@Nathan those are some pretty sh*t viruses compared to ones that leave keyloggers and fake security then wreck the mbr so you can't boot and so on.

Or the old Russian Roulette one that basically had a 2 in 3 chance of wiping your hard drive. Or the new-fangled BIOS ones that basically turn your entire system into an expensive paperweight. Or some of the SCADA control system worms which have the capacity to shut down nuclear power plants, overload electrical generators and release poisonous materials into your water supply. Yeah, some far-fetched gay porn announcement seems kind of insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

That might not be the exact name, as I read about it many, many years ago, I think when I was just starting secondary school. Basically, it gave the user three numbers- one of which would wipe the hard drive completely, one of which would wipe the hard drive and leave them with an offensive message, and the other which would do nothing. Then via a random number generator, one was selected and that action carried out. Though the closest thing I can get to it is this, which overwrites your CMOS settings with random data based on the current date. Both sound pretty nasty.

How does a game know when it has been pirated?

Games like

crash at a certain point.

So how does a game actually know when it has been pirated? It seems difficult since last time i checked pirated means copying all the files onto a illegal disk.

NOTE: I do NOT own any pirated games, I am interested to see how they know when it has been illegally copied.

Not sure if this should be discussed, technically I'm just explaining it so it should be within the rules.

.. It's because the program files can detect where the original file came from, and whether or not it's been registered with a legit product key etc. Most pirated games are "cracked", which means the person who distibuted the illegal games has tampered with the install files so that it doesn't ask for a registration or product key, it basically gets tricked into thinking the files are still on the owners PC. It's quite a complicated thing and coding is involved, and of course there's lots of risks, not just illegal but for your system as well. If a game hasn't been cracked then the installer will detect that the files are on another PC.

And I'm also not involved with pirating. And would never recommend you get involved with it.

hope this isn't against the rules

And I'm also not involved with pirating. But it seems your trying to cover up the fact that you actually are.

That is so stupid.

I pirate games, bring it on.

Why is it stupid? Discussing pirating and warez is against the forum rules, so I stated that it seemed he was trying to hide the fact that he did it, you, on the other hand just come right out and say it. That, my friend, is stupid.

Sorry, I meant it's stupid to ask about pirated games (claim you don't pirate them) and cover up the fact you do. I know the rules man. If you pirate games, be a man and say it. After all, this is a internet forum.

Usually it's a disk check. With roms, there can also be environment checks. The reason these things don't always just stop the game is because then the person writing the crack can easily find and remove that stop. Adding random crashes prevents simple workarounds.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

Nah man, I am just interested in how they find out. Seems odd how a game from 1980 knows when it has been pirated and games from today don't even know.

I have searched youtube for "Call Of Duty Anti-Piracy" and no results related to that came up.

One more question but i still have a copy of Spyro 3 for the PS1 so i downloaded a emulator and it said "This may be an illegal copy" But I bought it 5 years ago, preowned from a games store and it never said that on my PS2, so anyone know why it is saying a Legal copy is "modified and illegal?"

763 MPH (1228 KPH) by the Thrust SSC, which drove at that speed in 1995. I think they're working on a new attempt from the same team called the Bloodhound.

I think there might be faster records, but not on wheels rather on rocket sleds attached to tracks. They're somewhere around Mach 8 (6,000 MPH+) but I don't think they're classed as the record in the same way wheeled vehicles are. Also they were unnamed for pretty obvious reasons.

Odd. I've tried using my Visa card to pay for something at a shop today. The machine wouldn't accept my card.

I went to a cashpoint and I couldn't withdraw anything over about £30. My card was still accepted in the cashpoint, I received no error messages and I still had the same ammount of money in my account. This evening, I attempted to purchase a DVD via Amazon and am now being told that they're having a hard time processing my card.

Any idea what's going on? If there was a real problem, wouldn't the cash machines keep my card? How can I take out small ammounts of cash yet be denied - at every machine I used - more ammounts of cash?

And why won't it work in the shops? This is the first problem I've had with my card and I'm utterly flummoxed.

Have you tried contacting your bank? That would be my first reaction.

It's a bank holiday. And this bullsh*t has just started happening today. The rest of the week? No problems whatsoever. But today it's acting up. On the one day I can't contact the bank at all.

Jesus... that would be quite a thrill, but I'd be scared to fall off the board at 130 km/h. You'd be banged up pretty good if you didn't die.

He was wearing full motorcycle leathers and a full-face helmet and stuff, but even then, still very dangerous.

I've stepped off close to 40 mp/h and it was quite the harrowing experience, but I didn't take too much damage since it was a controlled fall rather than a bail.

I've bailed at lower (but still fast enough) speeds and f*cked myself up pretty good, luckily I was wearing some safety equipment, otherwise it would have been waaaaaay worse.

It's amazing. In an Oh-God-I'm-ashamed-to-share-a-city-with-these-people kind of way. They're currently showing a special few episodes where they send them to Magaluf to be dicks in a foreign country. They filmed it the week after I was there, was well gutted.

Not that I believe in ghosts, but why are some ghosts seen with clothing on? Wouldn't that mean the clothing would had to have had a matching soul with the dead person/ghost.
