Yeah and all four, benefits and chavs, just sayin'.

lol. wannabe gangsta like init blad lol.

No but just search on google or something. And the stuff about stereotypical brits ent true (bad teeth, drinking tea , or love the queen , etc.).

Oh I know, I've got to the point now where every time I see a chav I feel there should be some sort of rehab for them, I mean what possesses you to tuck trackies into socks, wear your trousers by your knees, have a cap falling off your head and talk like your from the hood, when in fact they live in Cambridge.

Also for the record I am not a fan of the Queen, my teeth aren't bad, but I do love tea wink.gif

The video Menaced posted summed the whole thing up pretty well, and goes into much more detail than anybody here has, definitely watch that if you're still confused. That said, it doesn't really touch on governance, and makes us look a little bit like we're still under the thumb of the monarchy.

Playing football? I do it all the time when I'm playing but not wearing shorts. I don't know what motivates people to do it with normal (non-football) socks outside of playing the game though.

I have terrible teeth, I love the queen, but I hate tea. Another advantage of having the UK is we can compete at the olympics and not get our asses owned. Sure we still suck, but at least we can suck together, and in an undignified and loutish way.

I understand that, but surely having the crotch are of them by your knees slows you down?

I consider myself Scottish. At most, I am a British citizen. "Britishness" annoys me - not just because it is overbearingly English, but because I feel no particular affinity with other countries in the UK, especially England.

Just to interject here, there's sod-all "English" national identity left. Hell, our population are so deluded by the idea of national identity we don't even want an English parliamentary assembly.

The rest I can just chalk off as usual North versus South envy. wink.gif

Basically what everyone else said. Each country in the UK is more like a state. In Scotland we have our own Parliament although things like defense are still controlled by the UK Parliament - which runs not just England but all of britain.

Although each country is getting more powers, and there are even referrendums for Scotland becoming completely independant from the UK (which wont happen though). So in american terms, Westminister (UK Parliament) is the White House, and has full control. And all other countries are the states which have their own control over certain issues. If that makes sense... which reading it over it doesn't, but f*ck it.

I think I would consider myself british, but that is where the confusion comes. Because when talking about britain people think of England, which is just a country. So many people would say "Scottish not British" but I'm the opposite since everyone in the UK is british.

I don't consider myself British at all. I'm an Englishman. I as born here, raised here and care about my country a great deal. I consider being called 'British' mildly insulting. I would never call a Scotsman or a Welshman 'British'. They have their own history, their own culture. And no one has the right to try to rob them of their heritage. Which is what I see the 'United Kingdom' as doing.

It's a fundementally stupid idea.

I agree with this, the united kingdom is hardley united in spirit at all, The Northern Irish want to be a seperate nation and not part of the UK, wales and scotland I'm not sure but one question, why on passports or (I've heard it or seen it somewhere) it sais "The United kingdom and Northern Ireland".

But I thought NI was part of the UK no?

pretty moronic thing to say, especially when theres an northern irishman above you contradicting your statement . Its mainly just the catholics that want to separate , the protestants want to be a part of the uk.

And as for the UK robbing them of they're culture....jesus christ , these countries still exist , but they need funding from london to stay stable , the UK is just a name . They can still call themselves welsh or scottish , just because it says british on they're passport it doesn't change anything

It depends, Alot of Asian people who arn't of Chinese descent hate being called "Chinese" or some even hate being called "Asian" because they prefer being recognized as their ethnicity. I know it's not the same as the whole "British" scenario but alot of people don't like being "labelled" like that and get upset or annoyed by it.

It does change things, though. It means we've constantly got this bloated mutant 'union' shoved in our face when all we want is to be seperate. Seperate but equal. There's too much bitterness, too much jealousy.

I would rather enjoy Scotland as a friendly neighbour than a resentful brother. Just because they give us a hodgepodge flag, call us 'British' and wish for the best, it doesn't necessarily mean we're going to become British. It's an affront to our national dignity. Just like our membership in the European Union.

It's kinda funny all the divides in the UK, there's so much pointless tribalism. Scots don't like English, Welsh don't like English, northen English don't like southern English, mancs don't like scousers, if you're from a certain part of a city then you don't like the other part. Who the hell do we like?

It's like that in every part of the world, I blame football partially for the cause of alot of this inter-city hatred. In Italy north Italians hate south italians, most of it just banter as I'm sure it's the same with most people in England but extremists do arise in these situations.

Thats not the same at all. Some asians may take offence to being called Chinese as they aren't from China but calling a scotsman British is not the same as they are from Britain.

It was easier when we and the world just referred to the whole place as England. Honestly though, its invisible lines drawn on a map by some c*nts thousands of years ago who had no right to decide anything about modern day humans.

The facts are Scotland need england , separation would give a lot of problems , pretty sure they would have to borrow money . I think a lot of scots are resentful because of the power england has over them, but taking away our funding would they cope?

Wales and Scotland both have they're own flags, football and rugby teams plus national flower and patron saints. I'm proud to be british , I don't go around calling myself british but it stands as a very strong , traditional group of nations. UK, fair enough is a souless name and it means nothing really .

I like Scotland but I find some of the culture and heritage a bit overbearing. I think we could do with toning it down a bit.

There was a bit of an uproar about these comments by David Starkey:

Harsh as they may be, even as a "scot" I couldn't help but agree.

Proof for any of that? It's a contentious issue which is difficult to determine because of how intertwined everything is. In plain terms, Scotland accounts for approximately 13% of the UK's tax revenue, whilst making up just under 10% of the population. People go on about how we receive too much from the Barnett formula but on the basis of our disproportionate tax contribution I don't know if I believe that. Here's a site with a lot of facts and figures, it is dated, but still raises some interesting points.

I feel a lot more empowered as a Scotsman in the UK as I would if I were English. If it wasn't for Scotland, there would more or less be a permanent Conservative government. Labour has only ever got into power on the back of the Scottish vote. My MP gets to vote on things effecting all aspects of life in England, such as healthcare. The same cannot be said for vice versa.

Slightly off-topic, but I'm gonna be studying accounting and finance at Glasgow Uni. starting from September. How's the town? I've acquainted myself with the city via Google and whatnot for the past year, but are there any locals who might want to maybe show me around if they don't mind? biggrin.gif

What about a Northern Irishman, not only do some not want to be or labelled as british but they're not even from mainland Britain, if that's what you meant. If you meant that a scotsman woudn't get offended because he was from the United Kingdom of Great Britain then that's different isn't it because there may be some who don't like being labelled as British. But if you meant they're British because they're from mainland Britain then that's true.

You get what I'm trying to say or am I still phrasing it wrong?
