM1 catches on you would have wasted your money? No. You'll still get plenty of performance out of the AM3 and plenty of time to to upgrade later. This is kind of like moving from a Intel's Core i 1156 to a 1155. The 1156 still has a good amount of time left in it as it stands now and it might take another year or so before it's truly phased out like the Core2 line is starting to be. So no the AM3 is not future proof since the FM1 is out, but the FM1 is still a baby so you're fine for now. The Microcenter deal, I would pick the best CPU you can afford then pick a good quality mobo to go with it. And think about the mobo upgrade part of the deal as well. If say, for example, you can spend $100 for just the mobo and CPU then I would obviously get the 560 but step up to the MSI 880GM mobo. But that's me because I have a set of surround speakers and that mobo is the only one that really supports 5.1 where as the others can as well but they also might rely on the case's front audio ports for part of that which is stupid, lame, and big problem your case doesn't have front audio. Sorry was that rant too long?
dukee152
Ya but if I do this now I'm keeping it til 2013 or 2014 do you think there is gonna be a lot of performance out of a am3 with the phenom 1055
Democrab
Socket AM3+ is coming out very soon with 8 core Bulldozer CPUs, you can use a Socket AM3 CPU on a socket AM3+ Motherboard however. There's rumours of a socket FM2 for new Bulldozer CPUs next year.
