Not obscure for someone from the UK but for someone from the US it kind of is. Schools don't go around to every single country in Europe and teach students the proper regional pronunciation of every city in that country.

Europe? Europe?? Don't bring those filthy foreigners into this. We're the English son, we have importance and prominence over some bumhole town on the continent. You don't need to know how to pronounce Nyireghaza or Ceske Budejovice (btw that's where the name Budweiser comes from. You're welcome) but large English cities should be known. As it happens though I'm sure most people here could pronounce the top 10 largest cities in France, Germany, Spain, Italy etc.

Fine another question would be:

I would never get a reasonable answer when I ask girls this as they would say its weird that you're asking this to us, but what do girls talk about to one another ? Like when I ask it'll be about guys, abs, muscle, etc but do girls talk about who would they bang ? Or is it just a guys thing.

Yeah they talk about it. They just aren't as frank and open about it as guys because it isn't "Lady Like" or otherwise considered taboo for girls to openly express sexual feelings like that. It's expected of guys. Like my avatar ;)

How come most of the world calls soccer football ?

I'm pretty sure the name 'football' was used for soccer before american football was even invented.

Found this at http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/06/the-origin-of-the-word-soccer/

Rugby was, at that time, popularly called “Rugger”. Association Football was then much better known as “Assoccer”, which quickly just became “Soccer” and sometimes “Soccer Football”.

Guys, what's the difference between written language and dialect?

one has rules.

and the other one doesn't not has no rules so people be like puttin' their own custom flip jobs on it.

knawmean?

I speak English so I am fairly capable of pronouncing everything.

can we just pause for a moment to recognize that English is the greatest language on Earth?

ok, cool. I'm glad we took the time to do that.

seriously.

we have all the best words, the most words, and we pronounce them the best because we can say them however we want and they're always right.

The English Language: if it were an animal, it would be a goat.

What's the correct pronunciation of Leicester? I used to always say Lie-Ces-Ter but I heard recently that it's actually Les-ter

Hahahahahahaha

Such a great and constructive post their addi

Wait, you were serious? You are that lacking in education? Sorry m8, I thought you were making a joke. Disregard previous post.

Typical K-12 education doesnt teach people how to pronounce the names of mid sized cities in Britain. Especially ones with pronunciations that are completely different from the spelling. Hi my car broke down outside and I overheard your conversation. If you don't mind me weighing in, there are in fact several Leicesters in the USA. And I'm fairly certain they're pronounced the same way as Leicester, England.

What is K-12 education? Is that like advanced dog training?

I have a question. Why are American moms so overprotective like in the films we see in Europe on Saturday/Sunday afternoon in TV?

When does Newtons third law of motion apply? When:

1) Both Momentum and Energy are conserved.

2) When Energy is conserved only.

3) When Momentum is conserved only.

4) All cases.

Had this question on an exam today and I answered no. 1, anyone know if this is correct? If not, which one's correct and why? If you don't know please don't Google.

I cucked Alex Jones

I'm guessing number two, but don't take my laymen's word for it. Ask K2, he should know.

I just had an epiphany and I realized it was both.

There are alot of places which seem straight forward for pronunciation, but isn't due to their spelling. Leicester is one of these places; and as you said, the reason its pronounced wrong is because not everybody is taught how to pronounce the name of every city. Leicester isn't a mid sized city, its got its own county (Leicestershire) named after it, so can't be that small; the second smallest town in leicestershire is Loughborough ( I Believe), which also happens to be my hometown :p

Also, i agree with the whole "football" vs "Soccer" thing; football sounds alot better and describes the sport perfectly; Soccer makes me thing of playing with a girl, with socks, or an olde batman style punch:- "SOCK her"

Anyway, i will stop rambling sh*t now.. Also, worcestershire sauce was name after the gentleman that created it, not the town or county, i believe!

Mister Pink

There's a Versailles, KY. It's actually pronounced ver-sales.

This reminds me of a girl in work and we had to call the US that week on a particular project. The name of the business/place was Kaiser something. The guy in a southern accent responded:

"Do they not teach English in school any more? It's 'kaayyyzer.'

I laughed so hard.

My G/F was laughing at Irish girls names pronunciations. I welcome you guys to pronouncing; Aoife, Aishling and Niamh. :p

Before anyone asks, Loughborough is pronounced Luff-brer, with the emphasis on the Luff

Same, sans the OCD and briefness. Always called her Nia-muh just to f*ck with her.

And the US is orders of magnitude larger than Britain. With vast regional differences and geographic isolation. Cities out east and down south usually have English heritage in their naming. Cities in the midwest are a combination of German, Scandinavian, and Native American entomology. And cities in the west and southwest have a lot of spanish influence. So a small town Name Leicester in New Hampshire or Massachusetts isnt necessarily relavant to someone from the midwest like me.

I could go on about all the ignorance of American geographh I have heard in the internet. "California is in the midwest" "Montana is in the south" "Las Vegas is in California" but I dont do I?

But as VooDoo said before. Lets move on
