coin-god
The Planet Earth will end in about 5 billion years by the statements of scientists, cosmologists and theoretical physicists such as Stephen Hawking. They say that it's gonna happen when the Sun dies. The Sun will die when it runs out of hydrogen. (Hydrogen is the fuel that drives nuclear fusion on the sun.) When Sun converts all it's hydrogen into Helium, it will then grow bigger and hotter, and it's estimated that it's gonna grow so big and hot that will totally burn and erase Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon and maybe even Mars. You can check Stephen Hawking's ''Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking'' DVD where he talks about this and answers many more questions about the Universe. We will kill each other first. I can assure you that.

CheesyJ
I wouldn't go by any set time. Humanity could be wiped out by a nuclear war, but you have to remember that it would only be the end of humanity. At that time, the world would continue to operate, just without us as a species. So when will the actual world end? It's a question that cannot be answered. It will end sometime before the sun expires, as that is in millions of years. Effectively, the world could end at any time at all. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 10,000 years. We just don't know.

Humans will most likely be gone way sooner than the Sun dies, but the Earth will continue to exist...until the Sun dies. Or if a sudden Meteor changes his direction or a star explodes. But, as I've read, there is not a single star even close to us that will die soon and affect our planet.
NaidRaida
[...] there is not a single star even close to us that will die soon and affect our planet. [...] True. The next star is Proxima Centauri (V645 Centauri/Alpha Centauri system) and is 4,22 lightyears away. I suppose no matter what happened to this star, it won´t affect us a bit. No star other than the sun can affect us. Even not by supernova, which may be the most powerful way for a star to die (or the only? Not sure right now). I really think something will happen to mankind before something else will bring our "natural" end. And I don´t think we´ll leave this planet. For doing this we are just a way too "incompetent" species.

That means it's four years and twenty two percent of the fourth year away from Earth for us to reach it. So, the chances of us beeing affected by this star are likely low, very low. You've got a point there, but I was just pointing a well known basic fact about science, what is a lightyear in Earth year term. Fuel will be a problem, unless we start to use some sort of hybrid rockets like we use hybrid cars on road... As well as fuel, we can include food and water. Seeing that food is too big, we have to reshape it smaller though I don't see how we can do it with water. Yet, if we don't have a proper alimentation in the space, we can get problems such as; muscle atrophy, impaired immune system, cardiovascular problems, decalcification, and more that I won't list. The food we eat has a physical, but also psychological role on humans. In other words, we need to have food that answers our nutritional needs or it might complicate the future of the mission we were sent to complete in the space. Amazing how a simple 'When will the world end' thread can turn into a scientific discussion. EDIT: Well, where I am, we learn what a lightyear is in third grade of high school... Jimmy_Leppard
The world will end the day that conspiracists stop making predictions on when the world will end. Actually, the World will end in approximately 5 billion years or sooner... The Sun will die in 5 billion years and there is nothing we can do about it. Either way, if nothing happens in that 5 billion years, what makes life possible on Earth (The Sun) will take it away in 5 billion years. That's the end of the line. It only can happen sooner than that. Anyway, that will happen a long time after I'm dead, so I'm not concerned at all. I mean, all those predictions and things how the humans will die, such as that Meteor of destrcution, 2012 or similar things for me are a much better ways to die than to be fried by Sun. That is the most painful death there is. If human race succeeds in living another 5 billion years and not blow them up with nukes or whatever, and if they live up to the point of experiencing the death of Sun, I really feel sorry for them. As savages we humans really are, we don't deserve to die like that. Edited August 17, 2011 by Jimmy_Leppard

General Scrotum
The world ends everyday for anybody that dies, that's my simplest opinion. I don't believe theories like 2012 or any others: all of them tried only to fail. It's like this sect in the United States: the leader claimed the end of the world would start in May and last six months long. Do we have any world-end effects or something? No! I've also seen a documentary on TV about 2012' world end (nope it's not the movie '2012' ). There was a man really believing the world will end in 2012 but not in December. It would end any time. He was trying to get funds to build an anti-nuclear underground bunker to protect himself and his 'followers' from the meteroids and all the other stuff. The point the proves it won't happen, in this documentary, is that he bases himself on other things than science facts. He believes the end will happen just like that (or something similar) and says the other theories didn't influence him. Case over. Theories like the one the sun would die or use all its current source of energy are the ones I tend to believe, also mentionning the ones about a big meteroid getting in contact with the planet. That would be the end of the world for any life forms on Earth and any others planet involved if it is becauseof the sun. There are two phenomena we could take in consideration too: the Big Bang, an explosion, and the Crash Bang. As everyone knows, the Big Bang is what caused the birth of the universe. It pushed everything from its point of origin away to create this big and unknown world (Earth, space, and all the other planets, stars, etc.) The Crash Bang would be the oposite: it would take back every to the point of origin. That would be the real end of the world for the whole universe. Still, after some time or maybe even right after, another Big Bang could happen creating another world that might be either different or similar to this one we are living in. Anyway, why do we bother so much about 'death' itself? It's like the ultimate form of liberation. It's like eternal sleep, and we don't have to bother of what happens after. We have no more troubles. That's my main opinion about 'death' itself.
fireguy109
There's two ways to look at this - the letter of the question and the spirit of the question. 1. "When will the world end?" Well, the world is an object or place, not an event. Therefore it cannot cease to occur, i.e. end. It can, however, cease to exist. That means the question encompasses the entire planet, regardless of whether or not humans still live upon it. Well, you can split up matter but you can't destroy it, so the world will never end. It'll just change form. 2. "When will the world end?" Well, look at it this way - if we're all gone it won't matter much that the Earth stays around after us. Therefore, the question concerns when humanity will die off. And we'll most likely dier via war/disease/natural phenomena within the next few million years. Sanjeem
The world will end when Justin bieber will release his new album This means we must kill Justin Bieber, it's the only solution. If I ever saw him passing by, If he ever did I would lob a brick at him. He would spend the rest of his life in a coma and his next album would never see the light of day.
