Good grammar on the forums

I think it's more respectable to type in good grammer.

When people type in sh*tting grammer I usually don't care to read it or don't take it seriously.

Don't pause at a comma when it's typed, It doesn't mean you put a pause into your speech, it's not intended that way when I put one in,

You do realize that the English language isn't customizable? You can't just go round switching commas with full stops, you'll cause mayhem! Joking aside, your abuse of commas really does make it difficult to understand what you're saying sometimes. Which is a shame because sometimes you might actually have a valid point but it gets overlooked because no one can be bothered to decipher your hieroglyphics.

A comma is a pause. A full stop indicates the end of a sentence. End of. It's not hard work that'll kill you nor will it give you some sort of urinary infection. There's really nothing to be afraid of. The keys are right next to each other on the keyboard, for crying out loud! Surely no human is that lazy that they refuse to move their finger one centimetre to the right?

I break up a stream of thought with a comma, I just think about how it looks to me, it's a personal choice! haha

Well... on GTA Forums, I think it is important. If you don't, you will get made fun of by members thinking "high" of

themselves just because they're in a Official Gang, and the fact that they're better than everyone else. That's what I have seen, and it has happened to me. So when I post here, I always make sure I use proper grammar to an extent. On other Forums, I could care less, just here. So here's the lesson; just because you're in a pixelated gang doesn't mean you're better than everyone else.

I remember a while ago, some guy got in a bad mood just because I used "Your" instead of "You're". That got me angry, but it was in the Grumpy Old Forumers topic, so I guess I can count that out.

Still, in some ways, GTA Forums has many members with bad attitudes that think they are better than everyone else, and are huge grammar Nazis. Also while being here, I have met alot of nice members. I would say it's a 50/50 on what you can find here.

Anyways to answer the question, I would say yes, members that use proper grammar are less likely to be ripped apart by some of those nasty members.

grammar is important in writing for clarity of communication. for most people on the internet this is not the case. grammar instead becomes a tool through which one can assume supremacy... it is the weapon, primarily, of elitist psuedo-intellectuals.

not to mention that even the most progressive of people can become conservative when it comes to language, forgetting that language is inescapably a system in perpetual evolution.

Quite obviously, posts with proper grammar and punctuation are way nicer to read and understand. I try hard not to judge people by their grammar, but a fluent English speaker (speaker, writer) is always easier to approach and communicate with. I think it's up for every individual to decide how they want to carry their online presence, but I personally prefer debating with people with proper grammar.

If i were you i would try change that, that is what it did because i used to be a comma whore.

Look over your post after posting and remove excess commas where you think they the sentence could be read comfortably.

It just makes it easier to read.

Do many of you say 'off of?'

Sometimes, but only when I talk because I'm from the north of England and like to think it's because of that. I also drop certain words altogether - instead of saying "I'm going to the pub" I'll say what sounds like "I'm going pub". There's a silent "t" in there, so really if you're going to spell it (which you wouldn't unless you're writing a script for the next Wallace & Gromit production) it'd be "I'm going t'pub". I have a habit of turning our nouns into verbs too. Don't be surprised if I come out with "pubbing it".

I remember discussing the t' thing on these forums before, and getting disproportionately angry at that video of Michael McIntyre thinking he was doing it right but failing miserably.

Also, I do say "off of" in casual, spoken conversation, but that's 'cos I listen to a lot of Scott Mills and it's just rubbed off on me.

Does anyone have an open 'Word' Document to type in and then copy/paste it to the forums?

One of the guy's in my tutor group at uni is from Rotherham, which is proper Yorkshire land. He says the t' thing. "You coming t' class?" and so on. But I've never really seen or noticed that elitist thing on here which some people have eluded to. Think their's some sour grapes...

There are no excuses for bad grammar when it is used by literate, English speakers. Abbreviations like "pl0x" are not cool, type out the full word you lazy bum.

Forums should be more formal than instant messengers, Twitter etc.

When I first moved up to Newcastle (around there), all they did was mock me for saying stuff like, "I'm going to shop" etc. They do it the other way around, and say, "I'm going the shop"...

On subject of grammar, when I first joined these forums way back, I was the typical noob when it came to how I typed my posts out. Now, I can't stand seeing poorly, mis-constructed sentences/paragraphs etc. Yes, I admit that I've been picked up a few times for some mistakes I make, but I still try my best. As previously said, I'd rather read a post that someone has taken the effort with, rather than something that you're likely to text to someone when drunk.

Even on stuff like FB and that, I always use proper grammar and whatnot.

Only thing that makes me twitch a little every time I read it is when someone incorrectly mixes up "their" "there" or "they're", and "your" & "you're".

For example:

"They're shouldn't be any grammar nazi's on this board because their is no reason to be so fussy about it. Your just ignorant."

I don't understand why do people confuse these words. They are very different from each other, even when speaking them, since they have different meanings. This is for me, a person who doesn't speak in English as you guys do, and it is very hard for me to write a sentence without making a mistake, even the smallest one.

Many people(UNRATED69) don't like me because I type in a wrong way or so, but how can you blame me for that? It is very hard to write correctly in a language that isn't yours. I dare you to write anything in Portuguese without making a mistake, you probably wouldn't be able to do so.

Ex Hellraiser

My main problem is when people say "to" instead of "too." Something like "Tha's to bad" or "This is taking to long." And when people can't spell Niko right. Neko. Nikko. Neeko. Nico. There are subtitles! His name is seen a million times! God I hate that. There are a lot of things I just can't stand. And those who say heeeey look at dis shyyyyt ths is wht u gotta c sum1 evry1 y u etc...

y u no spk ful wrds

That makes me think less of people. If they have worse grammar and spelling than me, that equates in my mind that they are dumber, younger, and more ignorant. They are too lazy to type out what they say, and "dey don make no sense." I don't type like that just to save two seconds. If it is spelled out and properly proofread, I think more of the writer, and I am more likely to actually read it, because if they can type clearly, chances are, the subject is more clear, and more likely to be not bullsh*t. In school, I can't stand how many times someone says "What does this word mean?" when it is common sense. I hate people who don't know something, simply because I don't know what it is like to not know it. If I was in a class where I was the only one who didn't understand a word, I'd be embarrased, but I don't know how that is, so I hate those with less intelect.

I'm drifting off a little. whatsthat.gif

I personally don't like if a member tries to act 'gangsta' by writing things like ''plz'' instead of ''please'' or ''u'' instead of ''you''.

I don't see how that's gangsta.

Yeah i agree that's NOT Gangsta ! that's justin beiber sh*t. My sig is gangsta

Edit: I post how I post. If you don't like it don't read it. I'm poor at grammer and spelling. I have no problem admiting that. I'll try my best but that's all i can do. I heard about a spell check on here where's that located smile.gif

As long as the point gets across I have no qualm with it. If I have a hard time reading it because of horrible structure, forced misspellings, what have you, then I usually just ignore the post. I don't form any type of opinion of the actual poster.

Also, I post a lot from my phone and we all know how dodgy that can be.

If people can understand what you're addressing, then that's all that matters.

Pretty much this. The only reason I would use proper grammar beyond this on a forum is because of habit.

I agree, if I was to not use proper grammar then I would be taking longer to type.

I guess it all depends on weather they are doing it to look cool, if they were brought up like that or they have always spelt like that

@Cole Phelps; I believe it may be an add-on for Firefox. I have it on my PC at home, and has helped on so many occasions when I've been stoned on this forum.

I'm using Google Chrome, and I was replying to an earlier PM from Cole, he's taking gentle jokes about his posts to heart, but it's all friendly from my end, I pointed out, you get a red underline for errors you miss as you type, however, there, THEIR, THEY'RE always get messed up, as well as other usage in grammer....grammar

There's really no excuse for not using correct grammar. I accept that some people, particularly the younger among us, may not fully have a grasp of grammar so I don't let it bother me. It's worth getting to grips with the basics such as when to use paragraphs, full stops and commas. Correct use of paragraphs can make a huge difference to the impact and clarity of your post. Apostrophes are also important.

Wikipedia is a good place to find out how to use these things.
