Officer Tenpenny is a bad man
With LA noire they tested out whether having more than 1 disc is ok and i think they found out it is. So maybe with GTA 5 they'll do 3 hugly detailed islands on 3 discs and you have to go to the airport and buy a plane ticket to go to the next island? It is possible and could explain why their taking so long. Just a theory i came up with what do u think?
Original Light
Yea but switching is annoying if you rapidly keep switching islands.
DS 17
Only having the possibility to fly with pauses from one city / island to the other would suck. I haven't liked this features in Mafia II. In a GTA it would be more annoying than in Mafia, because you have more possibilities like Helis and hopefully planes. If the next GTA is too big for one disc, I would prefer a solution like they did in Vice City. So if you are leaving the city / island of one disc and you need the other disc you will see a loading screen that you have to change the discs. Then you can fly by yourself wherever you want. d0mm2k8
With LA noire they tested out whether having more than 1 disc is ok and i think they found out it is. The L.A. Noire city was on each disk. Most of the space is taken up by sounds and the facial animation technology, not the cities. I assume we're talking about Xbox since the other platforms don't have this problem? Well multiple disks is fine for a game such as GTA if you have the room to install on you hard drive. Come on guys, a new HDD isn't expensive now is it? HeNDo6750
Xbox 360 is a great console and everything but lacks the space on the disc with GTA like with GTA IV and i bet the lack of space on the disc problem would be the same with GTA V.
Mainland Marauder
Yea but switching is annoying if you rapidly keep switching islands. This. You can have a second disc for extra missions and cutscenes or whatever but you don't want to have to change discs just to get from one end of town to the other. The limitations come more from the limited RAM in the consoles rather than disc space. Really the storage medium is ahead of the hardware. mr. Anonymous
Yea but switching is annoying if you rapidly keep switching islands. That's why I think if there has to be multiple disks, most of the disks should be used for installing the data and one could be used for running the game itself, like a computer. darkfailure
I think the map should be fully accessible with one disc. Installing the game on the Xbox would be a possible solution - but not for everyone! The 4GB systems simply do not provide enough space. And switching discs rapidly because you are in the middle of an escape or something is really annoying. If the three islands are connected like the ones in IV (e.g. London, Hawaii and Tokyo), I wouldn't mind changing discs. I mean, in this case the game would be build for the play to stay on one island for a longer time. And each island would be way bigger than the ones in IV. But I don't see this happen. darrellmonks
3 discs on xbox or ps3? because 3 on the ps3 could be 5 or 6 on the xbox. Anyway i think its a good idea. Rockstar once said gta iv was made to last, it lasted all of a few months. SA lasted a 2 years for me when it came out. Hopefully gta v truely will be made "to last" imagine 3 discs, each disc has a city the size of the whole gta iv map, over 120 story missions and lots and lots and lots on features (taxi missions, bounty hunting, races etc...) HeNDo6750
Why cant they do what Forza 3 on xbox was with having one disk to have half the stuff and the other stuff on the 2nd disc or 3rd disc and then install them to the 1st disc. Mainland Marauder
Remember, if it's huge then it's going to take up a lot of space on your HD too. I recall reading about how, just to name an example, the discs for the Final Fantasy games for the original PlayStation each contained the meat and bones of the game, separately. The animated cutscenes and maybe some music were the only differences. While this works just fine for an RPG, a puzzle game like Myst or even a game like LA Noire, this dog won't hunt in GTA. darkplague
Great idea! cause then we can pay 3X the price for all that detail and extra discs!!! better idea...hows bout they just develop 3 seperate games? if im playing gta, i want to be able to relax and just free roam it and stuff...not have to get up and switch the disc every time i reach the end of a certain section of city. AndreaXCII
you wouldnt neccesarily need 1 disc per location depends what fits on what like locations on one then characters and characters customizations on another etc (i dont know im not sure how the multi-disc format works as far as what is on what disc) and if you needed to swap discs just to go to the next island they never would do that, they know how illogical that is
Sunrise Driver
Buy yourself a PC or Wii U/PS3 at least. X360 is too obsolete and dumbing games down.

One disk isnt going to cut it, one blue ray might not cut it, unless you want iv version 2. It amazes me when people say hard drive this and hard drive that, well if you dont have a big enough hard drive too bad, either get a bigger one or you dont play gta. We want a GTA new version not a water downed version of IV. Awesome point about 3 cities and three disks or whatever, too bad you have to switch disks, either have it installed some how to the hard drive and a disk for missions if not you dont play it. Remember when we thought the next gen we would get GTA usa haha, we are far from that because of the dvd.
darkplague
all it requires is a certain ammount of compression. besides, the music files are what take up most of the space. i'd be cool w/ less radio stations if it meant i didn't have to switch a disc...only for that reason... That's why R* would probably never do this idea for a console version. I'm against this idea though. Having to swap discs around everytime you changed islands would be rather annoying. Kwandilibro
No. I don't want to switch a disk just to move through the map. I thought audio files took up the bulk of the content anyway?
GR7
Wouldn't work with a game like GTA especially in multiplayer. I'm sure they will have to installation disks and a main disk for 360, sucks for the 4GB owners though.
GTA_getaway_driver
Could be beneficial for the gamer, instead of sitting on their @$$ doing nothing, they are getting exercise by switching disks.

mr_musica
It's like having three games... thinking trilogy-wise, GTA III was three islands on three different games so it would be the same stuff... What I don't know is if the blu-ray from IV (yes... I'm with the storage overlord PS3) is filled completely, because someone said that one blu-ray would be IV v2.0 I certainly don't think so. I'm sure they will have to installation disks and a main disk for 360, sucks for the 4GB owners though. No game on the 360 can require a hard drive to play. It is against Microsoft's rules. Forza Motorsport 3 had a second disc you could install, but it contained optional content. The only reason L.A. Noire took up 3 discs was because of the new MotionScan technology. It barely even fit on one Blu-Ray disc. The entire city was on all three discs though, and it was Rockstar's biggest city yet. It was also intricately detailed like GTA IV's Liberty City. And that HUGE detailed city easily fit on each disc alongside all of the other data. The DVD format is NOT holding GTA back.
Sunrise Driver
Yeah, and what about people who don't have the HDD capacity to do such a thing? Upgrade. Anyway, where's their famous HD DVD? It lose a movie battle but M$ could use it for X360. That's why R* would probably never do this idea for a console version. That's why X360 will hold the game back if R* will make for Xbawks again. I'm against this idea though. Having to swap discs around everytime you changed islands would be rather annoying. This or mandatory HDD install. Or dumb down physics, x4 worse graphics and sounds. Slamman
Just dual layer is not enough for the Xbox II's DVD-ROM, so old school, I'd pass this along to Wolf in PC chat to come up with something MODERN for God's Sake. This old tech will not pass muster. http://classicgames.about.com/od/history/t...-Games-Pt-5.htm Edited July 24, 2011 by Slamman
