But like I said, unfiltered smoke from the water is worse than cigarette smoke... so if you compare the same unit of smoke from a Hookah and a cigarette, with the hookah being essentially unfiltered, the hookah will cause much more harm to your health.

In a cigarette, the tobacco mixed with whole bunch of really nasty chemicals is burnt, producing incredibly toxic tar that you inhale, and the filter does roughly zip.

In a hookah, shisha made, usually, from just the tobacco and some flavor additions, is heated indirectly by the hot air passing through the coals. Even unfiltered, this stuff is much less toxic and contains far fewer cancerogens than cigarette smoke. But water in the hookah does provide actual filtration that is much better than cigarette filters do. So you win twice there.

What water in hookah doesn't filter out at all is carbon monoxide, which constitutes the bulk of short-term damage done by hookah use. There is also some ash that gets through, not all of which gets filtered out. That's the bulk of cancerogenic impact.

In equal amounts of smoke, however, there is no question that hookah smoke contains far less stuff that's bad for you than cigarette smoke does.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

Source= A WHO report Look at page 5...

A typical 1-hour smoking session involves inhaling 100-200 times the volume of smoke inhaled with a single cigarette.

Volume of smoke is not the same as equivalence.

But like I said, unfiltered smoke from the water is worse than cigarette smoke... so if you compare the same unit of smoke from a Hookah and a cigarette, with the hookah being essentially unfiltered, the hookah will cause much more harm to your health.

Is it? The report you sourced didn't say that.

Q: Is there a way to access youtube as it has been blocked in my country. I used the https proxy before but now its blocked too.

This is just a very brief guess that most likely won't work, and I haven't done it myself, but you could try PS3Youtube. I'm not sure how it would look on PC, or if it would even work, but still, it's worth a shot.

I have a question about shortening words, this kind of shortening "A.B.C.D.". I have noticed that in some cases they don't put the dot after the last letter, so it's "A.B.C.D". Is there a rule for that? Why wouldn't they put a dot after the last letter? Because that letter stands for a word as well, so it should have a dot like the others after it.

I have a serious question today, i need suicide help.

This girl i know had a break-up with her boyfriend a few months back and her parents caught her having a party and got really mad at her, she said her life has been going downhill lately and how she doesn't care anymore.

She's a pretty young girl, relatively smart, doesn't really get picked on or anything like that and she still has a good social life, i see her every few weekends. She's two and a bit years younger than me so she's still in that age where emotions tend to run high, anyway over facebook she's told me after talking to her for a while about a few things i found out that she's suicidal, i don't how serious she is but better not to take these things as a joke, and she says she doesn't want to be suicidal, but that's just how it is

What can i say? I already said to her right after she admitted her suicidal thoughts "Listen, you'll come through it okay in the end, maybe it doesn't seem like it now, but one day you can look back and realise you made the right choice"

That's all i really have at the moment because she's on chat and FB tells people when i have seen the messages so i had to reply, any advice? I am friends with her, but not really close friends, we have sort of gotten to know each other better recently, i don't really want to tell her parents either because it seems like a violation of trust.

What should i do? Tell her to get help? Talk to her parents? I've never had someone that seemed serious about it and opened up to me before.

Please don't tell me to tell her to harden up, even if that's what she needs to do saying that isn't going to help at all.

It's likely because the dots are used to seperate the letters, rather than just having the dots after the letters.

In general punctuation of initials isn't required at all, but if it is used, each letter, including the last, should be followed by a full stop/period.

But then there are shortened words that don't have dots between the individual letters, like "AIDS", "USA" etc.

@something_else That's what I thought. It just looks wrong otherwise.

In this video, Vader's voice is replaced with Sam Jackson's. What softwares and/or video formats are required to remove the movie's dialog track completely, while leaving all other sounds and music intact? And what are the steps?

Might explaing use or lack of 'periods'

I read that before I asked the question and it didn't help at all. That's why I asked here.

'Periods' or Full Stops were common place when using abbreviations for example I.B.M. this was more prevalent before the computer age, slowly the stops got phased out as we started using computers more and more. There are two trains of thought for this, the first is that the stop was disruptive to the old 8.3 naming convention for computer files so a file name like I.B.M..TXT wouldn't be a legal file name, the second is that putting a stop in between each letter slowed down the dictation, typing and note taking process so taking the stops out and capitalizing the letters started to become the norm.

However there is train of thought that the abbreviation full stop process should come back, due to idiots not realizing THAT THEY'VE GOT THEIR CAPS LOCK ON AND DON'T TURN IT OFF CAUSE THEY ARE STUPID OR DON'T KNOW HOW TO WORK A COMPUTER. So that preceding sentence should actually be one gigantic abbreviation for something, and with so many things being abbreviated now that even look like regular words (when in my opinion they shouldn't be) or phrases are abbreviated and just look plain stupid for example YOLO (I mean f*ck off with this YOLO sh*t) these abbreviations can get lost within transcriptions, translations or aren't even understood because those who have come up with it are doing so to make themselves look subversive and counter-culture... @Gareth Croke Thanks, but I was more curious why some people don't put a dot after the last letter.

Example:

But wait...those don't seem to be full stops. However, I did see other abbreviations without the full stop after the last letter.

There may be a technical reason, but I think many people do it by style preference. I personaly think it looks retarded with a period after the last letter in an abbriviation, it looks much neater without it. Depending on the context it can be confusing. I prefer abbreviations that have no periods altogether though.

no it is just that the last full stop is very dark in colour joking

some people use it some people don't I see it as a similar thing with the u in colour, UK uses the 'u', the USA does not, similar kinda thing except not a case of which country you come from I think.

Generally I write it without any periods at all: SWAT

But if I were to use periods I would have to put one at the end: S.W.A.T.

Have you ever noticed that there is a lot of static in your head, like when you go to sleep and everything is quiet, you can hear a lot of noise which kinda sounds like hundreds maybe thousands of clocks ticking randomly. I wonder where all that noise comes from?!

Multiple sources, from blood flowing in your ears to the actual misfires in the nerve endings in the cochlea. It's always there, but normally, your brain filters it out. When you are tired, or if you've been bombarded with a lot of loud noise earlier, it tends not to filter out these things as well. Also, any inflammation can amplify the effect, hence ringing ears if you have ear infection.

It is indeed as Nate pointed out Maggie Bell, also the creator of one of the bet crime series theme tunes.

My Question about helping someone suicidal remains, but Google helped me a bit after some searching, i would like more opinions, but whatever.

Legal Question

Could a pharmaceutical company legally create some sort of medicine - let's say a cure for cancer as an example - and withhold it even if they have found that it is 100% effective?

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but this one isn't to do with the government and it seems like a plausible thing for companies to do in the interest of money.

as for the suicide thing:

I have been on both sides of a similar situation, your side (seeing a friend spiraling) and the girl's side (being the one that spiraled)

What helped her, and me, was knowing someone was there for them, that someone understood (to an extent), knowing that someone else cared, that other people cared.

So my general laxidasical advice - be there as a friend, not too disimilar to how you are currently going about it. Words (like what you did thus far) can help but can also seem hollow (depends on the context, medium and the people involved), mix words with actions.

It could however be different for her, but being in this situation before that's all I can give, sorry I can't be more help here but it is a difficult situation, for both parties.

Yeah, they can absolutely do that, and for a good reason. Research costs a lot of money. Selling medicine for well over what it costs to manufacture it is the only way pharma can cover these costs. I'm not saying pharmaceutical companies never get greedy. They certainly do, but if every company is required to open up their patents for any medicine that saves lives so that it can be sold at generic prices right from the start, these companies simply won't be trying to develop cure that saves lives. At generic prices, they simply won't be able to cover research costs, and it would be a net loss to them.

So the bottom line is, if you let companies sit on a patent and sell drugs at inflated prices, some people who could be saved by the drug will die. If you don't, drug doesn't get developed, and they all die.

You might be worried that a company will sit on a patent without selling the drug at all, trying to make more sales from less-efficient drugs over longer term. I'm not sure how legal that is, but there is no reason to do that either way. If a company patents a drug, they have limited time in which they can sell it exclusively. Because of how long all the testing takes, the window for sales is narrow. 5-10 years at the most. If the company doesn't make money to cover research costs in that time, it's a net loss. So if the company doesn't think they can profit from selling a better version of the drug, they won't develop a better version of the drug.

There are exceptions, of course. What if you develop a better drug and patent it because you think competition might figure something out and release a better drug first, killing all your sales. Then it might be worth the cost of development to make a better drug and sit on the patent until it is needed. But in that situation you are still assuming that cure isn't unique, that several companies are working on it, and then at the very worst you get a minor delay. It might sound like even a delay is bad, but keep in mind that the likely alternative is cure not being made at all.

Certainly, it is not in the interest of the Medical Community to Cure anything.

The money to be made is in Research, and treating Symptoms.

Salk and Fluoride are the big fiascos that taught the Scientists that curing doesn't make money.

Look at all the 'workers' who lost employment because of these cures.

Leg Braces, Crutches, Wheel Chairs, Iron Lungs, Hospital services, Dentist and Assistant's income, et cetera; all down the drain because the services are no longer needed.

Look at all the advertisements for 'Cancer' related 'gimme your money' treatments for research, comfort and charities, that’s one pile of money. Only a fool would find a Cure and release it for that Ca$h Cow.

There may be a rogue ‘Scientist/Researcher’ but I’m sure that his colleagues and bosses would rein him/her in, or otherwise eliminate the threat.
