Algonquin Assassin
England=UK=Whales? Wait, there is a place called Whales in the UK? Is that where all the fat people in the UK live? Well get this I live in New South W(h)ales. It's where all the Brits sent their fat f***s during the Australian Colonisation. Speaking of which try throwing Britain in. That'll confuse most. Slingaa
The United Kingdom is England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They all have different flags for each country, but there is one flag for the UK. Some people have the English flag because they're proud to be English or don't like other countries in the UK. I, however, have the UK flag because the England flag looks crap imo and reminds me of the World Cup, which has been bad for us since 1966. Robinski
The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. At first glance we all operate as one country under the name "UK". The main parliament we have is in London, England, and is made up of two houses, one of which is made up of elected officials from all four countries. In addition, Scotland, Wales and N Ireland all have some devolved power granted to them by the main UK parliament, with Scotland having the most power to govern themselves. This works kind of like how US states can make their own laws, but to a much lesser degree. On the world stage, we act as one country, all united together hence "United Kingdom". You may also see us referred to as Great Britain, which isn't quite the same thing. GB is simply the big landmass that you guys see when you look at us, that big bit with England, Scotland and Wales on it. Even more confusingly, the term "British Isles" refers to the main island (Great Britain), all the surrounding islands and Ireland (the independent sovereign nation). The only ones that really matter though are distinguishing between English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish, and then remembering that all those countries together make up the UK. I suppose not... what I'm really confusing is...I know US is also made up of many different states, but they don't have their own flags..while UK do... Robinski
still not clear... thanks anyway....do they hate or even despise each other? if I go there, what should I call them? english? britsh? or just UK people? do people who live there understand all of these things naturlly? I suppose not... what I'm really confusing is...I know US is also made up of many different states, but they don't have their own flags..while UK do... It's easier if you think of each country like a state. They each have some control over the laws of their own country, but ultimately the House of Commons in London holds all the cards and is the one who grants the power to the countries to govern themselves, and deals with things that effect all of the countries together, like going to war for example. Not everyone understands the finnicky stuff like what exactly makes up the "British Isles" or what exactly Great Britain refers to, but everyone understands that the UK is made up of the four countries who are, to some extent, countries in their own right. The matter of what to call people is a bit of an odd one. Nobody will ever be properly offended if you call them by the wrong country-name. People in Scotland, Wales and N Ireland tend to be a little more sensitive about being, for example, Scottish first and British second. This is largely due to the English's attitudes towards conquering and controlling back in the day. But yeah, I doubt anyone will be truly offended, they might say they are though. By the way, US states do in fact have their own flags: Although, so the ignorance isn't one way, I can only ever recognise two US state flags, the Cali one (it has a bear!) and the Texas one, for no particular reason. _Rob_
Just because It needs to be said, the Union Flag that is on GTAF, is actually not correct As you can see here, the red diagonal parts are not in the middle of the diagonal white sections despite popular belief. Oh and before anyone asks, it's the Union Flag unless it's at sea, which is when it becomes the Union Jack

Its not that complicated but that maybe because i live there. personally all you need to know is that is 4 country's in one. This is my definition of each country. England: Football , Cricket and the queen. N. Ireland: Well you know this definition. Scotland: Kilts. Wales: Mining, Sheep , Rugby.

nlitement
What might add to the confusion is the fact that England & Wales is more of a unit than the other two countries. They have one legal system twogether, for example.
