What would happen if everyone in the world jumped at the same time?...

I watched a video about this about a month ago. The answer is: practically nothing.

I've always wanted to know this, how come if you attach a piece of string to two plastic cups and speak into one your voice comes out of the other ? Seriously how does that work.

Vibration.

If you hold the cups/string very tight, else it won't work.

Same as if you put your ear to a wall/door.

Can anybody know where I can do a very detailed Internet search? I have hardly nothing to go on about the person I'm looking for, but I all I know is his first name, around how old he can be and that he goes on vacation during week 34 of the year. I tried searching on Google the key words "[vacation resort name] [first name] [week 34] [facebook]" to see if he possibly has a Facebook profile. Is this not enough information to go on, or not? I have to know something about this guy that's very important, so the sooner the answer the better.

That's not enough to find him on.

If you knew where he lived you could try looking him up in the phonebook (assuming the population is small enough).

I assume that he can either live in Utah, Nevada or Arizona, so, if possible, I would have to scan very deeply throughout many, many phonebooks. Plus, he lives with his parents too, so his father's name would appear in the phonebook if I were to strike gold and find him.

Thanks for the reply though. I appreciate it. Any other suggestions?

You need a tool like Maltego. Open-source intelligence and forensic relationship mapping software. It's great for pulling things like phone numbers, email addresses, websites/DNS/FTP servers they own, social media links and just about anything else- I've used it quite extensively in threat assessment. There's a free-to-use trial version on there.

What is the difference between fatalism and determinism?

Fatalism is similar in saying

that, free will is an illusion, but also that the future is inevitable and stress a acceptance or submission a to fate. Determinism is that free will is an illusion

and all actions are predetermined by previous actions/experiences. In other words, determinist people believe in absolute causality, fatalists in a set course of events.

Isn't that the same thing?

Even so, you should at least credit the person you took it from.

I would have asked this in the Breaking Bad topic but I won't go in there just yet for the fear of stumbling across spoilers. Anyway, does anyone how much of the meth making process is based on fact? It seems a bit odd that they'd use actual techniques which would essentially be a kind of tutorial for others.

Determinism teaches that the decisions that individuals make are a product of various contributing factors, and are therefore not subject to complete free will.

Fatalism teaches that the future is already written by fate, and therefore cannot be altered.

Basically, determinism takes into account the will of the individual but concedes that these wills are shaped by environment, circumstance and genetics, meaning that true free thought is an illusion. Fatalism just claims that fate is responsible for everything. The former is quite intelligent as an idea, the latter quite stupid.

I read somewhere that they only give enough of the chemical names/processes to make it sound/look cool, but not enough to actually give anyone a meaningful recipe. It's supposedly based on the actual process though.

You can easily look it up on the internet if you know where to look. And the problem is getting the chemicals plus you need to have a place where you can make it with the right equipment.

That's kind of the problem with meth. It's very easy to make. Not of the clinical purity, of course, but nobody cares to make it very clean to sell on the streets. (Which is just one of many reasons not to go for meth.) The challenges in setting up a lab all have to do with getting a good supply of materials you need, a lot of which are flagged, setting up proper ventilation and waste disposal, and doing all of that in a way that does not attract attention. These are the things they won't give you too much information about on the show. Partly because it's all part of an ever evolving arms race. The basic knowledge of how to cook some up you can find in any organic chemistry book. Naturally, not as a straight up recipe, but rather as discussion on all of the processes involved.

I don't know a whole lot about the Japanese language, but I've always wondered how some video game/movie titles or products that are also available in the west have English-sounding names. The two examples right off the top of my head are Playstation (Pureisutēshon) and Dark Souls (Dāku Souru). Does this have something to do with marketing these products in the west or is the actual pronunciation that similar to the English one?

Yes. It's exploiting popularity of Western culture in Japan to market simultaneously in Japan and abroad. Souru does happen to be a borrowed word in Japanese meaning "soul", because traditional Japanese notion of the soul is a little different from the Western/Christian one. The rest, though, are just Japanese pronunciation of the corresponding English words. It's not actually Japanese.

Edit: As a rule of thumb, you can tell the difference between actual Japanese names or ones that are borrowed from English or another language by how they are spelled. Words that are Japanese are going to be written in Kanji and Hiragana. The former are complicated symbols that can mean an entire word. The second is an alphabet of syllables. Foreign words, however, are written in Katakana. It represents same syllables as Hiragana, but uses different symbols for them. Katakana is very distinctive, because it consists of a set of very simple symbols written with sharp corners and straight lines. Hiragana uses primarily smooth curves, instead. So "Dark Souls" is spelled ダーケソウル in Japanese. While Japanese for "Dark Souls" would be more like 黒霊. (Closer to "Dark Spirit", but I'm not sure if there is a better translation.)

I know this belongs in Gaming Chat but I didn't wanna bump an old topic or start a new one, but do you think that I should buy Borderlands through Steam and give it a play?

@ K^2 and zoo: Thanks for the answers, guys. Much appreciated icon14.gif

As for the question above, which I think is more than fine to ask in here, by the way, I think that if you've got the money and you want to play the game then go for it. I wonder as to why you ask though. Do you want to know if Borderlands is worth the money or whether or not Steam is any good? If it's the former, then I don't know, I haven't played it. If it's the latter, then yes, Steam is a pretty damn good service, in my opinion. If it's simply a case of "should I buy it or not?" then it's up to you really.

I've got the money and I use Steam for everything, I just wanted to know what people outside of magazines think of the game.

I keep telling myself that surely this cover art is, somewhere in the world (especially on the internet), being sold in the format of a poster, but I can't help but feel like I've exhausted all google searches related to its imagined existence.

Well, forgive me if this has been asked already, but this is my first post in this thread and I am not about to read all these pages. Also the search function sucks.

Anyway, my question is, why exactly was Slamman banned? Stumbled upon his profile to see that he was "Busted" and was just curious.

Why he was banned? The real question is, why he was unbanned? Slamman was just trolling in each topic he was posting, the amount of spam has just increased since he returned back last year. from what I've seen, he was posting in forums such as the Tech one, where I believe he was giving wrong information. Besides, Slamman pretty much annoyed everyone, not only by posting, but also PMing members when he was temp banned.

Just look at his warn log - it pretty much explains his expected ban.

To be honest, if you're able to get by using your wank bank, you're better for it.

Porn really f*cks with your head when you watch it too often. And it's tricky when you're single and there's no "help". If you quit using porn cold turkey you find that if you watch it say, 1-3 times per month, you - as the internet says - cum buckets.

I also find when I don't watch porn I have a lot more fun with someone else.
