I can assure you "Lieu" is pronounced "Lef" in French.

I hate to piss on your chips, but Lieu is pronounced lyeu in French.

Example: http://french.about.com/library/media/wavs/aulieude.wav

I edited my post before you responded, that was a typo! I know that!

So by the French pronunciation, isn't the American way correct?

Where is an internet intellectual when you need one? Hopefully someone can provide an answer that makes some sense!

Can anyone from the UK explain please to me why they pronounce Lieutenant "Leftenant"? Or are the Americans doing it incorrectly as usual?

I'm more intrigued as to why the brits pronounce the word "buoy" like "boy".

For you brits: Americans pronounce it like "boo-ee". Rhymes with chewy.

That one is just American ignorance and making up different pronunciations/butchering the English language.

No because in the US it is pronounced as "lewtenant", whilst the correct french pronunciation would be "lyeut-nah".

As for the why, possible answer is that that that the "w" sound of the Old French word Luef (Lieu, Eng: Place) was mistakingly repeated as "v"/"f" by non French speakers.

That one is just American superiority and creating different pronunciations/improving the English language even better than the Queen herself could.

Fixed that for you, Addy. You have a bit of a stroke at the keyboard?

Obviously we aren't French so we aren't going to pronounce it entirely in French. I was just suggesting that "Lewtenant" is more in line with "Lieu" in both English and French than "Leftenant"

Why wouldn't the UK have corrected this once they found out they got it wrong? From what i'm hearing Leftenant is not used in any other English speaking military.

Can we do Colonel next? What the heck is up with that one?

Wikipedia to the rescue:

Pronunciation of lieutenant is generally split between the forms /lɛfˈtɛnənt/ lef-ten-ənt and 11px-Speakerlink-new.svg.pngi/luːˈtɛnənt/ lew-ten-ənt, with the former generally associated with the armies of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, and the latter generally associated with anyone from the United States.[1] The early history of the pronunciation is unclear; Middle English spellings suggest that the /luː-/ and /lɛf-/ pronunciations may have existed even then.[2] The rare Old French variant spelling luef for Modern French lieu ('place') supports the suggestion that a final [w] of the Old French word was in certain environments perceived as an [f].[2]

In Royal Naval tradition—and other English-speaking navies outside the United States—a reduced pronunciation /ləˈtɛnənt/ is used. This is not recognized as current by the OED, however, and by 1954 the Royal Canadian Navy, at least, regarded it as "obsolescent" even while regarding "the army's 'LEF-tenant'" to be "a corruption of the worst sort".[3]

These discussions are much more interesting without Wikipedia getting in the way. You could at least paraphrase it instead of copying directly from it!

OK, fine.

You're both right and wrong at pronouncing it and you all win the gold/fail miserably.

Better?

Sure, there is a much easier explanation here. There were 2 forms of the word back in 16th century Middle french vocabulary "coronel" and "colonel" the latter being the older form of the word dating back to the old italian "colonello" which is derived from the Latin world "columnella". Somehow it continued to be written colonel, but pronounced as the then more-modern variant "coronel" which can be pronounced as "kernel".

What I thought is that Coronel was from Spanish and Colonel was from French, derived as you described, which then begs the question why do we go with French pronunciations for one rank and Spanish pronunciations for another?

Don't several European countries pronounce it with the Ls as it is written? (Colonel)

It is both a Middle French and a spanish word. It is more likely to be adopted from one language (Middle French) than from both Middle French and Spanish.

And yes off the top of my head I know that in the French, Romanian, Estonian and Dutch language Colonel is pronounced as it is written.

Just a general question about this forum..

Can you only post two Youtube-videos in one post now?

Example: How Your Mother Met Me - Intro

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RM8e2UJkho

Get back out there.

Love of your life.

There are only two of the videos showing, I know that you could post more than that before, but what about now?

Thank god, no need to post extreme amounts of videos in one post. It's beyond annoying.

Is Retro City Rampage worth 2.99$? It is on sale now! I know this could go in the gaming section but it doesn't deserve its own thread just to ask this.

If you're into GTA and GTAII, as well as the 80s-revivalism movement going on in games, music and movies lately, then you will probably know this is one of the better examples of said movement. The humor is standard fare for an action-packed crime game, and it's pretty nice-looking and easy to play. There is a lot of replayability in the challenges and the entertaining nature of these kinds of games. It's worth three bucks for sure.

Since there's no other topic to blabber about the girl I liked and had the balls to talk to, well I must update you guys after being gone for some time. Sort of a question but here I go.

I didn't end up asking the girl I liked to hang with my friends and I, but I talked to her a bit on facebook. I learned things about her and she learned things about me. Currently, I say I moved on from being an acquantince to a friend, just a friend. So anyways, today was a friday and it was an average day, and I made small talk with her in class. After school, I noticed she was alone picking things out from her locker. I came up to her and she smiled right when I got there. It felt amazing knowing she knows I exist now. I have the same lunch hour as her and we don't sit in the same table, but she comes up to me during and just makes jokes and random sh*t and goes back to her table. I feel like I'm in the right place right now. But I don't want to show her I want to be just friends. Should I be a little more flirty? I'm just really happy. #swag.

Is $80 dollars a good discount for a brand new laptop that cost around $500? I had to buy a new one.. and this one is purpley blueeeee <333 I took really bad care of mine, so to repair it and get a new hard drive would have been the same as buying a cheap laptop. But I opted for a slightly more expensive and better/bigger one and got $80 dollars off because my bestfriend sold it to me because she works at a computer place.. but I almost feel like she could have given me more... hahaha I'm just be greedy. I'm thankful.

Only if the machine has the specs to run the programs you will be putting into it.

Especially check the Video graphics spec, that seems to be were most laptops fail.

The processor speed, graphics card type and speed RAM size, hard drive size etc etc. Maybe his would be easier if you just post a link to the laptop in question.

It's a decent laptop for what you want but it is overpriced in my opinion. You can get a laptop for a lesser price but with similar specs.

No telling how many sims she's made of users here on this forum.. but that laptop doesn't seem too bad though I'm not familiar with that brand.

My HP is pretty fantastic but I've felt like upgrading soon myself so I can get back into acouple PC games that this laptop couldn't normally handle.
