The Killa
I begin to question if GTAForums is keen on this hipster-ish business in any form whatsoever as I've never found a thread on it. If you're a fan of indie music, welcome. If not, here's a good chance to explore an interesting and increasingly-popular music. What is 'indie'? Simply short for independent rock. Y'know, bands that are signed to their own or independent record labels, shying away from the major ones, yes? Although now, it is slowly becoming a type of music that has it's own distinct sound. It grew out from 60s garage, 70s punk, and 80s post punk it started in the mid 80s as alternative/college radio music. Once Nirvana hit big the alternative genre split: the popular side was just "alternative" and the other half that wasn't "mainstream" (by choice or not) became indie rock. Indie began sounding alternative (because it is), although now it is expanding to more experimental and "weird" sounds. Some bands are signed to major labels yet are still considered "indie", such as Modest Mouse. Go figure. Here are some common examples. Featuring, unintentionally, three Swedish artists: If you enjoyed any of the above, then I like you. If not, well I might still like you. Regardless, here is a place to talk about any of this type of music if it so tickles your fancy. I'm always interested in exploring new artists as I'm sure most of you are. ska
Have a bit of indie stuff in my music collection, and I'm definitely pretty in to it. Tons of good stuff you can find if you just look a bit.
Tyler
The drums rule. Alternatively, here's a bit of a really underappreciated Canadian artist, Chad Van Gaalen.
The Killa
The Drums are indeed fantastic. They're sound is incredibly addictive. Likewise for this guy, who is also a Canadian act. Seems like they have a plethora of amazing sound. Gonna have to echo -ska on Dum Dum Girls too.

Rhoda
I tend to sway more towards "lo-fi" indie music for some reason. I like the fuzz feeling from it, and how when you're listening to it there's barely enough for you to grab on to. It's perfect background music for studying, working or concentrating - there's enough to keep you interested, and while it might not necessarily be catchy, you can easily get sutured in. One of my favourite bands is Guided By Voices and they have a similar style.
The Killa
no one likes indie electronica? Not at all. Indie electronica is kind of what got me into my liking of indie actually. LCD Soundsystem, Lykke Li, Royksopp (not sure if they can definitely be considered "indie" but they're good so whaddaevadaf*ck). I'm pretty picky with the style but if done well it can be one of my favorites. Speaking of Lykke Li, I just can't stop listening. Really, give it a go: And probably the most popular indie song at the minute, I tend to sway more towards "lo-fi" indie music for some reason. It's not "pretty" sometimes, but thats part of the whole experience really. Edited August 19, 2011 by The Killa

Robinski
Not sure if they count as "indie" in the definitive way (wikipedia describes them as "noise pop") but I'd identify them as such; I f*cking love Sleigh Bells and I don't care who knows it. They're getting used in a sh*t load of adverts and stuff now, which hopefully means they're raking it in and plugging away with the second album. Infinity Guitars is one of my favourite songs of the last year: Riot Rhythm is pretty dope too: Edited August 19, 2011 by Robinski
mrpain
Yes! I can't go on a day without listening to that song! The most joyful song about a massacre ever. It's definitely the best album I've got this year. Pumped Up Kicks is a brilliant track, but then so are these: Pumped Up Kicks is a brilliant track, but definitely not the best track on the album. xxxSIDESH0Wxxx
there's a couple of record labels which have bands i've been checking out lately. both labels are kind of donation based. you can purchase some stuff, donate, or download most of labels' stuff for free. they're about as "indie" as you can get, i suppose. some of the artists are punk, some ska, some rock, maybe some other stuff. quoteunquoterecords.com out of long island communityrecords.org out of new orleans. can't hurt to browse, it's free if you want it to be. Slamman
^ Posted that before, in this same music section (diff. thread) Indie music to me is defined by the College radio stations on campus, it's a bit of Alternative Rock and Adult Contemporary in some ways, but Mostly associated with the label and backing of an artist, I'd say
KilnerLUFC
Sorry if this is well known and old or whatnot, but only just heard it on Q the other night. He has yet to release any album, although he is currently working on, to be released next year, so have yet to really listen to any of his other songs. I can see him being an act you either love or hate.
Senex Iunior
Not a huge indie fan, but since 2000, I've been a huge fan of Modest Mouse. (Before 2000 they were signed to Up Records, an indie label from Seattle; MM's first album on Epic was in 2000, and back a decade ago I knew almost no one who'd heard of them.) Robinski
Sleigh Bells are my hipster band and I f*cking love them. I found them quite a way back, and after a while their songs have been popping up everywhere: Windows phone ads, Kopparberg ads and now apparently they feature on SR3's soundtrack. I love it though, hopefully all the licensing money and sh*t means they're hard at work on a second album of fantasticness.
The Killa
Sleigh Bells was a bit of an acquired taste. The excessive amount of distortion being used is becomes gradually less annoying and evolves into a good sound. Cheat
I see someone already posted some Chan VanGaalen, and it may actually have been you, Tyler, who posted this in the Lounge once. Anyways, shamefully enough I heard of him the first time back then, but I love his stuff, especially the 2011 release Diaper Island. Also, Bon Iver. Canofceleri
I really dislike the term hipster, and find indie to be a lacking catchall. Some of the bands I like I found on Pitchfork, which seems to be the defacto "hipster" site. In what way is Sly Stone, Grizzly Bear, This Heat, Dizzee Rascall, Fennesz, Parliament-Funkadelic hipster? It's just good music to me. Maybe with some of these bands I can see it as they do seem to conform to a certain "Pitchfork-hipster" aesthetic. I don't know that Dirty Projectors are the most typified example of that aesthetic, but I certainly enjoy several of their albums including the highly-lauded-by-hipsters Bitte Orca. All that being said, I took a liking to Sleigh Bell's Treats album immediately. I got it, it was great. Maybe the new album will be great to me too, but there was such a novelty in the very particular dichotomy of Treats. The whole uber-hardcore stupid-bitch-pep rally thing is pretty appealing for some reason. However, I do find some of the post-verse chatter on Kids to be grating. This is a song that I find really does the trick. Really hard not to feel like a badass en route to a drive-by while this comes on, especially when dude who sounds like a Yardie comes on. Holy sh*t!--what year did this come out! f*cking 1979?

ska
I suppose you could classify this band as indie-pop, even though they lean towards a more electronic sound, Depeche Mode-esque. The lead singer has a really kick ass voice. Also, I've been really been into this band called Cut Copy lately, Need You Now being one of my recent favorites from them. Tyler
I see someone already posted some Chan VanGaalen, Indeed it was, my friend. I caught the Vangaalen wagon pretty early on about last year, and have slowly been pumping GTAForums with his music throughout my posts. Gotta admit the guy's pretty legit. His sound is refreshing and he always tries to keep the ball rolling with new music.

The Killa
Figure I'd bump this with Sleigh Bells as touched on earlier in this thread. This one is off their Reign of Terror album, which I haven't given too much of a listen to. But I'm in love with this song.
