I don't know about all the different scales used in music across the world but I was wondering what is the maximum number of frequencies that the human ear can distinguish? In other words, if we were at some point in the future to introduce more notes into music, how many of them could there be in total?

"The human ear can hear frequencies ranging from about 20 cps. to about 20,000 cps (although an individual might have a considerably smaller range)." Hamlin, Peter. Basic Acoustics for Electronic Musicians. St. Olaf College. January 1994, January 1997, January 1999.

That's not the right answer to my question. I know about that range and the human ear can't distinguish between a lot of those frequencies.

Even if you added more notes, not everyone would be able to hear them.

That would be cool to have music that only people with really sensitive hearing could enjoy/understand.

I know people with sensitive hearing can distinguish very easily between pitches and some people can hear beyond the boundaries of that range, but are the currently existing scales using up all the frequencies that the average person can distinguish between? We don't really use the very low and high frequencies in music so those are negligible. I'm more interested in the stuff between, that's more audible or at least not painful (acute notes) to hear.

Get a speaker and one of those box things and test it for yourself, I've done it before.

Natural scale can have any number of notes, but nobody uses natural scale anymore. Well tempered scale allows for 12 notes, and that is it. On an octave, the cycle necessarily repeats. It is possible to divide the octave range into more notes, but next one falls on 80-something notes. That puts notes within few cents of each other, and the range of tuning of instruments is often broader than that.

So you're stuck with twelve.

As far as number of octaves, a piano has a little over 7. That's pretty close to the maximum. You might be able to get distinguishable sounds up to somewhere between eight and nine octaves. By then, you start approaching boundaries of that 20Hz - 20kHz range, and you cannot really distinguish notes anymore.

So technology doesn't really do much. Piano covers almost everything you'd ever want to use in music.

Edit: Seems I remembered incorrectly. Took me a few minutes to write up the code to check. There is a good choice at 34 notes, and the next one is at 75 notes.

34 notes is a viable option, it seems.

Hey guys,

My question should pretty much belong in the Tech and PC chat but anyways. I have had GTA SAMP installed for a while on my computer. But I always lagg even if I am on a server with about 5 people. I need to put my view top down pretty much to not lag and it's really bugging me. I don't lagg in buildings though, just only on the streets. Any suggestions?

I'm running on Windows XP 1.99GB of RAM. I haven't really looked into getting a new computer because I've been trying everything to fix it. Resolution, FPS and so on.

Why is FireFox lagging for me? i checked for updates for it but it's all updated and i only have FF open and nothing else so i can't work it out or is FF just slow?

Check your extensions/addons for your browser. Delete unnecessary ones.

If that doesn't do it, re-install it.

That's better smile.gif

Thank you mate icon14.gif

Try the following (if you haven't already)

1) Update Windows

2) Update Drivers (especially Graphics)

3) Update virus definitions and then run Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware scans etc

4) Disk Cleanup

5) Make sure game is up to date (probably already is)

5a) Optional: Run CCleaner, run CHKDSK.

6) Run a defrag

This should make you machine a little more speedy, however if you are still getting lag then it might not be down to the specs of your computer as your internet connection might not be well oiled. You could have fast connection but low latency and ping, unfortunately there might not be much you can do except maybe try switching ISP's however that might not be the best answer as the issue might be with the line itself and the not the providers throttling of the line.

What opposite side of the Earth, if the Moon hit the earth at the typical speed of an asteroid then both bodies explode into several billion, billion, billion (Prof Brian Cox reference wink.gif ) pieces and most likely in a few years look like the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Eventually it may reform into something resembling a planet or rocky celestial body, but it would probably never harbor life again.

President of the United States is the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Military. That means he's effectively in charge of every single military operation.

Not that Area 51 holds anything secret anymore. Too many people know about it and are nosing around to keep anything actually critical there. All of the projects that used to be conducted there have been moved to alternative locations long time ago.

That's total bullsh*t. The gravitational binding energy of Earth is much greater than kinetic energy of Moon at asteroid impact velocity. Furthermore, the very formation of the Moon is result of giant impact, which was collision with Mars-sized body at similar velocities.

Collision with Moon-sized body would certainly knock out a lot of debris from the planet, but it wouldn't break it up completely. It would also liquefy the surface and sterilize the planet, of course, but it will be habitable again after a billion years or so.

Edit: Damn. Sorry about a double-post.

Sorry Sheldon blush.gif

But my loosely made point still stands, we'll all be completely dead so who gives a crap. And even by the time it could become habitable again, I wouldn't even want to begin to calculate the chance of a life form such as ourselves from forming again, by that time the sun would probably be knocking at the door wanting some of our Earth Cookies, so...

Earth's been around for over four billion years. With life, for past three. And we still have five billion years left until the Sun goes red giant. So yeah, there's more than enough time for a completely new cycle of life, potentially, with sentient creatures as a result. Hell, it could be the same life all over again, since most asteroids knocked out of Earth will come right back down to Earth, and there are life forms that can survive the trip.

Don't just make stuff up. I'm sure lzw3 is capable of that no worse than you are. If he's asking a question, that means he wants more than your guess on something you don't have the first clue about.

Just checking, and I stress I'm just checking here, would you take into consideration the axis of the newly formed/reconfigured planet resting somewhere near the 23.4deg (+/-) angle it is currently at to allow for seasonal changes, also the orbit of the planet may or may not be slightly out of sync with it's current path due to such a collision. And also would you allow for an orbiting satellite similar to the moon to allow for the rapid formation of life forms, like as detailed in the hypothesis of Richard Lathe at Pieta Research in Edinburgh, in regards to rapid tidal changes (when the planet maybe gains a water content) and it's subsequent effect on the DNA on life forms due to salinity changes.

But I do apologise, next time a question like this comes up, I'll just say the following (Since I don't have access to a supercomputer to generate an accurate model):

It will bounce off and leave a big dint and then the Earth will look like the Death Star... 'Pew, Pew... Pew, Pew... you Rebel scum'

I'm seeing double, well not quite but let me explain. This effect is visible when I look at a digital clock and there is a second image of the numbers on top of the actual numbers, it's pretty much transparent and a little above. I noticed this effect earlier today when I was watching a YouTube video that had a dark background. I noticed that the seek bar was double, a ghost like bar was on top of the real one. At first I thought it was a browser glitch but then I realized if I put my finger there the bar appears on my finger.

The strange thing is that I have experienced this for a long time now and haven't realized it until now. Why is my vision like that?
