possibility of a new concept

I was actually posting this in another thread, but then I realized it could as well serve as a topic on its own. If it doesnt, strike me down if you must....

 

I just had an idea! What if there are two GTAs currently in development? Before you start shaking your heads, bear with me here...

 

Let us just assume that the next gen consoles are to come out sometime late 2012 or early 2013, and that Rockstar aims to release their next major GTA (presumably GTAV) on those next gen platforms. R would have lots of time to finish their product, which it good, but at the same time they would keep GTA-hungry fans in the dark for an unhealthy amount of time, which perhaps could be bad for industry. So what would R have to do to keep the attention? Release another GTA before GTAV!!!

 

But this idea is nothing like you would expect it to be: I want this GTA to be a "spinoff", somewhere along the lines of chinatown wars, only it would be sold as downloadable content for all current concoles. The more realistic approach seen in GTAIV would be left behind for for a more arcade-based game, bringing GTA back to its roots. The graphics would be in 3d, yet mainly with an overhead-ish look. Graphics would be cell shaded, but would bear resemblance to GTA1, GTA2, GTA CWs graphichs. "KIIIIILL FRENCY!!!", "Elvis has left the building", making people into hot dogs, respectometres, ridiculous characters and gangs, electroguns, flamethrowers, jetpacks, guns rigged on cars, getting money for destruction, for running over pedestrians. All these things, unfit for the universe of current GTAs could easily be put into this game.

 

One more thing making this GTA unique would be the interactive part. Think along the lines of games like Little big planet, a GTA that makes you do anything. Create and share outfits, cars, gangs, missions, gameplay mechanics, perhaps even cities. The game would be online based allowing you to enter different servers, as well as inviting people into your own. Invite your friends into your game anytime, or just go solo. This would be deeply connected with the social club allowing you to share achievements, scores, videos and all the things I just mentioned.

 

Given that it will be sold only as downloadable content, R could release it any time, preventing it from having to compete with other major R titles like Agent and Max Pain, probably scheduled for release in March or October one year. Also it wouldnt have to be just a Rockstar North production. If I remember correctly Rockstar Leeds did most of the work on LCS and VCS.

 

The purpose of this new GTA game/concept would be to entertain us before and after the release of a next gen GTA. It would also bring back some of that classic GTA magic that simply wouldnt fit into GTA V.

 

So what do you guys say about this? Plausable? Ulikely? Bad idea? Good idea? Also feel free to come with suggestions for what you would want to be included in such a GTA concept

Here's the thing, I really don't see next gen consoles being released very soon, maybe at the soonest 2-3 years. Well we know they have not even finished production of these consoles yet, so how is R* supposed to be developing the game for them? And even when next gen consoles are released it takes another good 2-3 years before you start seeing real results, and getting potential out of games. I really think R* will be releasing V on current gen, then releasing GTA VI 3 years or so into the life cycle of the next gen.

 

So basically if R* did what you say we would get some game on "next gen" and have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for a console which isn't even taking it's first steps, and some cheap snack they knocked together to keep our appetite up. But really I'd still feel very hungry indeed, even after the main helping of next gen rubbish.

Although there are some good ideas in it your post like customization and sharing it will never happen that way. Look at Red Faction Battlegrounds XBLA / PSN title as a warming up title for Red Faction Armageddon. It sucked big time A next GTA on the consoles and pc should improve on the previous one. Meaning even more (tweaked) realistic looking graphics, physics, precize gameplay etc. The only platform where I could imagine a cell shaded arcady GTA is Nintendo 3DS. Even the PS Vita will never get a title like that because Sony wants to impress people of the raw graphic power of their next handheld. Maybe GTA on the PS Vita won't be as beautiful as the 360 or PS3 but sure will make a huge improvement on LCS and VCS graphics wise.

 

So, I do think Rockstar Games could be working on several GTA games at the same time. Obviously GTA V / Next for 360 / PS3 / PC. But also another one not specific for XBLA / PSN but for the PS Vita just like they did with LCS and later VCS for the PSP
