You made mistakes. Humans do that. But you can't just sit around and cry about this. You HAVE to get up and move on to make your life better. Trust me; when she sees you've moved on and you're more confident in yourself, she will come back to you if it's meant to be. For now you need to take a break and fly solo. For all you know, you might meet someone better tomorrow or the next day. And don't say "I doubt it" because if you don't believe in yourself, then nothing will ever happen in your life and you'll just be miserable. I've been there & done that. Hell, I was with my ex for 9 years, 3 of them married, before i ended up getting a divorce and moving on. It was tough but I met the girl of my dreams and wouldn't look back for anything now.

One time it was a topic called "Welcome to GTAF?" that I made - now it's GTA V, it once was General Chat.

 

Maybe you're right, though, about it being random.

The way this works is really complicated, but in the shortest way I can tell you is basically GTAForums.com is an exact match domain, so when you search for "gta forums", it has a priority. It's not as important as it used to be (supposedly), but it is still a strong part of ranking.

 

Now, the next biggest piece worth mentioning is traffic/activity/sharing of posts on other domains/links from here to relevant pages.

 

Freshness is also a factor, as is frequency of updates to the page (replies, in the case of the forum).

 

Since the top-level domain gets "points" for each and every page view on this site and each link into the site from other sites, it is always stronger than anything else.

 

But, since that only covers the top result, the rest are sorted and sifted under it, in basically the same way, just obviously with lesser points per given page, when each given page gives points to the top level.

 

So, basically, the adsense (and possibly google analytics, which I assume the forum uses, but even if it doesn't, adsense tells google basically the same info, it's just that while adsense and analytics both tell google about your site, using analytics yourself is the way to tell you about your site, not just google)

 

Sorry, restart that last sentance: So, adsense and analytics learn what is very popular, what is being seen often by many different IP's, what is being shared on other sites (people linking to noteworthy threads here, from other sites) and what sites lead in.

 

Whenever someone links to Newswire, it tells google that this site is relevant to rockstar games. Whenever someone links to here about a thread they are sharing on their blog, if their blog is about video games and gta, it adds points that GTAF is about that as well.

 

It's easy to get out of hand explaining this stuff. But it's basicially a link and traffic based popularity contest for search rankings, one that is meant to be natural/organic and not for people to work for (when people work for it, it's called SEO, which in an ideal world doesn't exist, because traffic+backlinks+relevant outward links is all it should take to rank for your stuff, but in competitive markets, this can be a necessity)

 

So, while there is usually some randomness injected into the actual results for a given query (especially more unique queries using search flags) to try to give you what you're looking for, for the most part, it is all actually indexed under thousands and thousands of rules like the couple main ones I mentioned throughout this post.

 

So, when you see those sub results and second, third, and fourth "real" results changing for the query "GTA forums", you can assume that those new pages are the most active, most linked, linking to the most relevant places outside of themselves, and getting the most traffic with or without posting activity from the visitors. And what keeps GTAF top level at the top, is that they are all pages under it, feeding it.

 

It is a lot more complicated than this, but as a person who sometimes relies on this information, I can tell you, this is all even I really need to know, and for the most part, aside from curiosity/self entertainment, there is no need for even me to know more, more is for the people who want to improve the search engines, search engineers need more info than this, the rest of us either can be happy with this much info (quite enlightening already), or in my case, this is more than enough to know to make a site rank for example.

 

It is important to add that every query will be different. This is JUST the "GTA forums" query, you can modify that in any way and get a whole different set of results, but they'll all also be following these main rules, just for a given query, different from the last. There are a lot of things that can change rankings, these are just the main ones that count when you get to a volume or level like GTAF is at. Still, if you change it to "gta forums easter eggs", that #1 result is likely to be a thread, not GTAF top level domain, because your query is more specific, and now it is weighing the results against that query, and needs to find more than just the most relevant page for GTA Forums, it also needs to find the most relevant page for GTA Forums and Easter Eggs at the same time.

You can become a forum leader (which is like a small moderator) by contributing a lot to one subforum or the forum in general, but only if the staff need help. From then on you can become a global moderator if you do a good job.

 

To become an admin you would have to be a quite exceptional member I think; you could only become one if the owners are looking for help and it would take you years to get there.

 

If you made a sizable donation to the network on the other hand, who knows. Maybe.
