Have A Question? V2

In light of the news that December's GI cover will be of GTA V... I have a question.

On my October Issue of GI, there's an EXPIRATION NOTICE sticker on the front. My question is, will it expire after the November Issue, or the December Issue?

Anyone have an answer?

Do you mean you've got a subscription or something, or is your magazine going to go off and turn green and moldy.

If it's a subscription then they are usually 12 months, so when did you start your subscription, so you can do the maths.

lol, well I was going to count all the GI's I've received from my last subscription... but I can't find them all.

I'll just buy the December issue at GameStop when it's released. tounge.gif

Just wait and somebody out there will upload it to the forums, for free. icon14.gif

All of the magazines I've had would label the next to the last issue with "Time to Renew, you only have One more issue." And, I usually get a postal card in the mail saying the same. Some publishers start warnings three months before with count downs, "You only have ## issues left."

Has anyone ever bought anything from this site before?

It seems a bit too "cheap" to be legitimate. I can't see why it wouldn't be, but the amount you could save if you bought every bit of clothing from here would soon add up.

Is there a mod that turns the WHOLE Liberty City solid? I mean, is there a mod that allows me to walk around all the Liberty City without falling? (in GTA San Andreas)

I searched and downloaded many similar mods, but we can't free-roam in all LC with those mods, the textures are in the same way R* left.

Give me the link, please, if the mod exists.

Search on your preferred search engine: GTA United.

I have, indeed. In fact, I bought my last pair of shoes from there. Perfectly safe and legitimate. SportsDirect.com is also pretty good for low prices but great clothing, although as it's name suggests it's mainly for sports stuff, but they do offer plenty of other choices. I bought a pair of Vans from there a few months ago for £20.

I am really rubbish at this. I compose music in a DAW and I have pretty much no music theory knowledge so I improvise everything by laying down a chord progression usually by setting up a bassline and I play the melodies live and try to put them down\reproduce them in the sequencer.

My question is, if I only use the white keys (because if I use the black ones as well I can't seem to be able to improvise without going off-tune, especially when the composition is reasonably complex) am I writing music in the same key all the time?

It's a catalogue company so it's going to have cheap items. Have used it a number of times and have not had any problems with delivery or items.

Sort of. White keys belong to C major and A (natural) minor keys. However, using only the white keys limits you further than merely locking you into a specific key.

Specifically, the subdominant and dominant of C are F and G respectively. So you get C, F, and G chords of the C major key. Similarly, you have A, D, and E from the A as your tonic. Since it's the natural minor, you have Am, Dm, and Em chords. All six of these chords are played with white keys only, and either set of 3 chords will cover all the notes used in a key. That's basically what defines a key. The C and natural Am keys are identical in terms of notes, differing only in how they are arranged into chords. In fact, to ever major key corresponds a natural minor key that uses all the same notes.

However, usually, when people play in A minor, they play in harmonic minor which replaces Em with E chord. It sounds better. So you pick up a black key that way. That's one of the limitations I mentioned above. So in practice, whether you are playing G or G# will depend on which chord it belongs with. If you are playing one of the major key chords, you go with G. If it's meant to be played with E chord from the minor key, you go for G#. That subtle change can make the piece sound a lot better.

Ideally, you should learn some basics of music theory. If you can write in one key, you can always transpose it to any other. Circle of fifths (look it up) is an extremely powerful concept for that. If you get a good feel for the circle of fifths, you'll know exactly how many and which black keys to use with any particular key. Of course, like I said, there are exceptions. It doesn't even always have to follow the exact chords that are being played, but that is usually a good rule of thumb. If you threw in a diminished chord, one of the notes will generally be flattened in your melody as well and so on. So if you can figure out which chords sound well together as a sequence, you should have a good sense of which notes you'll be using as well.

It helps if you have an instrument you can play. An acoustic guitar or piano/keyboard are good for getting a feel for these things. Piano/keyboard is probably better for composing in general.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

Yeah, thanks. I am planning on learning music theory and I'll have to buy a keyboard as well (it's a bit annoying having to play on a PC keyboard).

Yeah, and if you aren't interested in actually playing it as an instrument, you can get a midi keyboard really cheap. You probably still want to get something with touch sensitivity, but make sure it can be turned on and off or that you can instruct your composing software to ignore it.

Does anyone know what that tube thing is that some singers have next to their mic? They often have the tube in their mouths and when they move it around it makes a sort of "wah-wah" sound. I'm sure I've seen David Gilmour use it. Also, how does it work?

Edit: I found the video. Skip to the five minute mark.

It is a Vocoder, it's a technical bit of kit to describe how it actually works, but that Wiki page does a good job

I think you're referring to a Talk box.

I believe it's a talk box, it blows air into your mouth and you change the noise and pitch by lip syncing or changing your mouth shape. further info here

I thought that was how it worked. Cheers for the answers, guys. Much appreciated icon14.gif

@ Gareth: It seems that the Talk Box is usually used with a guitar, whereas the Vocoder is used without. Still, it was interesting to learn about the origins of this tech so cheers for linking that.

@GreatGig23- Now that you're interested in Vocoders and all, you're not going to go Cher on us, now are you.

What car is better in your opinion, the Valiant or the Valiant Charger; I'm thinking of buying one of them. I believe the Charger is a V8, meaning, costs more to run. What are the differences between the two?

Becasue you're Australian I assume you mean the Chrysler Valiant and not Plymouth's, right?

EDIT: Nevermind, Plymouth didn't have a Charger variant of the Valiant. blush.gif

Correct. Probably around a 70's model; maybe a VG series.

What's the difference between the Charger and Pacer?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't there private forums for the official gangs like Leone Family Mafia or Zaibatsu?

My question is, are there different sections or sub-forums for each gang, one for Zaibatsu and one for AMF for example?

If Yes, can a member from Zaibatsu for example, check another gang's section/sub-forum? Or is it all in one sub-forum called the "official gangs" for example?

Too many questions i know, but i'm kinda carious.

The Zaibastu's Topic is actually in the gang forum but invisible to members outside it (like us) For example you click on the zaibastu link in miromiro's signature and it says you do not have permission to view this topic smile.gif

There's the OGA forum, where anyone in an official group can post. Then there are individual forums for each gang. You can only see your relevant forum. Mods can see all of them, but tend to respect the privacy and not comment on what's going on between forums (as far as I know).

No, Zaibatsu have their own forum section that no-one else can see (all gangs have their own but cant see eachother's), and then there is one main OGA section.

I think I'll get a MIDI keyboard before anything else, I want save money to buy a synthesizer first that I've been meaning to buy for years (it doesn't have keys; it's not a keyboard kind of synth).

I have another question: how come some characters aren't allowed in file names (well, at least on Windows)? Characters such as: :, *, <, > etc.

Sort of. There are a selection of special characters / \ | : * ? " < > which aren't allowed to be used in file names because they have special meanings in the command interpreter or in the operating system kernel. I'm entirely unsure how much of that is actually still in operation, and how much is a legacy from the old 8.3 Filename formatting.

QUESTION

Of all the fan-sites dedicated to any single game series, is GTANET the most popular one?

Right, before I go on to ask my question, I ask that you treat me like a complete moron on the subject as I really don't know that much.

Basically, I'm thinking of growing out my hair. Right now it's probably around half an inch in length. So, my questions are:

1) I've read up some stuff about the "awkward phase" yet nothing really seems to help. How can I go about looking relatively presentable in work? I have quite thick hair which likes to lean toward the Beatles bowl cut. I'd like to avoid that part. Also, styling with gel and stuff isn't really going to work. I have no patience for that crap.

2) Do I have to "train" my hair into a style? Basically, I'd want to go for one of these (posted below) kind of styles so I'd like to know what I have to do to get it to go that way.

Many thanks in advance.

I'll hand in my Man-Card on the way out.

A couple of my mates grew out their hair a few years ago. They definitely went through the "awkward phase". The only thing I can recommend, as per the one lad who didn't look too bad while growing it out, is going to the barbers quite often and getting it cut. Sounds counter intuitive, but he went to his barber every couple of weeks and got him to style it so it didn't look bad at its new length. Make sure you let the barber know what you're aiming for though, you don't want all your hard work getting lopped off thanks to a miscommunication.

As for "training" hair, I've got no idea. But I did start doing my hair differently (fringe slicked back and up slightly) about a year ago now and I've had it that way pretty much everyday with hair spray and/or some "sculpting clay" stuff. All I know is that even when I've got nothing in my hair now it sits pretty close to that style naturally. My thinking is that because I put it like that everyday, the new hair started to grow in a mold of sorts. But that's just conjecture.
