I don't see why women have to wear makeup when men don't. I think ultimately it's all down to being superficial.

It's largely because most societies are patriarchies. Men largely get judged by what they do rather simply what they are, whereas that's not always true for women.

don't peddle that old rubbish, its not original or clever and it doesn't make you seem smart and informed.

It's quite true, though. Traditionally, in most societies power and authority has been held by men. It takes more than a couple of generations of feminism to remove that ingrained sociological imprint. Ask 100 people to draw a picture of a politician, a company director or anyone in a position of authority and 99 of them will draw a man. It's certainly something that's begun to erode in the Western world, and doesn't exist in such an aesthetic way in other societies, but it's quite hard to argue convincingly doesn't exist at all. Still, it would have been nice of you to try rather than subjecting us all to your usual hostility and irksome inability to contribute anything worthwhile. But we can dream, I suppose.

Alright, let's say there are two soldiers. One male, one female. They both go to war in combat roles (we're already into the realms of fantasy, by the way (unless we're in Israel)) and by some massive, tragic coincidence are the victims of enemy gunfire and receive the exact same facial wound. Let's say they lost an eye and whatever else that entails. They both retire and try to go back to civilian life. If you can honestly tell me that you think the woman would face the exact same amount, and type, of difficulties in general life (socially, romantically, employment wise etc.) as the man, then I'll concede that we don't live in a patriarchy.

Kinda. Ornamental.

Same with high heels and long fingernails. The heels are there because women traditionally didn't need to do the same work as men. Manicured nails showed that you didn't use your hands for things that would damage them (ie: real work)

Makeup sweats off. If you wear makeup, it shows you're not working up a sweat.

High heels were, at first, to make a woman's feet look smaller than the 'gun boats' they are. However, since the early days the fashion 'toe' portion is now getting longer which makes their feet look bigger again.

Women being shorter have for centurys used lifts (platform) to seem taller. One example is Mae West, which explains the sort of 'waddle' when she shuffles around.

As noted, fingernail length is a sign of the Idle.

Anyone know any cheap train fare sites?

Me and my partner want to go from cardiff to alton towers (uttoxeter) to be exact and the cheapest i can find is £122 return which is ridiculous , but i will have to pay it if i cant find anything else.

By that logic, I should have long manicured nails. But that would get in the way of playing guitar and rock climbing. I don't think I'm prepared to give these up just to show off my high social status.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

There are practical uses for long fingernails, of course. What we're saying here is that these notions are antiquated. I'd like to see an 18th or 19th century woman or nobility have a go at rock climbing tounge.gif

Are all physical sounds made of sine waves? I say physical because you can create other wave forms on a computer for example, but I imagine they would come out the speakers as made of sine waves.

Where can I find subscription offers for broadsheet newspapers? For some reason I'm having difficulty finding legitimate information on costs online; I'm specifically looking at credible editions such as the Economist, Guardian, The Independent or the Times.

Here's the subscription page for the Guardian. But honestly, you're probably much better off just reading online for most papers. It's free (apart from The Times, but screw them), has more versatile content, better accuracy and more up to date (thanks to being able to edit/post without having to reprint), and you don't have to bin or recycle that sh*t.

Yh I just read them online too, well the Guardian is the only one I read. I have a flick through The Sun as well, seeing as my parents buy it. It's full of sh*t mostly, but still, it's not quite as bad as some people make it out to be as long as you just take it for what it is. Plus tits, and the sports section ain't too bad either.

Yeah, I think I will make a habit of checking them out online. I ask because of my Politics (and to some extent Economics) courses requiring a lot more in-depth analysis of world affairs relating to those subjects, and so we've been recommended to check them out (I think our tutor's giving us the password to an online subscription of the Economist, the others I'm interested in for personal use).

Thanks guys.

@ Darrel: Thetrainline.com is pretty good for finding cheap fares. If you can't find anything cheaper, I'd suggest going by coach. Sure, it takes longer, but you save a tonne. I'm going to London and back for £35.

Thanks bud. We booked a coach earlier this year to go for my gf,s birthday. They let us down completely. We were thinking on going with ticket line as they have a 2 day trip in october for scarefest, but they cannot guarantee it will definitely go .

Cant trust coaches these days.

Just to be pedantic- the Guardian isn't a broadsheet, it's a Berliner wink.gif.

Also, The Economist is a magazine, and a damn fine one too- I have a subscription myself.

The three UK "broadsheet" newspapers are:

The Financial Times

The Daily Telegraph

The Sunday Times

If you looking at subscriptions, might I suggest the Sunday Times? They almost always have some fantastic offers, but it might be best to speak to someone rather than applying online. When I subscribed I basically got free membership for a year to the Times Eat Out dining club, which constitutes some incredibly good offers (up to and including 50% off your bill) for a huge variety of excellent restaurants around the UK.

This is going to come off so f*cking embarrassing but what choice do I have? So I just shaved my pubes and found a really raised mole next to my penis that I've never seen before, and I don't think I had it as a child... do you guys think its anything to worry about?

If it worries you, go to a doctor to have it checked.

It's probably nothing to worry about though (or it's melanoma, in which case IT IS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT).

Well unless you had an absolute jungle of a pubic region down there, I have no idea how you missed it. Next to your penis as well? I know my pubic area like the back of my penis. Every mole, and every pore. I say every mole, I only have the one.

I honestly have no idea. It could be nothing, it could be cock cancer.

Search google for Moles ABCD's, there is a load of information about how to check your moles and the signs you should be looking for when it comes to moles. However the big CAVEAT to all this, is that this is a medical issue, if you are really concerned go and seek a professional medical opinion on it.

Here's a question..:

Is there any way I can watch old (ish) football matches from the Premier League? I know sites that I can watch live football matches on, but I don't know of anywhere I can watch football matches of previous EPL seasons. I know I could always find highlights of old games, but I'd rather watch a whole match if that's possible?

The matches can even be from last season...

Thanks guys... it just concerned me because it looks like its three moles that are combining if you get what I mean...

Get it checked out. It could be any number of things, most of which are absolutely nothing to worry about, and most of the rest go away with simple treatment. But it's not something you want to risk. Better be embarrassed about it for 15 minutes over nothing, than need complicated surgery and treatments later, however unlikely that is.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

It's as big as your balls? Or are your balls so small that they're as big as your mole. I don't know why, but 'if you know what I mean' in a conversation about dick moles has increased dirtiness.

Question: Anyone have a nice, simple list of IRC commands? Or a site that provides one? Google hasn't been really helpful because the site as are either (a)too complex, or (b)don't give enough information. Thanks in advance.
